THE ROLE - GET INVOLVED
We’re looking for a Volunteer Chief Operating Officer (COO), you’ll help design the systems, processes, and culture that will shape SUNSHINE for years to come. This is a hands‑on leadership role for someone who loves building systems, supporting people, and turning ideas into smooth, sustainable operations.

Ideal Candidate Profile
Skills and Experience
- Previous Chair or Vice-Chair experience, with strong understanding of charity governance and Charity Commission guidance.
- Strategic thinker with sound judgement and integrity.
- Proven ability to build relationships with external stakeholders and represent an organisation publicly.
- Experience with fundraising and major donor engagement; comfortable making the ask.
- Desirable: involvement in capital projects or property development.

THE ROLE — VOLUNTEER HEAD OF SUNSHINE LONELINESS AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS
We’re looking for a Volunteer Head of SUNSHINE Loneliness Awareness Campaigns to lead bold, creative, human‑centred campaigns that raise awareness of loneliness, challenge stigma, and inspire people to connect with their neighbours and communities, as well as promoting the SUNSHINE Charity as a leading light in the community.
This is a strategic and creative leadership role for someone who loves storytelling, social change, and building campaigns that feel hopeful, inclusive, and impossible to ignore.
You’ll help shape SUNSHINE’s public voice on loneliness — turning a silent struggle into a shared movement for connection.
As our Volunteer Head of SUNSHINE Loneliness Campaigns, you will:

World Book Day (WBD) is a small national charity with significant reach and profile, consistently punching above our weight. WBD champions reading for fun because it seriously improves lives. New World Book Day Trustees
WBD is governed by its board of trustees, 3 of which are appointed by the Publishers' Association and 3 by the Booksellers' Association, each in their capacity as a founding member. The remaining trustees are appointed by the board. New trustees are recruited to infill the gaps identified from regular skills audits. We are now seeking three new trustees, one of whom will be the new Chair of the trustee board, to fill an existing and two upcoming vacancies.
The three new trustees sought are expected to fulfil the following specifications:
· Chair of the Trustee Board: This post is advertised separately
· Publishers' Association Appointed Trustee: This trustee will be an individual from within the publishing industry. We are particularly looking for someone with senior level strategic HR experience, in particular remuneration and reward, performance management and employee health, safety and wellbeing.
· Education/literacy trustee: This person will have senior level strategic education and/or literacy experience, ideally derived from lived experience as an educator, academic or policy expert.
All trustees are expected to bring a commitment to our mission to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. Trustees will use their specific skills, knowledge or experience to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions, supporting effective governance in a national literacy charity and playing a vital role in its future success.

THE ROLE — VOLUNTEER COMPANY/CHARITY SECRETARY
We’re looking for a Volunteer Company/Charity Secretary to help build the governance foundations that will keep SUNSHINE safe, transparent, and thriving as we grow.
This role can be shaped around you. You can join us as a Trustee and Company Secretary, taking a place on the Board, or you can contribute as a non‑trustee Company Secretary, supporting the Board while not being a voting member.
Either pathway is welcome — what matters most is your commitment to good governance, community spirit, and helping a new start-up charity grow with confidence.
As our Volunteer Company Secretary, you will:

About the Role:

Gift of Friendship Programme Volunteer Befriender
Background
Age UK Croydon has received a generous donation from The Julia Rausing Trust as part of its wider partnership with Age UK, the national charity, to help fund its crucial friendship services that support older people in the local area.
This ‘Gift of Friendship’ from the Trust aims to help older people experiencing loneliness and isolation. Loneliness often stems from factors like bereavement, living alone and declining health. Loss of mobility or senses can leave many older people feeling disconnected, while financial worries can increase existing feelings of isolation. This can have serious consequences, undermining resilience and increasing risk of physical and mental illness.
Volunteers Befrienders are offering support and company to people who may need that extra confidence to attend a local activity in Croydon. You could accompany someone to a local lunch group or activity or even just going with them to a park for a nice walk. They build relationships in the process, which enable meaningful conversations and help to identify support needs and other services and activities that will help maintain their clients’ mental health. A key aim of the role is to support people with achieving their goals to live a happier life, accompany them, and build their confidence back to get out into the community and feel more independent.
Commitment
Minimum of 6 months from start of the GoF Befriending match, includes:
· 30-minute informal interview.
· Willing to undertake an enhanced DBS check.
· 1-hour core induction.
· Mandatory training sessions.
· Up to 1-2 hours a week engagement with your befriendee
· Weekly accurate records of interactions with your befriendee
· Regular check-in calls with Befriending Coordinator
Purpose of Role
Staff will assess the client and you will be given their profile and a support plan. Core tasks will include:
· Weekly companionship contact in person.
· Encouraging and accompanying to visits to other social events and activities in the local area e.g., a walk, GP, an IT class.
· Spotting additional needs and identifying services and activities to address these.
· Submitting a weekly report on the contact to include contact type, signposting and any concerns.
Support Provided
- Full remote training and induction provided.
- We will complete the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) application with you.
- Supervision and direct contact with the Befriending
Co-ordinator/Manager.
· Join and participate in peer support groups and meet other volunteers to share experiences and good practice.
