Volunteering in the shop
Our Ballycastle Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

The Unseen Barriers Foundation is looking for new Board Trustee's.

We are a new, disabled-led Scottish charity tackling the invisible causes of exclusion. Shame, sensory overload, emotional exhaustion, disbelief. These are the things that stop people from showing up — to appointments, to events, to life.

The Foundation is built around two original lived experience contributions by our founder:

The Unseen Barriers Framework — a landmark conceptual model naming the distress-based barriers that keep disabled people locked out of support

Cùran — a green plush dragon created as a visual anchor for distress, shutdown, and solidarity

Both are licensed to the Foundation by the creator to ensure they serve a purpose-first, rights-based mission.

We are now looking for trustees to help shape this work from the ground up. This is a working board — not a figurehead role. Trustees will actively contribute to strategic direction, governance, and growth.

We are currently remote-first to ensure full accessibility, but will provide office space (Edinburgh/Glasgow area) once funded. You do not need to be based in either city.

Estimated time commitment:

Around 6–8 hours per month including preparation, meetings, and task-based input

Board meetings held every 6–8 weeks via Zoom

All access needs will be fully accommodated

We are especially keen to hear from:

Disabled people and unpaid carers

People with lived experience of distress, neurodivergence, or poverty

Individuals with skills in finance, charity governance, fundraising, legal oversight, or communications

Make a difference to the lives of rescue cats! We have a number of roles within our cat rescue based in York. 

Home visitors

Join our fantastic volunteer team to help us improve the welfare & quality of life for the cats & kittens in our care.

Our home visit volunteers help us to assess each home environment and a families circumstances to ensure our cats are suitably matched to their new family. This is a vital step in our rehoming process to ensure our cats get the happy ending they deserve.

You can dedicate as much or as little of your free time to this role- picking up outstanding home visits as and when you can.

This role can also be done remotely (from home) if necessary or preferred.

We rely on our fantastic team of dedicated volunteers to continue our work and would love for you to join us.

Fundraising

We are looking for cat loving people with a little free time and lots of ideas to join our fundraising team!
 

This role includes all aspects of fundraising including organising and taking charge of ideas/ events with the support of the wider team and helping out at events. 

We need your help to raise much needed funds to support the work that we do and help give cats and kittens in need a better future. 

Fostering

Join our fantastic volunteer team to help us improve the welfare and quality of life of cats & kittens in our care.

• Do you love cats but unable to commit to one of your own?

• Do you live approx 40 min radius of York?

• If you have pets, do you have a spare room to foster cats/ kittens in need?

• Do you have access to a vehicle?
   

We are looking for people to join our wonderful supportive team of foster carers! 

Caring for cats/ kittens in your home while they undergo rehabilitation and wait to be adopted doesn't cost you a penny. We provide full training & support along the way.

Transport Volunteers

We are always looking for transport volunteers to join our team. This role involves transporting animals, equipment and donations too and from various locations in and around the York area. We may also occasionally need help transporting cats and equipment from further afield. 

Description

Our Shop Volunteers raise money for the people we support with a Learning Disability. Do you have a few hours a week to spare and share your time with us?

Our retail roles are varied and fun. You could be sorting donations from the public, dressing our window or serving customers on the till. There are many people from different walks of life and it's a great way to get practical experience and to meet new people.

This role will take place on a weekly basis for a few hours We will try our best to be flexible around the best time for you, but also need to consider the store opening times and volunteer rota. It could be a weekday or weekend, morning or afternoon, our stores are usually open 7 days a week. We’d appreciate any time that you can spare.

Whilst in the store, you will help with activities based on the needs of the Store Manager.

Tasks you could get up to whilst volunteering could include:

• Serving customers on the till
• Taking stock donations from the public
• Tagging and steaming stock for the shop floor
• Dressing the window displays
• Asking people to join us as a volunteer

As a Retail Volunteer you will be:

• Friendly and Approachable
• Reliable, Kind and Patient
• A good communicator (including listener)
• Willing to volunteer within guidelines and to take direction where necessary
• Accepting of others who might be different to yourself

As a Mencap volunteer you will:

• Make new friends and raise important funds for people with a learning disability

A bit about this role

As a charity we can continue to help cats and kittens in need thanks to the donations we receive at fundraising events from generous members of the public. Our fundraising event helpers have the exciting and varied role of helping at local fundraising events - such as cakes sales, barn dances, quiz nights – and everything in between!
 

You can expect us to

What we need from you

Time expectation

This role is really flexible! You could choose to volunteer at one event for a couple of hours or attend multiple fundraising events.

We’ll keep you up to date with upcoming local events where volunteers are needed. You’ll then be able to choose which events you’d like to volunteer at and how many hours you’d like to give. However much time you can give, your contribution will help raise much needed funds to continue the work of Cats Protection.

Skills and experiences we seek
We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need any retail or shop experience as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and to follow our policies as well as be an excellent representative for Save the Children.

We know that our shop teams are stronger when they are inclusive and representative of their communities. Everybody can make a real difference. People come to us for all sorts of reasons, from all backgrounds, and we will do what we can to find a role that works for you.

What happens next?
After you’ve filled in an application, we will invite you for an informal trial shift. It’s a great opportunity to visit the shop, meet some of our existing volunteers and have a go at some of the tasks that you would be supporting with as a shop volunteer. Hopefully allowing you to get a feel for the role and make sure it’s for you. We also ask for a couple of references (these don’t have to be formal workplace ones, just someone who has known you for over 6 months and isn’t related).

Volunteering in the shop
Our Belmont Road Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.
