At SARSAS we provide support for people affected by rape or any kind of sexual assault or abuse at any time in their lives. Listening, believing and supporting them through provided vital support to people of all genders through our Helpline, counselling, group work and specialist support services.
We believe that a world without sexual violence is possible. We campaign for people affected by sexual violence because everyone deserves to live free from abuse and its impact. We are unflinching in our commitment to calling for change, in raising awareness, and in our drive for all voices to be heard. We challenge misconceptions about sexual violence and abuse through training and campaigning. We lobby both locally and nationally to promote the needs of survivors.
We need your support!
We are looking for people who can offer energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to join our volunteer Board of Trustees at SARSAS. You will be joining a proactive, engaged and supportive Board and will play a pivotal role in shaping SARSAS and supporting our work.
Whilst ideally you will have prior experience of how a Trustee role works, this isn’t mandatory: If you are committed, passionate, and determined, we would love to hear from you. We will provide training and support to help you become an amazing trustee. We would be particularly interested to hear from you have a background in communication, data, IT or risk.
It matters to us that our Trustees reflect the incredibly diverse communities we serve, and we are actively seeking younger people, people from Black, Asian and minoritised communities and people with a disability for these voluntary roles. We value lived experience of sexual violence within our staff, volunteers and trustees.

Time commitment
We appreciate for many of our Trustees, they fit volunteering around busy work and home schedules. Overall, the time commitment is expected to be c 30 hours per year, including preparation for meetings.
All trustees are expected to attend 4 x 2.5 hours Board meetings a year (evenings) and 1 full away day each year.
We have two subcommittees that also meet an additional 4 times a year (1.5 hour in the evening), which trustees may be part of.
Being a Trustee at SARSAS is more than just turning up to a few Board meetings, as it is your skills, passion & experience that brings value to the organisation, therefore, we also ask that Trustees engage with SARSAS staff, and attend events or meetings as required, as well as responding to emails. We estimate that this covers a further 7 hours a year.

Hopian is a registered charity that provides advice and support for adults and children who have experienced Domestic Violence and Abuse through the provision of refuge accommodation and community support services. Sift has been supporting people affected by self-harm, trauma, and distress for almost 40 years. Our wonderful team of Listening Service Volunteers provide valuable, non-judgemental support that makes an important impact on the lives of those who contact us.
We’re currently recruiting Bristol-based volunteers for our helpline and text service, to attend shifts at our office and to become part of our friendly, like-minded community.
Our next training block will take place at our Bristol office over four days: 11th & 12th June and 18th & 19th June between 10am and 4pm each day. Please note that attendance on all four dates is required to complete the training.

What's it like being a volunteer?
When you join our team, you’ll take part in our four-day in-person training course. The training is an opportunity to meet new people and learn the valuable skills you’ll take with you into the work.
Working on the service, you’ll answer calls, texts and/or emails from people impacted by self-harm and offer them confidential, emotional support to understand their own experiences and make decisions that are right for them.
Every quarter, you’ll meet a group of your peers to discuss volunteering and have a safe and confidential space to reflect on the work.
Who can volunteer?
We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds and life experiences. You may have your own experiences of self-harm or mental health challenges or be keen to learn more about how to support others through these experiences.
You don’t need previous listening or counselling experience, just an open mind, a commitment to the role, and a willingness to learn.
We're looking for anyone who wants to offer meaningful support, and can listen with empathy and an understanding that everyone’s situation is unique. We're keen to recruit volunteers who are flexible, adaptable, and open to new learning experiences.
What happens now?

Cambridge Nightline is a confidential and anonymous listening service run by students, for students. We have been providing peer-to-peer support to students at the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University for over 50 years. STAMMA is the leading charity for people who stammer in the UK. We’re a small, award-winning organisation with big ambitions and a brilliant community, keen to create space and respect for people who stammer.
Stammering has historically been the target for humour and used to suggest inadequacy, leaving many who stammer facing daily ignorance, discrimination and disrespect. This can affect job prospects and mental health, and cause depression and social isolation. It can make booking a GP appointment a nightmare, and prevent people from accessing a service altogether, leaving them feeling humiliated, degraded or disbelieved. We’re here to change that.
We’ve a clear strategy for the next five years to achieve real and practical change for people who stammer by highlighting the inadvertent barriers they face within the workplace and as service users. We want to reach more people who stammer and grow our supporter base, but to do that we need to expand our training and advocacy services, whilst underpinning our helpline and family support.
We want to appoint a new Trustee with significant skills and experience within the charity sector to the Board. You’ll need to share our excitement and ambition for change. It isn’t essential that you stammer. This is an unpaid position, but travel expenses can be covered. Trustee terms are for four years, and you will be expected to attend all Board meetings, up to five times a year, usually on a Saturday, either in-person at different locations across England, or online. There are also sub-committees and informal planning and preparatory discussions, usually held online.
