The Vacancy

Are you a member of the Methodist Church in Britain who is passionate about helping the Church grow in its mission and witness? We are looking for people who can bring their experience, insight and gifts to the Mission Committee, contributing to strategic priorities that support God's mission in Britain and around the world.

We are seeking five new members of the Mission Committee from 1 September 2027. Appointments are for a three-year term and may be renewed once, to a maximum of six years.

This is a voluntary, unpaid position; reasonable expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with MCGB’s Travel and Expenses Policy.

About the role

The Mission Committee helps the Methodist Church develop and maintain a strategic vision for mission. Reporting through the Connexional Council, the Committee plays a key role in shaping how the Church supports and delivers mission in Britain and around the world.

The Committee's work includes developing and supporting mission initiatives, equipping and encouraging those engaged in mission, overseeing connexional mission policy, and monitoring the distribution of grants and funding that support mission across Britain. It also considers how the Church can enhance and support God's mission in the world through areas such as evangelism and growth, justice, and work with children, young people and families.

About You

We are looking for experienced, committed individuals with transferable skills.

Successful applicants will:

  • Have previous experience of serving on a church body.
  • Have an awareness of the variety of contexts that exist within the Methodist Church in Great Britain.
  • Have the ability to contribute to discussions about how the vision and policies for mission adopted by the Conference might be implemented in Circuits and Districts.
  • Be a member in good standing of the Methodist Church in Britain

We would particularly welcome applications from those with experience of evangelism, pioneering ministry, New Places for New People, growing churches, or strategic mission leadership.

Expressions of interest are invited from lay and ordained members of the Methodist Church in Britain, and especially from people from ethnic backgrounds, who are currently under- represented on the Committee. All applications will be assessed on merit.

Time Commitment

  • Attendance at two in-person meetings each year, one of which is a 24-hour residential.
  • Participation in online committee meetings (currently two per year).

We advise you to review the role description and person specification ahead of completing and submitting your online expression of interest form.

Please note that where appropriate, the successful nominee will be asked to undertake further checks, including reference checks.
