About Cygnus Support

Cygnus Support is a local charity dedicated to improving the mental health and emotional wellbeing of people across Northumberland. We empower people to improve their lives by providing counselling, education and support in their local community.

At a time when demand for mental health and wellbeing support remains high, our work is more important than ever. We are seeking new trustees who can help us strengthen our charity, guide our future direction and ensure we continue to deliver the strongest possible support for the people who need us most.

You will be joining a well-respected mental health and wellbeing charity made up of a small team of friendly staff, volunteers and board of trustees who are all passionate and committed to making a difference to peoples’ lives.

The Opportunity

We are looking for people to join our Board of Trustees and support the leadership of Cygnus Support as we shape the next stage of our charity’s development. As a trustee, you will work with fellow board members and the senior team to provide strategic direction, good governance and constructive challenge.

This is a rewarding voluntary role for someone who wants to make a meaningful contribution to their local community and play a part in improving access to mental health and wellbeing support.

What Trustees Do

· Help set and review the strategic direction of the organisation.

· Ensure the charity is well governed, financially responsible and compliant with its legal and charitable responsibilities.

· Use your skills, insight and experience to contribute to board discussions and decision-making.

· Support the senior team to identify opportunities, manage risks and strengthen services.

· Champion the needs of the people and communities we support.

· Act as an ambassador for Cygnus Support and its values.

Who We Are Looking For

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences. You do not need previous trustee experience to apply; what matters most is your commitment to our mission, your willingness to work collaboratively and your ability to think strategically and help us grow.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people who can bring expertise or experience in one or more of the following areas:

· Fundraising and income generation

· Charity governance & secretarial support

· Commissioning

· Marketing

· Online service delivery

· Volunteer engagement and support

· Health and wellbeing services, including lived experience, service delivery or service-user insight

Time Commitment

Trustees are expected to attend Board meetings every eight weeks. Meetings are currently held online, although there may be a need to meet in person in and meetings usually last approximately two hours. Trustees may also be asked to contribute to occasional discussions, emails or focused pieces of work between meetings.

What we need from you

You’ll be:

• Being part of a team that identifies suitable homes for cats in care
• Providing potential adopters with basic cat care information
• Completing homing questionnaires with potential adopters ‘virtually’, as well as face to face, which may involve visiting the homes of potential adopters
• Carrying out follow up communications if required
• Using online map searches to match cats and kittens to new homes

Time expectation

Our cat match volunteers usually spend 2 to 3 hours a week in this role which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.

Volunteer: Reading Volunteer

Do you love getting lost in a good book? Are you patient, kind, and passionate about helping others enjoy stories and conversation? Join us as a Reading Volunteer at SeeAbility and help make reading fun, inclusive, and meaningful for people with learning disabilities, autism, and sight loss.

What You Will Be Doing

As a Reading Volunteer, you will spend time reading with and supporting people we support to enjoy books, stories, magazines, poetry, and conversation. This could include:

• Reading aloud in a relaxed and friendly way
• Supporting people to choose books and topics they enjoy
• Encouraging communication, confidence, and imagination
• Sharing laughter, conversation, and meaningful one-to-one time
• Helping create a calm and enjoyable reading experience

Whether it’s a favourite childhood story, an audiobook, or discovering something new together, your time will help bring books to life.

About the Role

As a Maintenance Volunteer, you will help maintain and improve the homes and environments of people with autism, sight loss, and learning disabilities. Your support will help create safe, comfortable, and welcoming spaces where people can thrive.

This role involves practical tasks such as painting, decorating, gardening, and general DIY. Please note that electrical, plumbing, and gas work are not included in this volunteer role.

Registered as The Royal School for the Blind, SeeAbility is one of the oldest disability charities in the UK. In 2024 we  celebrated our 225th anniversary, having pioneered specialist support across multiple generations since 1799!

We specialise in supporting people who have learning disabilities, autism, complex needs, who may also have sight loss. Our shops help raise lots of money for us. It’s always lovely chatting to our customers about the fabulous items we sell and telling them about the fantastic work that we do. As a volunteer you will get the chance to meet new people and make friends, plus be part of an amazing team of volunteers. There’s so much for you to get stuck into when volunteering in our shops. We get lots of donations so you will be rolling up your sleeves in the back room where you will be receiving, sorting, steaming and pricing donations, it's always exciting when one of our volunteers spots a real gem. On the shop floor, as well as welcoming and serving our customers with a smile, you will be using the till (don't worry, we will show you how) and handling money. When people come in to donate items you will also be completing the Gift Aid forms that let their donations help us even more. It’s really important that our window and shop displays look appealing so people keep visiting our shops, so you'll be wielding a duster and vacuum as well as your imagination to make the shop look its best. It would be ideal if you could volunteer one shift a week, which is about four hours but we're also happy to have more flexible times. No special skills are needed as we will show you what to do and will provide all the training you need. But if you have any experience or particular interest tell us, it may come in useful. By volunteering with us in one of our busy Donation Processing Hubs you will be raising essential funds for Oxfam – all whilst learning new skills and meeting some incredible people.

• Undertaking shop related tasks agreed with the Manager, for example:
• Selecting, sorting, and pricing donated stock.
• Researching valuable and vintage stock.
• This role may include occasionally lifting boxes. We prioritise a safe working environment and provide comprehensive health and safety training to all volunteers.

The impact you will make:

By supporting local and national fundraising activity, you will help ensure that NCI stations can continue to operate effectively. Your contribution will directly support the volunteers on watch who provide a crucial extra set of eyes along the coast, helping to prevent incidents and assist emergency services when needed.

What you will be doing:

As a volunteer station supporter fundraiser, you will be involved in your stations fundraising activities, including:

• Attending local fundraising events and community activities organised by your station
• Manning stalls at events, shows, and public spaces
• Collecting, checking, and emptying donation boxes in agreed locations
• Assisting with simple fundraising initiatives organised by your local station
• Helping to promote NCI within the local community and encouraging public support

This role is ideal for someone looking to gain experience, confidence, and skills while supporting a coastal water safety charity. Would be beneficial to be located near to an NCI station, or reasonable travelling disctance from a station. Would need to hold a driving licence for travelling to and from events.

Meet and Greet Volunteer (Tea & Coffee Service)

About the Role

We are looking for a friendly, welcoming, and compassionate volunteer to support people accessing our mental health service. As a Meet and Greet Volunteer, you will be one of the first points of contact for visitors, helping to create a warm, safe, and supportive environment.

The role also includes serving tea, coffee, and refreshments to service users, carers, visitors, and staff, helping to promote a sense of community and wellbeing within the service.

Key Responsibilities

• Welcome service users, visitors, carers, and staff in a friendly and professional manner.
• Help people feel comfortable and supported when they arrive at the service.
• Offer directions and information about facilities within the building.
• Prepare and serve tea, coffee, and light refreshments.
• Maintain a clean, tidy, and welcoming refreshment area.

We are seeking an experienced finance professional to join our Board of Trustees and provide strategic financial oversight to support the Trust’s long-term success and sustainability.

As a Trustee, you will play a key role in shaping the Trust’s vision, ensuring strong governance, and helping to deliver positive outcomes for our pupils, staff, and communities. Working collaboratively with fellow Trustees and senior leaders, you will contribute to effective decision-making and provide independent scrutiny and challenge where appropriate.

Key Responsibilities

• Strategic Leadership – setting the Trust’s vision, values, culture, and long-term strategy.
• Accountability and Assurance – overseeing performance, risk management, and organisational effectiveness.

As the Finance Specialist Trustee, you will bring professional financial expertise to the Board, supporting robust financial governance, sustainability, and effective stewardship of resources.

What We Are Looking For

We welcome applications from individuals with strong financial knowledge and experience, who can provide strategic insight and independent judgement. Previous board experience is desirable but not essential.

Trustees are responsible for the governance of a charitable company and must ensure that the Trust complies with all relevant legal, regulatory, and statutory requirements. Trustees work closely with the Trust’s governance professionals and, where necessary, seek advice from external professional advisers.

This is an excellent opportunity to use your financial expertise to make a meaningful contribution to education and community outcomes.

We are looking for someone who:

• Professional experience in finance, accounting, audit, or financial management
• Ability to analyse complex financial information and communicate key issues clearly to non-finance specialists
• Understanding of governance, risk management, and assurance frameworks
• Commitment to the values, vision, and objectives of the Trust

Desirable criteria:

• Experience working within the public sector, charity, or education finance environment
• Knowledge of academy trust funding arrangements and financial frameworks
• A recognised professional finance qualification (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA) or equivalent experience
