Youth Helpers work directly with young people in St John Ambulance Badger Setts and Cadet Units. By supporting our Youth Leaders to deliver a session across our range of programmes. In this role, you'll support the learning and development of young people into the next generation of health citizens. Youth Helpers also help young people develop their confidence, teamwork skills, self-discipline, and generally encourage them to strive to be the best they can be, as well as supervise and support other adult volunteers in their team. 

You’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time.

At St John Ambulance we are looking to embed ourselves within our communities, delivering support which is tailored to the needs of those communities whilst providing a positive experience for our Volunteers.

We need leaders who are passionate about making a difference in their communities, who care about helping and developing others, who will lead and inspire a volunteer movement across a geographical area to deliver Community First Aid, Community Education and Community Fundraising as well as develop our offering for young people. Through leading a team of Volunteer leaders, you will drive excellence in delivery, develop an inclusive and diverse volunteering experience for new and current volunteers, and help navigate through change to build a bigger and better St John Ambulance.

As the Network Community Lead you will oversee the delivery of our Community First Aid programmes and local Fundraising and Engagement activity within your Community Network in line with the established needs of your community. Your role will be pivotal in increasing the impact of our community programmes by ensuring they are effectively implemented and widely accessible, increasing charitable income to support the networks be sustainable whilst also growing, engaging the local community in the work of St John Ambulance. Through your leadership, people in the communities will gain essential first aid skills, empowering them to respond confidently in emergencies and ultimately save lives whilst also actively supporting local fundraising to maintain our presence and impact. You will support the growth of a motivated and skilled base of volunteers who will be involved in a wide range of activities.

We will make sure you will have access to a proper induction to volunteering with SJA and the training you need for the role you take on. We will also provide you with a supportive environment while you are volunteering with us. Information about our volunteer roles are included in the role descriptions. Volunteers would be expected to attend training for the role both online and in person, to attend regularly network weekly meetings to enable them to keep their skills up to date.

A full driving license is required, local travel across Cornwall on a regular basis to attend community events and training

The Professional Development Programme with Quilombo UK runs over a period of 16 weeks, is UNPAID and requires a minimum of 12 hours commitment per week across Monday, Wednesday and/or Friday.

When do I need to be available?

We are a well‑established and successful local charity supporting vulnerable people, and we’ve just celebrated our 30th anniversary. As we continue to grow, we’re looking for a Volunteer Administrator to support our work at this exciting moment in our development.

You will be joining an incredibly supportive team of staff, volunteers and trustees, many of whom have been here for more than 10 years, working towards our shared mission to enhance the quality of life for our beneficiaries.

Your role

Brigstowe is seeking a Volunteer Administrator to support our reception and office administration for one full day or two half-days per week, preferably on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays.

The role will include: 

• Front-of-house reception duties, which involves welcoming our clients and showing them to meetings with staff (we work with vulnerable people who are sometimes destitute or in crisis, but you will be supported with this)
• Answering phone calls and transferring calls to colleagues, and sometimes taking difficult calls or new client referrals
• Making phone calls to clients to gather their feedback on our services
• General office administration, including data entry and record‑keeping
• Admin for our peer support group – calling members of the group, recording attendance and client feedback, and helping to organise events throughout the year

You will be supervised and supported by Brigstowe’s full-time Executive Assistant. Full induction will be provided, along with ongoing training opportunities. In return, we require a minimum commitment of six months.

About us

For 30 years, Brigstowe has been a lifeline for people living with HIV, especially those facing barriers: refugees, asylum seekers, LGBTQ+ communities, as well as people with no safe place to disclose. We’ve mentored hundreds, advised thousands, and supported hundreds more who have struggled with life, and we’ve trained hundreds of public-facing professionals.

We support anyone living with or affected by HIV in Bristol and the surrounding areas through a comprehensive and holistic range of services, including advice and support, peer support groups and peer mentoring. We also provide sexual health promotion and outreach services.

We pride ourselves on treating our clients with respect and dignity, with the highest regard for confidentiality. We work hard to ensure that our award-winning services are accessible, person-centred, non-judgmental, professional and of a high quality.

About you

You are an enthusiastic team player who enjoys keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes so that the support staff can focus on their clients. You enjoy supporting people from all backgrounds, and you will be using your skills to directly support vulnerable people in the community.

The role would suit someone with some administrative experience who is comfortable with IT and Microsoft Office programmes (mainly Excel and Word). You will be working in the office alongside our committed and supportive staff team, gaining experience in a rewarding charity setting.

Hours: One full day or two half-days per week (preferably working on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays)

Commitment: We ask for a minimum commitment of six months

Why this role matters

Our Board of Trustees plays a vital role in ensuring the Museum fulfils its charitable purpose, uses resources wisely, and remains sustainable for future generations. Trustees provide strategic oversight, ensure good governance, and support the long-term vision of the organisation.

We are at the start of an exciting five-year transformation programme to strengthen our impact, grow visitor engagement, and deliver a major capital redevelopment project: “Unlocking Stories at the Roald Dahl Museum”. Trustees will play a pivotal role in guiding the Museum through this important period of change, growth, and opportunity.

Who we are looking for

We are seeking people who want to make a meaningful, strategic contribution and help shape the future direction of the Museum. Trustees work collaboratively to guide strategy, support ambitious plans, and ensure the organisation thrives creatively, financially, and operationally.

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Human Resources – to shape our people strategy, leadership development, and organisational culture.
• Finance – to shape our financial strategy through a major capital project and to ensure the museum thrives long-term (ideally this trustee will be a qualified accountant).
• Fundraising – to grow income and support the delivery of our redevelopment and future sustainability.
• Partnerships – to encourage the development of strategic partnerships nationally and internationally.

You do not need previous trustee experience, nor do you need to have worked in a museum or cultural organisation. We welcome first-time trustees and are looking for people with good judgement, strategic thinking skills, and a collaborative approach. All reasonable expenses are covered.

Time commitment and terms

• Trustees typically contribute around one working day per month, including Board meetings and participation in at least one committee (Finance, Governance, Fundraising, or Capital Project Committee).
• Trustees are appointed for an initial three-year term, with the possibility of reappointment for a second term.
• This is a voluntary, unpaid role, but all reasonable travel and out-of-pocket expenses are reimbursed, including childcare.

Trustees receive a full induction, mentoring, and clear briefing materials, allowing them to focus on strategic oversight rather than operational detail. The Museum encourages and covers the cost of relevant training to support Trustees in their role
