Or perhaps you’re starting out on your employment journey but need experience to help you land a future job? Becoming a Volunteer Retail Assistant is the perfect opportunity for you!

As one of our valued Volunteer Retail Assistants in our York Goodramgate shop, you will be at the heart of our retail experience, welcoming members of the public and serving at the till. It will be a varied role with no two shifts being the same. From helping someone find a perfect gift or finishing touch to an outfit, to putting through cash and card sales at the till, we’d love you to come and join our busy, friendly shop.

Volunteer Retail Assistants will be located primarily on the shop floor, dealing with queries, pricing items, using the till, and ensuring our shops are the best on the high street. Without you, we couldn't provide needed support to the York Animal Home, so we want to ensure you feel welcomed and supported. You will receive full training in all retail areas, with continued development available in your volunteer journey. If you’re looking to gain confidence to get back into work, or simply want to find somewhere to make connections, we have a role for you.

Every single penny raised in our charity shop goes directly to the York Animal Home and gives vital funds to ensure they can continue helping animals in need. Without your help our shops could not run; volunteers are what make us special and we would love to have you join our team.

Your duties:

These may involve (on any given day):

• Giving a warm and friendly welcome as people enter our shop
• Helping with queries about items
• Putting cash and card sales through our till
• Engaging visitors about our charity and promoting the York Animal Home and our links to it
• Processing Gift Aid donations
• Restocking our shelves and making them look eye-catching

Volunteer and join our Board of Trustees and help strengthen support, awareness and long-term sustainability for people affected by Chronic Granulomatous Disorder (CGD) and their families. Please note this oppurunity to volunteer as a trustee is open to UK residents only. 

A range of backgrounds

It is great if you have skills or experience which you think would beuseful to support our board, but this is by no means a requirement.We’re looking for people who are enthusiastic about us doing good work for the community and committed to helping us see this mission through.

We provide a full induction and training to everyone who joins as a trustee, and we also encourage interested parties to attend a boardmeeting before joining so you can see how we work.

Commitment from you

Being a trustee is an official duty as they have joint legal control of the charity and are ultimately responsibly for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do. The CGD Society is also a registered company in England & Wales, so our trustees are also directors for the purposes of company law.We expect the following of all of our trustees, committing around one hour of time per week:

1.To attend our board meetings, which occur via video conference every two months. 2.To keep in touch via email, through an official email address that we will provide for you, at a minimum of once per week.

Our board meetings occur 6 times a year, usually on a weekday evening, and we provide an agenda with reading material two weeks in advance. We ask all participants to read this material and come prepared with comments and questions. Every input is welcomed, debates are encouraged, and all views matter.

We try to host one meeting per year - our Annual General Meetingor AGM - in-person at a central location, to provide an opportunity for our team to meet face-to-face. We cover all travel expenses for trustees to attend these in-person if they are able to.

We also encourage our trustees to engage with one of our subcommittees, which are smaller groups overseeing specific areas of our work, such as our nursing service or financial governance.This is optional, as we recognise that not all of our trustees can spare the time to participate.

The English class is a part of the Creative Arts and Skills Programme (CASP) and runs on Mondays, 12-2pm, during term time. It is a safe space for clients to improve their English at their own pace, making friends and immersing themselves in learning to forget some of their daily challenges, whilst being continuously supported by our team of dedicated staff and volunteers throughout their journey.

This weekly English class is a relaxed and friendly space for clients of all language and literacy abilities to practice their English together and develop the confidence to later enrol in a formal college ESOL course. While this class is mostly for beginners, it is also attended by clients who are less comfortable in busy environments and would prefer to learn or improve their English in a smaller group. Some clients are already in college and use this space for extra practice.

We are looking for a volunteer to assist the main teacher in the class, predominantly as a friendly and supportive presence and to provide extra support and encouragement for clients who may need it.

Main tasks and activities

• Supporting the set up and smooth running of the class;
• Assisting clients one on one who might need a little bit of extra support;
• Provide a friendly and supportive presence;
• Other assitance as required by the main teacher.

Skills and experience needed

• Understanding of, and commitment to, the objectives of the Helen Bamber Foundation;
• A demonstrable empathy for our vulnerable clients, including asylum seekers, refugees and survivors of torture and trafficking;
• An understanding of the challenges facing our client group;

Do you want to invest your time supporting women who are marginalised in Tower Hamlets? Do you feel called to social justice and want to do something about it? For over 20 years we have been supporting women involved in selling sex. Many of the women credit our Door of Hope project with being key to their sense of wellbeing whilst on the streets and for some, their exit from selling sex.

We are recruiting new volunteers to continue delivering consistent outreach, early morning, and late evening, spanning different days of the week.

• We need volunteers to work with the women we support. We are looking for women with:
• A vision for reaching out to women involved in/affected by selling sex/sexual exploitation.

Volunteering in the shop

Our Sidmouth Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

Ready to step up? This is for people who want more responsibility at the Community Food Hub.

As a Food Co-op Lead Volunteer, you'll be a go-to person on the floor — helping coordinate sessions, supporting other volunteers, and keeping the co-op running smoothly and with pride.

You'll work closely with the Food Hub Manager (Petagaye) and Thomas (Head of Food & Partnerships) — taking ownership of your sessions and helping to build a strong, reliable volunteer team around you.

This role is a real stepping stone — building the skills and track record that open doors to more senior roles in community food work, charity operations, or beyond.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

• Take the lead during sessions — directing volunteers, managing the floor, keeping things moving

• Support the Food Hub Manager in coordinating session activity and volunteer tasks

• Help with stock management — tracking what is available, what is needed, and communicating this clearly

• Keep simple session records — numbers served, feedback, any issues to flag

• Be the first point of contact for volunteers during sessions

• Ensure all food hygiene, safeguarding, and health and safety standards are maintained

• Support the induction and settling-in of newer volunteers

• Communicate updates and any concerns clearly to the Food Hub Manager after each session

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

ESSENTIAL

• Some experience of volunteering or working in a team setting

• A natural ability to take initiative and keep things organised

• Confident communicator — able to give clear, calm direction to others

• Reliable, consistent, and able to commit to regular sessions

• Understanding of safeguarding and food hygiene principles

HELPFUL BUT NOT ESSENTIAL

• Previous experience at a food bank, food co-op, or community kitchen

• A food hygiene certificate (Level 1 or 2)

Our Gardener Volunteers support our homes by helping to maintain their outdoor spaces through weeding, pruning and planting, so that the people we support can enjoy spending time in a beautiful environment. 

We are currently looking for volunteer gardeners for one of our services, who can support with the following tasks:

• Create planters

• Provide general maintenance of our gardens

• Watering, planting, weeding and pruning

• Maintaining flower beds

• Creating/improving/maintaining our sensory garden spaces

ABOUT THIS ROLE

As we grow, we need an experienced Operations Manager to help us run well behind the scenes — so everything on the frontline can keep delivering. This is a meaningful voluntary leadership role for someone with professional experience in operations, HR, or management who wants their skills to count for something real.

You will work closely with the CEO and senior team to ensure the organisation runs efficiently, compliantly, and in line with our values.

• Identify opportunities to streamline processes, maximise resources, and improve impact

HR Oversight

• Oversee HR policies, compliance, and staff wellbeing in line with UK employment law and safeguarding requirements

• Support recruitment and onboarding — fair, inclusive, and safeguarding-compliant

• Provide HR guidance to managers and staff; escalate to external expertise when needed

• Maintain oversight of volunteer engagement and HR record keeping

Finance Oversight

• Supervise the Finance Coordinator (10 hrs/week) and provide accountability for financial administration

• Monitor budgets, financial reports, and expenditure in line with charity governance standards

• Ensure accurate, timely reporting to the CEO and Trustees

• Liaise with accountants, auditors, and external advisors as required

Leadership & Governance

• Work alongside the CEO, Trustees, and senior team to align operations with organisational strategy

• Provide assurance of compliance with safeguarding, data protection, charity law, and employment legislation

• Model organisational values of safeguarding, equity, inclusion, and community impact

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

• Experience in operations, management, or a related professional field

• Working knowledge of HR processes and UK employment law

• Financially literate — comfortable with budgets, reports, and financial summaries

• Familiar with charity governance, safeguarding, and compliance requirements

• Confident, values-led, and able to hold accountability with care

• Highly organised, reliable, and able to manage competing priorities

• Committed to equity, inclusion, and community impact

This is a voluntary senior leadership role — unpaid, but with real scope and real responsibility. We are looking for someone who brings professional-level experience and wants to use it in the service of children and families in Hackney.
