Make a difference to the lives of rescue cats! We have a number of roles within our cat rescue based in York. 

Home visitors

Join our fantastic volunteer team to help us improve the welfare & quality of life for the cats & kittens in our care.

Our home visit volunteers help us to assess each home environment and a families circumstances to ensure our cats are suitably matched to their new family. This is a vital step in our rehoming process to ensure our cats get the happy ending they deserve.

You can dedicate as much or as little of your free time to this role- picking up outstanding home visits as and when you can.

This role can also be done remotely (from home) if necessary or preferred.

We rely on our fantastic team of dedicated volunteers to continue our work and would love for you to join us.

Fundraising

We are looking for cat loving people with a little free time and lots of ideas to join our fundraising team!
 

This role includes all aspects of fundraising including organising and taking charge of ideas/ events with the support of the wider team and helping out at events. 

We need your help to raise much needed funds to support the work that we do and help give cats and kittens in need a better future. 

Fostering

Join our fantastic volunteer team to help us improve the welfare and quality of life of cats & kittens in our care.

• Do you love cats but unable to commit to one of your own?

• Do you live approx 40 min radius of York?

• If you have pets, do you have a spare room to foster cats/ kittens in need?

• Do you have access to a vehicle?
   

We are looking for people to join our wonderful supportive team of foster carers! 

Caring for cats/ kittens in your home while they undergo rehabilitation and wait to be adopted doesn't cost you a penny. We provide full training & support along the way.

Transport Volunteers

We are always looking for transport volunteers to join our team. This role involves transporting animals, equipment and donations too and from various locations in and around the York area. We may also occasionally need help transporting cats and equipment from further afield.

• Can think strategically and contribute to constructive discussions.
• Is committed to equality, inclusion and the social model of disability.
• Can commit to attending four Board meetings per year and reading papers in advance.

We are looking for friendly, enthusiastic and energetic volunteers to walk our London Bridges Wellness Walk route with our participants to be someone that walkers can chat to if they’ve arrived and walking alone, provide a morale boost and support.

As the UK’s leading diabetes charity, it’s our job to tackle the diabetes crisis. We’re here to prevent type 2 diabetes, campaign for and support everyone affected by diabetes, and fund research that will one day lead us to a cure.

Thousands of people from across the UK will take part in our fun and family-friendly, sponsored Wellness Walks. It’s a chance to get out outside, take a deep breath, seize the day and change the world for everyone affected by diabetes.

Route volunteers guide walkers accurately and keep enthusiasm high. You must be aged 16+ to volunteer for this role (16 - 17 year olds must with be with a parent or guardian aged 18+), Volunteers in these roles will be positioned at key points on the walk route and will:

• Ensure walkers are heading in the right direction
• Motivate and cheer people on as they walk past your position
• Hand out hypo snacks, plasters or report medical incidents
• Monitor and report back to the route manager

Belfast Memory Walk is back for 2026, and so are our amazing volunteering opportunities. Memory Walk is so much more than a sponsored walk. Every year thousands of people come together to remember and bring hope for a brighter future.  It will take a society to beat dementia and by volunteering at Memory Walk you can be a part of it.

This is a walk like no other; this is thousands of people walking for a better future for those with dementia. Join the volunteer team on Saturday 26th September at Ormeau Park, in Belfast.

There is something for everyone, with roles based in the event site and along the route. Be part of an unforgettable event experience as you cheer at a marshal point, follow the route as a back marker, sell some goodies or congratulate walkers with their finish line medal. You will have the opportunity to pair up with a friend or another volunteer and we’ll make sure you have everything you need!

Our Shop Volunteers raise money for the people we support with a Learning Disability. Do you have a few hours a week to spare and share your time with us?

Our retail roles are varied and fun. You could be sorting donations from the public, dressing our window or serving customers on the till. There are many people from different walks of life and it's a great way to get practical experience and to meet new people.

This role will take place on a weekly basis for a few hours We will try our best to be flexible around the best time for you, but also need to consider the store opening times and volunteer rota. It could be a weekday or weekend, morning or afternoon, our stores are usually open 7 days a week. We’d appreciate any time that you can spare.

Whilst in the store, you will help with activities based on the needs of the Store Manager.

 **Tasks you could get up to whilst volunteering could include:**

- Serving customers on the till
- Taking stock donations from the public
- Tagging and steaming stock for the shop floor
- Dressing the window displays
- Asking people to join us as a volunteer

**As a Retail Volunteer you will be:**

- Friendly and Approachable

Inspire the next generation of tech talent from just 1-2 hours a week

Thousands of young people across the UK are interested in technology but have never met someone who works in the sector. They've never had the chance to ask questions, explore pathways into the industry, or hear someone say, "You can do this too."

As an IntoTech online mentor, you can help change that.

Brightside is recruiting 700 volunteer technology professionals to support young people aged 14-16 as they explore careers in technology. Delivered in partnership with Futures for All and generously funded by the Hg Foundation, the programme will launch in January 2026, connecting more than 2,000 young people with professionals working across the tech sector.

Over 12 weeks, you'll connect with a young person through Brightside's secure online mentoring platform, sharing your experiences, answering questions, and helping them build confidence about their future. Young people choose their own mentor, creating meaningful conversations that broaden horizons and bring careers in technology to life.

The mentoring is entirely text-based and asynchronous, so there's no need to coordinate diaries or attend regular calls. You can respond at times that suit you, making it easy to fit around work and other commitments. Most mentors volunteer for just 1-2 hours a week.

You don't need any previous mentoring experience. We'll provide training, guidance and ongoing support, and we'll complete your DBS check before the programme begins. Onboarding will take place between now and December, with opportunities to get involved in other Brightside mentoring programmes in the meantime.

With 23 years' experience supporting young people through mentoring, Brightside operates the UK's safest online mentoring platform, enabling meaningful, moderated engagement between volunteers and young people.
