About the role:

As a Shop Volunteer you’ll be joining a friendly, welcoming team of volunteers and staff who support each other and have a lot of fun along the way. We value every volunteer and the unique perspective, skills and energy you bring. 

Whether you’re sorting donations, creating beautiful displays, or chatting to customers, every task you take on helps to build a more inclusive world. 

We value volunteer development, and as part of this role your can develop your skills further by training to become a till user alongside your regular shop volunteer responsibilities, or progressing into a Key volunteer, a role which includes opening, running, and closing the shop in the absence of the manager.

No matter your reason for volunteering – whether it’s to meet new people, build new skills or support Sense’s cause – there’s a place for you in one of our shops. 

Due to the nature of the role, we require all applicants to be aged 16 or over. You must have a UK address to volunteer with Sense.

Key responsibilities: Shop volunteer 

You’ll spend time doing a range of activities, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service, helping create a wonderful shopping experience.
• Receiving donated items from the public, thanking them for their support.
• Sorting, steaming and preparing donations for sale.
• Helping to display stock in eye-catching and exciting ways.
• Keeping the shop floor clean, safe and tidy.
• Talking to customers about Sense and the work we do.

Key responsibilities: Till volunteer

Being a till volunteer includes all the same responsibilities as a shop volunteer, however, when you’re ready, we’ll provide you with additional training to:

• Serve customers on the till in a warm and friendly way.
• Put sales through the till, packing them and thanking the customer for shopping with us.
• Talk to customers about Gift Aid and other fundraising initiatives.

Key responsibilities: Key volunteer 

Being a Key volunteer includes all the same responsibilities as a shop and till volunteer. However, if you’re interested in taking on additional responsibilities, you can train to become a Key Volunteer, helping the shop manager by:

• Helping supervise the shop and other volunteers.
• Supporting the shop manager to make sure customers have a great experience.
• Opening and closing the shop when needed.
• Cashing up at the end of the day.

As a charity we are able to help thousands of cats each year thanks to the generous donations we receive from members of the public. Our fundraising volunteers use their passion for cats and people to raise the vital funds needed to help more cats and kittens in need. As a fundraising volunteer we want to support you to fundraise in whatever way suits you best, whether that’s organising a fundraising event, fundraising online, promoting fundraising activities on social media, completing administration or supporting the development of new fundraising ideas! What we need from you

This is a really flexible role, you can choose what you’d like to get involved with, for example: 

• face-to-face fundraising. Organising or helping with fundraising events, running supermarket collections and fundraising stands, monitoring collection tins 

• online fundraising. Setting up online appeals and writing impactful cat case studies that maximise donations

• marketing. Spreading the word about our fundraising activities, for example on social media and with the local press  

• completing administration. Processing donations, sorting and recording donated goods, completing Gift Aid paperwork

● championing our work. Getting involved with developing new fundraising ideas and increasing community engagement

● photography. Capturing images of cats in care, cats we are helping, events and all things Cats Protection

​Who are Governors for Schools?

Governors for Schools operates across England and Wales to improve educational standards and ensure all children and young people have the chance to realise their full potential.

We believe the key to improving school performance is effective governance. By finding, nurturing and supporting a committed network of governors, we drive positive systematic change that benefits each and every student, regardless of their background.

Governors for Schools recruits and matches volunteers with school governing boards and provides ongoing support.

What’s involved?

There are governor vacancies across England and Wales. Some schools are also looking for remote governors who don't need to live near the school they support.

Governors volunteer at board level to set the strategic vision for their school. This involves constructively challenging current processes, using your unique skills to support senior leaders, and overseeing school finances. You’ll be involved in areas such as monitoring, budget management, and data analysis. As well as putting your expertise to good use, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your professional skills. Ultimately, you’ll work towards facilitating the delivery of a broad and exciting curriculum and oversee wellbeing and inclusion initiatives. Governance represents a fantastic opportunity to develop yourself while making a real impact on the education of children and young people.

Governors work collaboratively with the headteacher and other members of the board, including parents and school staff. In most schools, full board meetings are held termly, as are committee meetings. Many governors will sit on a committee linked to their expertise or interests, such as teaching and learning or finance and resources. In addition to attending meetings, governors will need to read the papers in advance, complete training courses, and occasionally visit their school.

Governors usually support schools for a period of four years and with an estimated time commitment of 7 hours per month. During these hours, you will attend meetings, read papers, attend training sessions, and make occasional visits to school.

Who can be a governor?

The most important part of being a governor is the ability to ask questions, provide support and have the best interests of the school at heart. You don't have to be a parent or have experience in education to become a governor. Schools seek a  wide range of skills to support the board, including finance, HR, and data analysis.

Boards also need governors with a diversity of backgrounds and lived experiences to ensure a range of perspectives are considered during board meetings.

Schools welcome professional experience, as well as community insight and experience of working collaboratively.

You need to be aged 18 or above and there are certain criminal convictions that would exclude you from the role. A Disclosure and Barring Service check will be carried out by the school.

What’s the process?

You can find out more about the school governor role by attending one of our recruitment webinars.

You can complete your online profile on the website, including your motivation to take on the role, your skills and your school preferences. Your regional Partnership Manager will then look at vacancies that match your requirements. Once a school is identified, you will have the opportunity to discuss the role with them in more detail, visit the school, and observe a meeting. If appointed, a DBS check will take place and, in some cases, the school will seek references.

Ongoing support

Governors for Schools isn’t just a matching service. We want to help you thrive in your role through bespoke and ongoing support. We provide eLearning and monthly webinars covering a variety of topics to increase your knowledge of the education sector and governance. You’ll also have access to The Key for School Governors, an information hub designed to show new governors the ropes and offer a useful point of reference for existing governors.

A bit about this role

As a charity we can continue to help cats and kittens in need thanks to the donations we receive at fundraising events from generous members of the public. Our fundraising event helpers have the exciting and varied role of helping at local fundraising events - such as cakes sales, barn dances, quiz nights – and everything in between!

However much time you can give, your contribution will help raise much needed funds to continue the work of Cats Protection.

Shopmobility is a scheme that supports people to hire mobility aids during their visit to the city. We're based in Chantry Place (previously Chapelfield Shopping Centre) and we are looking for volunteers to help with all aspects of the day-to-day running of the shop.This is a great opportunity to volunteer, build your skills and meet new people! 

Role overview: 

 As is typical of working with the community, no one day is the same.  As such, the role may include, but is not limited to: 

• Opening the site ready for business and helping to prepare the shop 
• Closing the shop at the end of the day 
• Greeting customers and acting as a friendly, supportive and welcoming face 
• Supporting customers to work out what they need, and to hire the equipmen
• Keeping the site looking presentable and welcoming
• Handling cash and taking card payments

 The site will follow the COVID19 safety guidelines and volunteers will be reimbursed reasonable expenses incurred whilst supporting us.

An international child protection NGO headquartered in Cambodia is seeking a volunteer accountant to review and strengthen accounting systems, software and financial management processes.

The organisation works across Southeast Asia, supporting vulnerable children, young people and communities through programmes focused on child protection, education, livelihoods and social inclusion.

The volunteer will work alongside the finance team to assess current systems and support practical improvements across financial management and reporting.

Key areas of support may include accounting systems, software options, financial reporting consistency, internal controls and practical systems improvements across country programmes.

Axial Spondyloarthritis International Federation (ASIF) is looking for a passionate and experienced, voluntary, legal/governance Trustee to join our Board and help shape the future of our international membership charity supporting people living with axSpA worldwide.

This voluntary role is ideal for someone with strong knowledge of UK charity law and/or governance and risk management.  If you are a confident communicator with extensive legal and/or governance experience and a desire to use those skills to support an international charity, we would love to hear from you.  Your expertise, insight and judgement could help ASIF to further its work to improve the quality of life for people living with Axial Spondyloarthritis across the world.

Role purpose
The Legal/Governance Trustee will contribute to the effective governance and strategic leadership of the charity.  They will provide strategic oversight, ensuring the organisation acts within legal frameworks, charity regulations, and its own governing documents.  They advise on compliance, manage risk and promote high standards of governance.  This voluntary, non-executive role requires legal expertise, knowledge of UK Charity Commission compliance and commitment to ASIF’s mission.

Key responsibilities

• Actively participate in Board meetings and relevant Board committee meetings (F&GP), providing objective advice on legal, governance and risk issues.
• Work with the Chair, Director of Operations and other trustees to ensure the charity maintains the highest standards of governance, complies with all relevant laws and regulations and delivers on its mission.
• Contribute to the development and scrutiny of organisational strategies, policies, and procedures to ensure accountability
• Strategic advice: Provide legal expertise on strategic decision, risk management and safeguarding
• Assist in drafting or reviewing trustees’ reports, policies, and contracts (in particular grant contracts)
• Contribute to the identification of, and where appropriate, mitigate organisational risks, including reputation and financial, ensuring sustainability.

Time commitment:1-4 hours per month 

Person specification

• Qualified solicitor or barrister or charity governance expert with strong understanding of UK charity law, compliance and governance frameworks.
• Helpful to have an understanding of the governance of an international membership charity.
• Ability to think creatively and contribute to long-term planning.
• Dedication to ASIF’s mission and willingness to devote the necessary time.
• Ethical standards, integrity and sound, independent objective judgement.
• Because ASIF is registered in the UK, it is advisable for business purposes to have two UK-based trustees.  This Trustee should be UK-based.

• The position is voluntary/unremunerated.  Reasonable expenses incurred in the course of duties will be reimbursed in line with the charity’s policy.
• Term:  initial co-opted, then elected for 3-year term with potential for reappointment (to a maximum of 9 years).

• To be accountable for ensuring our Charity complies with its governing documents, charity law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
• To ensure that our Charity pursues its charitable objects as defined in the constitution.
• To ensure that we apply our resources exclusively in furtherance of our objectives, while working flexibly to meet the changing needs of our beneficiaries.
• To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees’ role of giving firm strategic direction to the Charity, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets and standards.
• To act with integrity and avoid any personal conflicts of interest or misuse of charity funds or assets and to act in the best interests of the Charity and its beneficiaries, to safeguard our name and values.
• To ensure the financial stability of ASIF and to ensure that risks it is exposed to are properly assessed and managed.
• To assist the Chair and to support and monitor the Director of Operations.
• To use reasonable care and skill in their work as a trustee, using personal skills and experience as needed, plus any specific knowledge or experience to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decision, to ensure that the charity is well-run and efficient and ensure external professional advice is sought where necessary.
• In conjunction with the other trustees to ensure that delegated responsibilities are met. 

Our shops help raise lots of money for us. It’s always lovely chatting to our customers about the fabulous items we sell and telling them about the fantastic work that we do. As a volunteer you will get the chance to meet new people and make friends, plus be part of an amazing team of volunteers. There’s so much for you to get stuck into when volunteering in our shops. We get lots of donations so you will be rolling up your sleeves in the back room where you will be receiving, sorting, steaming and pricing donations, it's always exciting when one of our volunteers spots a real gem. On the shop floor, as well as welcoming and serving our customers with a smile, you will be using the till (don't worry, we will show you how) and handling money. When people come in to donate items you will also be completing the Gift Aid forms that let their donations help us even more. It’s really important that our window and shop displays look appealing so people keep visiting our shops, so you'll be wielding a duster and vacuum as well as your imagination to make the shop look its best. It would be ideal if you could volunteer one shift a week, which is about four hours but we're also happy to have more flexible times. No special skills are needed as we will show you what to do and will provide all the training you need. But if you have any experience or particular interest tell us, it may come in useful.
