We provide advice and support to empower anybody experiencing a mental health problem and we campaign to improve services, raise awareness, and promote understanding.

Our volunteers are a fundamental part of our shops. Any time which they volunteer at our shops, help us be there for more people who are experiencing a mental health problem. 

About the volunteer role

To provide our volunteers with opportunities to gain a variety of skills and experience, we offer them a range of volunteer roles to choose from, which include:

• Stock preparation volunteer
• Volunteer shop sales assistant
• Volunteer stock generation assistant
• Volunteer window dresser/Merchandiser
• Specialist knowledge volunteer (antiques and collectables)
• Specialist knowledge volunteer (books and entertainment)

Key tasks

There is a variety of tasks within the above mentioned roles that our volunteers get involved with, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers with their purchases, providing them with great customer service and a delightful shopping experience
• Receiving donated items from members of the public
• Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated items for sale
• Creating visually appealing window and in-store displays
• Keeping the shop floor well stocked, clean and coordinated
• Processing sales and serving at the till
• Signing up gift aid donors
• Stock rotation
• Identifying special or valuable items within donated stock

We are looking for a friendly, patient and kind volunteer befriender to visit a gentleman with a calm soul, in Ickenham. Spending time together might involve sitting in the garden or in his flat, perhaps looking at pictures or magazines of trains, which he is particularly fond of, or going for small walks in the local community joined by one of his carers. He is hard of hearing and doesn’t communicate verbally, so a calm and friendly approach is key. If you’re someone who values quiet connection and meaningful moments, we’d love to hear from you

We offer a lifelong befriending service for adults with learning disabilities. Matching the skills and interests of passionate visitors with the specific hobbies and interests of the people we visit. Visitors visit six times a year and, in many cases, the visitor is the only person in someone’s life who isn’t paid to be there for them.

This is a Check in visit role, meaning that your visits are likely to be short - on average 30 minutes or less. Some of the people we visit may be unable to communicate with words. Sometimes the person might choose not to meet with their visitor. Your visit is however very important, and these are some of the things you could be doing on a visit:

• Checking in on their well-being and speak to support staff to get an update on how the person is doing
• You might be able to bring a treat that the person enjoys, like chocolates or fruit.
• Some people we support enjoy sensory experiences so items that will stimulate their senses can also help you create a sense of connection with the person you visit.

Your volunteer manager will be happy to help you with ideas and suggestions.

The Befriender 'In Home' Volunteer will play an important role by providing companionship to someone we support at our supported living service by spending time with them, visiting them in the home and doing activities they enjoy. These might include chatting over a cup of tea, reading books, playing board games, etc.

As a Volunteer Musician, you will bring joy, comfort, and connection to the people we support, by sharing live music. Your performances will provide meaningful engagement, foster a sense of community, and enhance emotional and mental well-being.

Tailor performances to the preferences and needs of the people we support (e.g., familiar songs or soothing melodies).

• Encourage the people we support to sing along or participate in simple ways (e.g., clapping, tapping rhythms).

• Create a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere during your sessions.

• Adjust your style or volume to suit the home setting and individuals’ sensitivities.

• Be attentive to the emotional and physical responses of individuals during performances.

• Work with care home staff to schedule performances and understand the unique needs of the residents.

To ensure the safety of the people we support, we require a DBS check and two satisfactory references before a volunteer role is confirmed. As you will be volunteering directly with vulnerable individuals, you will also be required to undertake safeguarding training, as well as any training which is specific to the role.

Hidayah is a volunteer-led organisation supporting LGBTQ+ Muslims through community support, advocacy, education, and wellbeing initiatives.

The treasurer carries out Hidayah’s financial responsibilities, files reports, and presents regularly to the Board of Trustees. 

What do we specifically expect of this role?

• To take accountability for the bank account and to be an authorised signatory.

• To present financial updates at Trustee meetings and to devolve budgets where necessary.

• To ensure adherence to budgets.

• To present a predicted target and actual budget for the year.

• To work with the chair to give breakdowns of costings for fundraising bids and for events/activities/paid members of staff.

• To create the annual year-end financial report for the Charity Commission.

• To seek out revenue opportunities within the limits of Hidayah’s activities.

• To document how restricted and unrestricted funds are spent, including reports for grant funders.

• To approach organisations for donations and sponsorship opportunities.

• To increase revenue through public donations (online and actual) and to be proactive in doing this.

• To work with other Trustees to plan income-generating activities.

How much commitment is required?

This role requires a minimum commitment of 4–5 hours per week, with additional time required during busy periods or organisational activities. The following commitments are in place for all Hidayah Trustees:

• To be able to attend all Trustee meetings.

• To deliver a comprehensive report at each Board meeting with updates, completing actions in time;

• To aim to attend all other meetings as necessary, including the annual Strategy Day, annual General Meeting and (where geography permits) Hidayah events.

• To help to fundraise for and advertise any Hidayah events and fundraising drives.

• To be part of a communications group (via Discord) to keep up to date with Hidayah developments.

• To contribute to and to maintain the administration of our file-sharing system, Google Drive, so it is always up-to-date with clear records, templates, and forms.

• To check emails and to respond when needed.

• Line managing the finance assistant, including regular 121 meetings.

• Enthusiasm, dedication, responsiveness, flexibility, and eagerness in supporting the aims, vision, and mission of Hidayah.

• To contribute to the Charity Commission's annual report once a year.

• The role is subject to a 6-month probationary period.

• To read new Hidayah policies and initiatives.

• To read, understand, and agree with the constitution of Hidayah (available on the website).

What do we expect from a treasurer?

Please note that you must agree with and fit the essential criteria below to be eligible to volunteer in this role:

Knowledge & Experience:

• Educated to degree level or has experience which demonstrates equivalent analytical ability.

• Knowledge of quality assurance systems and their benefits for the voluntary sector.

• Knowledge of good governance procedures for the voluntary sector.

• Experience of budget management, preferably in the charity sector, but applicable to other sectors.

• High level of numeracy and close attention to detail.

• Basic AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) experience is desirable but not essential.

Skills & Attributes

• Ability or willingness to learn line managing, developing, coaching, and motivating volunteers.

• Working and influencing at both a strategic and operational level, ensuring excellent working relationships with trustees and volunteers.

• A self-starter who can maintain their workload with minimal supervision.

AFRIL’s Casework and Advocacy Team provides complex casework and legal interventions in the areas of housing and homelessness, Asylum Support, Benefits, No Recourse to Public Funds and Community Care. AFRIL also offers community activities to asylum seekers living in Lewisham.

AFRIL’s ESOL teacher volunteers will work with AFRIL’s Community Activities Coordinator to provide friendly, structured and professional ESOL and English Conversation activities to participants.

ABOUT US
As a sustainability charity, we take donated surplus (over-stocked) food and redistribute it to people in need.
The initiatives we support include food banks, schools, community groups and charities.
Our vital work supports people experiencing extreme hardship and prevents good food going to landfill, where it would contribute to climate warming through greenhouse gas emissions. 
We need help in our warehouse to receive and record supplies, load and unload vans, and prepare orders for delivery. In return, we offer training and support to help you obtain skills and experience if you are seeking work. If you're not looking for a job, volunteering with us is rewarding in many other ways; offering an opportunity to make friends, keep physically active and support your community.

This role is vital to FareShare's work, ensuring that the food in our warehouse is sorted, labelled and organised into orders.
It is perfect for someone who is:

a) Looking for a practical activity to keep busy and physically fit.
b) Looking for experience and skills to gain employment in the food industry, warehousing or customer service.
c) Wanting to help their community and help tackle global warming.
d) Wanting to make new friends.

Our volunteer roles are available Monday to Friday, for a whole or half day, with shifts between 8:30-am-12:30pm and 12:30-4:30pm. 
Volunteers are typically involved on one day a week.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
Receiving, sorting, cataloguing and storing chilled and ambient food and preparing orders for delivery. 
Ensuring food quality and safety by checking ‘use by’ and ‘best before’ dates.
Unpacking deliveries, recording and categorising food.
Assembling food orders.
Assisting our Community Food Members with their order collections.
Maintaining health and safety and hygiene standards. 
Helping with cleaning and other routine tasks.

PERSON SPECIFICATION: You must...
Be reasonably physically fit to carry out tasks, including lifting and loading.
Speak English well in order to communicate clearly with our Community Food Members, and to understand and follow instructions and health and safety rules. 
Have basic literacy and numeracy skills to record details of donated food.
Be able to work to Health and Safety standards.
Be happy to complete tasks independently according to instruction.
Be positive, friendly and enthusiastic about tackling food waste and food insecurity.
Be reliable and able to commit to an agreed session/day.

LOCATION
We are located in Maynard House, New Smithfield Market, Openshaw, M11 2WJ, which is easily reachable on public transport. We have free-onsite parking and secure storage for bicycles.

AFRIL’s Casework and Advocacy Team provides complex casework and legal interventions in the areas of housing and homelessness, Asylum Support, Benefits, No Recourse to Public Funds and Community Care. AFRIL also offers community activities to the asylum seekers living in Lewisham.

AFRIL’s Community Activities & Outreach Volunteer will have the opportunity to volunteer at AFRIL’s Community Activity sessions (weekly) and Outreach Advice sessions (fortnightly). The volunteers will provide friendly and professional support to participants, take down basic information and support AFRIL staff where appropriate.

Our volunteers are crucial in supporting AFRIL staff to obtain the best outcomes for our clients, and this role will provide you with valuable insight into the immigration system and its many challenges.

To lead, motivate and encourage the volunteers at each foodbank session and ensure every person visiting a foodbank session receives a friendly welcome and is treated with compassion, respect and dignity

Organise each foodbank session and ensure each is run efficiently and to a high standard in accordance with the Trussell franchise and Arden Foodbank policies and procedures

Lead a short team briefing with volunteers at the beginning of each foodbank session and a short session review at the end

Ensure that the distribution centre is a safe place for all clients and volunteers, that safeguarding procedures are understood and implemented, and that client confidentiality is respected

Deal appropriately with incidents, unforeseen events, or any other issues

Monitor health and safety at each foodbank session and record accidents and near misses

Review stock levels at the end of each foodbank session and complete a restock order to replace food and other items given out at that session

Ensure all necessary information is accurately recorded on the Data Collection System and communicate with referral agencies in response to queries or issues arising from vouchers presented by clients

Provide the Foodbank Manager with a report at the end of each session and raise any concerns regarding the operation of the session, or the distribution centre

Undertake the training of volunteers as may be required

The Admin Volunteer will support our home/service with general day-to-day, ad hoc, administrative tasks, such as:

• Organising files

• Archiving and scanning paperwork

• Collecting and inputting data

• Answering phone calls and welcoming visitors.

Skills required

• To be proficient in Microsoft Office software.

• Very good organisational skills and eye for detail.

• To be punctual and reliable.

• To be able to deal with information in line with our data protection and confidentiality procedures.

Help shape a new movement for men’s wellbeing and personal growth

MINDSET is a new charity with a bold mission: to equip men with the tools, skills, and approaches they need to live happier, healthier, more resilient lives — in a non‑clinical, non‑therapeutic, practical way.

We’re building something meaningful from the ground up, and we’re looking for a small group of committed volunteers to help shape our foundation.

What is the Steering Group?

The Steering Group is a temporary leadership team (6–12 months) that will guide the early development of MINDSET before we formally register as a charity and appoint Trustees.

You’ll help shape:

• our mission and values

• our first programmes and workshops

• our safeguarding and boundaries

• our culture and tone

• our community outreach

• our long‑term structure and governance

This is your chance to influence a charity at the very beginning.

Whether you’re a jobseeker interested in a career in construction or woodwork, a student or recent college graduate seeking experience, or just someone with spare time on your hands, wanting to do something positive and meet new people, volunteering with the Touch Wood project at EMERGE 3Rs may be just the ticket!

Touch Wood is a wood recycling and upcycling initiative, which collects surplus and waste wood and timber and gives it a new lease of life, preventing it from being burned, chipped, or dumped in landfill.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

* Preparing wood for resale

* Assisting with the construction of wooden products, from small household items to pieces of furniture

Our Touch Wood volunteers are able to gain skills in practical woodworking, as we offer hands-on experience of working with reclaimed timber; from making basic lumber products ready for resale, through to assisting with the creation of bespoke items, such as kitchen equipment and home and garden furniture.

Full training in woodworking and health and safety is provided, along with Personal Protection Equipment.
Capped reimbursement of expenses is awarded for lunches and travel, where applicable.

The UK generates around 5 million tonnes of wood waste every year, but less than 1% is reused. Touch Wood rescues waste timber that would otherwise be landfilled or turned into woodchip; creating jobs and training opportunities for disadvantaged local people at the same time. We collect from construction sites, industrial estates and other commercial sources, reclaiming everything from pallets to indoor cycle tracks – you name it, we take it! Anything we can’t reuse is locally recycled, so nothing goes to waste. This reduces the carbon emissions associated with disposing of waste wood, offers cost savings for DIY enthusiasts, and provides training and job potential to volunteers in the workshop. Some of the timber we work with comes from high profile sources, including the entire track of the Manchester Velodrome cycling centre and wood removed in the recent refurbishment of Manchester’s historic Town Hall!

Our skilled team of staff and volunteers often use reclaimed timber to create beautiful and practical products, such as home and garden furniture. We regularly create bespoke pieces to order; some of it for famous clients like Olympic cycling champions Jason and Laura Kenny, for whom we made a table from the Manchester Velodrome track.

Please be advised that our volunteers require a fair level of physical fitness and manual dexterity as the role is entirely practical.

Our Touch Wood workshop and wood store is open Mon-Fri, 8.30am - 4pm.
We occupy a unit at Maynard House, inside New Smithfield Market, in Openshaw, North Manchester, which is accessed from the main entrance on Whitworth Street East (off Ashton Old Road). The site is served well by buses, and we have free parking onsite, as well as secure storage racks for pushbikes.

​IMPORTANT NOTE:
You must be resident in the UK and living in Greater Manchester, or within easy commuting distance of our base, in order to volunteer with us. There are no exceptions to this rule. This is because we require volunteers to be able to reliably commit to regular shifts for some of our roles. We are unable to offer sponsorship for overseas applicants.

We are looking for volunteer befrienders to spend some time with our clients  in and around Central London or  to speak to them over the phone.  Our current needs are in Tulse Hill, Stockwell, Annerley, and Stepney Green.Locations change as new referrals come in, so if you are interested in befriending and want to make positive difference to  an older persons emotional well being, please contact us, we may have a client in your area!  

Befriending is a simple way to make a positive difference to someone who feels alone, or is socially isolated.  Your gift of time and companionship will give them, and you, something to look forward to. As one of our volunteers once said,“this is an easy, very meaningful way to help someone and is immensely rewarding and fun!”  

Meetings are regular, usually weekly or fortnightly, for at least six months although most of our volunteers stay involved for  longer, only because they enjoy what they do!  Phone calls can me made from any quiet space at your home or workplace. 

You might visit a client in their home, or meet them in the community, chatting in coffee shops or talking while you walk - this really depends on what our client wants to do.  Our clients are  older Scots (60 plus) who simply want to do some of the activities that most of us take for granted.

We provide training before you start, ongoing support once you are matched, out of pocket expenses, references, social events and newsletters. 

This could be an ideal opportunity gain practical experience of working with adults in a health and social care setting, or for anyonewho enjoys meeting new people and making their lives a little brighter.

An enhanced DBS check will be processed  for successful applicants and two references are required. 

FareShare Greater Manchester is looking for volunteer Driver's Assistants to join our busy friendly delivery team with redistributing tonnes of surplus food a month to charities and community initiatives across Greater Manchester.

FareShare is a national charity fighting food poverty and global warming by tackling food surplus. We source overstocked food from retailers and manufacturers and engage many volunteers to help re-distribute it to over 220 frontline charities and community groups across Greater Manchester. These groups, in turn, provide meals to vulnerable people experiencing food poverty, individuals who are homeless, families, and people who are unemployed or socially isolated. This food would otherwise have gone to waste, so we are simultaneously supporting people in need and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Key responsibilities

Working closely with the driver of a temperature-controlled 3.5 tonne Mercedes Sprinter van to deliver surplus food orders to the premises of the benevolent projects we support. 

Loading and unloading the vehicle and carrying out a range of tasks, from basic vehicle checks to delivery administration.

The required skills and attributes are:

• Reliability and ability to commit to pre-agreed volunteer shifts (ESSENTIAL)

Our operating hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm.

Driver and Driver’s Assistant shifts begin at 8:30am. 

We welcome volunteers who can commit to one day a week. 

The days and rota hours of volunteering are agreed around your availability.

​IMPORTANT NOTE:
You must be resident in the UK and living in Greater Manchester, or within easy commuting distance of our base, in order to volunteer with us. There are no exceptions to this rule. This is because we require volunteers to be able to reliably commit to regular shifts for some of our roles. We are unable to offer sponsorship for overseas applicants.
