Over a million children in the UK have no contact whatsoever with one of their parents after separation. This can lead to far-reaching physical and emotional problems, with issues including antisocial behaviour, distress and unhappiness.

We are seeking a committed and strategic Chair of Trustees to lead our excellent Board of Trustees and ensure our Child Contact Centre remains safe, sustainable and child-centred.

Our centre provides a safe, friendly and neutral space where children from separated families can spend time with the non-resident parent and, in some cases, grandparents.

About the Role

The Chair will:

• Lead and develop an effective Board of Trustees
• Ensure safeguarding and child welfare remain paramount
• Provide strategic oversight
• Support and work with the Centre Co-ordinator without micromanaging

We are looking for someone with:

• Strong leadership skills
• Emotional intelligence
• Sound judgement and integrity
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
• The ability to handle complaints or reputational issues
• A calm disposition during a possible crisis
• The ability to act as an ambassador for the centre within the local community

Ideally, we feel this role would suit a retired person, possibly with a background in working with children in some capacity or with knowledge of child welfare. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference to children and families in our community.

Time Commitment

Board meetings are held quarterly, plus an AGM usually held in July.

There is also an expectation to attend fundraising events and make occasional visits to the centre.

Coventry Citizens Advice is recruiting new trustees to join its Board of Directors.

We are one of the largest local Citizens Advice charities in England, helping more than 14,000 people each year with issues including debt, housing, welfare benefits and fuel poverty. For over 80 years we have been a trusted source of free, independent advice for the people of Coventry — and demand for our services has never been higher.

This is a genuine governance role. You will help set our strategic direction, oversee our finances, ensure we meet our legal duties as a charity, and hold the organisation accountable to the communities it serves. We want trustees who engage with the detail and bring their professional judgement to decisions that matter.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

No previous trustee or board experience is required — just sound independent judgement, strong communication skills, and a commitment to public service.

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with experience in:

These areas are of direct strategic importance to our work, and applicants with this background will be especially welcomed.

Online Sales Volunteer responsibilities

• Researching and listing the items for sale in our dedicated Vinted store.
• A picture is worth 1,000 words so ensuring that attractive photographs are taken to boost sales.
• Packaging items appropriately before posting them to the buyer.
• Maintaining accurate records of listed and sold items.

What we are looking for in our Online Sales Volunteers:

• Basic knowledge of any online selling platforms (Vinted, ebay, Whatnot)
• Good organisational skills and attention to detail 
• Ability to take clear photographs and write accurate descriptions
• Basic computer skills, including familiarity with email and online payment systems 
• Good communication skills and a friendly, helpful attitude
• Someone who is flexible and can offer an ongoing commitment

Our shops sell a mixture of donated items, including clothes, books, bric-a-brac and collectables, and a selection of new items. We require help on the shop floor and in our stock room or you could volunteer to do a mixture of both.

Volunteer Charity Shop Assistant responsibilities

• Helping customers in the shop find what they need.
• Accepting donations of items and money from the public.
• Processing sales through the till and card machine, including Gift Aid. We provide full training but if you prefer not to use the till there are other tasks you can get involved with instead.
• Sorting through donated items to determine what we can sell.
• Preparing donated items for sale by steaming and hanging items.
• Merchandising stock on the shop floor.
• Creating attractive shop window displays.

What we are looking for in a volunteer Charity Shop Assistant

• Friendly volunteers who are confident talking to people.
• Retail experience would be ideal but is not necessary as full training will be given.
• We are ideally aiming for someone who is flexible and can offer an ongoing commitment predominately 8 hours or more per week, help during weekdays is particularly welcome.
• Good communication and numeracy skills.
• Using the till is not essential, as you can help with other tasks.
• You will need to be aged 16 or over.
• Our induction is online and you will need basic IT skills and access to a computer. However, if you are unable to do this you may ask a friend to help you or we can arrange a paper-based induction instead.
