Trustees (Finance & Investment Expertise)
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Board of Trustees of the RCN Foundation, an independent charity that supports and strengthens nursing and midwifery to improve the health and wellbeing of the nation.
Since 2010, the Foundation has provided hardship, education, research and innovation funding to thousands of nurses, midwives, nursing associates and healthcare support workers across the UK. As the Foundation continues to deliver its ambitious strategy, we are seeking to appoint two Trustees with senior-level expertise in finance, accounting and/or investment governance to join the Board from April 2027. One of the successful candidates will also serve as Chair of the Income Generation and Investment Committee.
You will join a committed Board, helping to shape the Foundation’s strategic direction and ensuring it continues to deliver meaningful impact for the nursing and midwifery professions.
Trustee and Chair - Income Generation and Investment Committee
You will bring significant experience in finance, accounting, investment management or strategic financial oversight, alongside experience of chairing boards, committees or similar governance groups.
As Chair of the Income Generation and Investment Committee, you will provide leadership and oversight across the Foundation’s investment portfolio, fundraising activity and wider income generation strategy. You will support the Board in ensuring the Foundation’s long-term financial sustainability and will also represent the Foundation on the RCN Group Audit Committee.
Trustee - Finance & Investment
You will bring senior financial leadership experience, with expertise in areas such as finance, accounting, investment management or financial governance.
You will provide support and constructive challenge on matters including financial sustainability, investment performance, reserves and longer-term planning, contributing to the work of both the Board and the Income Generation and Investment Committee.
In addition, all candidates will demonstrate:
• A commitment to the mission of the RCN Foundation and supporting the nursing and midwifery workforce
• Experience operating at Board, Committee or senior leadership level
• Strong strategic thinking, judgement and decision-making skills
• An understanding of charity governance and financial stewardship

Key Responsibilities
Training Delivery
Facilitate Neurodiversity Training sessions (online or in-person), adapting content and delivery style to suit different audiences.
Use lived experience, professional knowledge, and evidence-based approaches to enhance participant learning and engagement.
Ensure all training content is accurate, up-to-date, and reflects current best practice.
Session Preparation
Review and prepare training materials in advance of each session.
Liaise with the Training Coordinator to confirm session logistics and participant needs.

Feedback & Continuous Improvement
Collect and respond to participant feedback to continually improve delivery.
Participate in debriefs and reflective practice with the Training Coordinator, other trainers, and volunteers.

Safeguarding & Professionalism
Adhere to AuDHD UK’s safeguarding, confidentiality, and data protection policies at all times.
Escalate any concerns or incidents to the Training Coordinator or Designated Safeguarding Lead.
Essential Skills & Attributes
Experience in delivering training, workshops, or group facilitation (neurodiversity or related topics preferred).
Strong communication and presentation skills.
Ability to engage diverse audiences and adapt content as needed.
Professionalism, reliability, and commitment to high standards.
A good understanding of Neurodivergence, mental health and late-diagnosis of neurodivergence and creating a positive, neuro-affirmative workplace.
Lived experience of AuDHD or neurodivergence (highly desirable).

We have good experience in these areas and are looking for a trustee to oversee and significantly contribute to decision-making regarding when and how to enter these markets. The postholder will ideally be a current or former leader of a social enterprise or charity that trades, who can provide the board with the expertise it needs to make informed decisions. This trustee will bring relevant insight on sustainable income diversification and fundraising strategy.
Trustee: Digital Governance
We handle sensitive client data, and act as a processor for sanitising donated devices. This creates significant cybersecurity, data protection responsibilities. We have a cybersecurity strategy, dedicated staff time and also receive pro-bono support to discharge those responsibilities effectively, but we need a trustee with expertise to provide genuine oversight in this area and represent the position at board level. Strong candidates will bring expertise in data governance, cybersecurity policy or digital risk management. We would particularly welcome candidates who bring expertise in digital inclusion alongside this.
Trustee: Safeguarding
As we scale up across the UK, we are making the intentional decision to deepen our relationship with our clients. We work with some of the most vulnerable people in the UK, so our board needs to be confident that we are providing proper oversight of how we keep them safe in the context of support. We are looking for a trustee with governance-level safeguarding experience who understands safeguarding frameworks and legislation, can scrutinise our policies and procedures, and hold our staff team to account in this area. This trustee will lead our Safeguarding sub-committee.

Roles available: Three trustee positions: Charity Trading and Commercialisation; Digital Governance; Safeguarding
Commitment: Approx 32 hours per year (see breakdown below)
Term: three years, renewable
Location: Online, with 1-2 in-person meetings in London per year
Remuneration: Voluntary, unpaid. Reasonable expenses reimbursed
Time commitment
Board meetings - 10-12 meetings per year, 1hr meetings
Paper reading & preparation - 6 hours per year
Sub-committee attendance - 4 hours per year
Ad-hoc governance and decision-making - 4 hours per year
Specialist contribution (emails, 1:1s with relevant staff) - 4 hours per year
External representation - 2 hours per year
Induction - 2 hours in the first year
Total: ~32 hours per year
