Volunteering in the shop
Our Retford Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.
It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

Coordinator Volunteer - Read Easy Leeds
Are you an enthusiastic volunteer looking for a new role where you'll be able to use your organisation and people skills to really make a difference? Are you passionate about helping others? Could you be part of someone’s journey towards learning to read?
Read Easy Leeds is a local charity that provides free, confidential, one-to-one reading coaching for adults who struggle with reading. As part of the Read Easy UK network, we help adults improve their reading skills, confidence and opportunities in life. We are looking to expand our work and are seeking new Coordinators to join our friendly team.
This voluntary position would be ideal for someone with strong organisational and problem-solving skills, alongside excellent people skills and a friendly, caring nature. If you enjoy helping others and finding practical solutions, this could be the perfect role for you.
Being a Coordinator is a vital and rewarding role within the Read Easy Leeds team. You will meet adults who want to learn to read and interview volunteer Reading Coaches. You will then pair Readers with Coaches and provide ongoing support, alongside our Literacy Specialist, checking in regularly to ensure that both Reader and Coach are progressing well. You will play an important role in helping the group continue to thrive and grow.
You do not need previous experience, and you do not need to have volunteered as a Reading Coach first. Full training and support will be provided by Read Easy UK, and you will work alongside an enthusiastic and supportive team.
The role is flexible and can largely be carried out from home. However, you will need to make occasional visits to reading pairs at venues across Leeds and attend occasional in-person meetings.
You can choose your own hours and the number of reading pairs you support. Most Coordinators spend around 3 to 5 hours per week in the role. Some daytime and evening availability is essential. To get the most from the role, we ask Coordinators to commit to supporting Read Easy Leeds for at least one year.

What the role involves

Hospital Visitor Volunteer
Hospital Visitor volunteers visit hospital settings to ensure that people detained under the Mental Health Act are aware that they have a legal right to an IMHA qualified advocate.The volunteers are instrumental in ensuring that clients get access to an advocate and can also support the work that advocates undertake.
As a hospital volunteer, you might:

attend events and ward meetings at local facilities

assist people to request advocacy support by completing a form online or calling our contact centre
All volunteering will take place Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:00. You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK. Please note that there is no opportunity to volunteer at weekends or in the evening.

Childline Volunteer Counsellor- Someone who wants to make a difference to children’s lives by being there to listen when they feel they have no one else to turn to. As a Childline counsellor, you’ll be there for young people and listen to them as they open up about whatever is worrying them, whether it’s bullying, abuse, self-harm or family relationships – you’ll be there to support them.
What you’ll do
You’ll volunteer in our Leeds Childline base, offering counselling support to children and young people over the phone or through our 1-2-1 online chat. Your supervisor will help you develop and evaluate your counselling skills. After your initial training, you will be able to help young people as well as identify when a child or young person may be at risk, but don’t worry a supervisor will be on hand to give you plenty of support.
What you’ll get
You’ll receive training sessions over 12 weeks to prepare you for the role. When you start your regular shifts, a supervisor will be around all times to support you. Every shift includes a briefing and debriefing alongside other volunteers. Supervisors will also give you regular one-to-one support and group supervisions.
What we’ll need from you
Signing up to be a Childline counsellor is a big commitment and requires lots of training so, we do ask people to stay in the role for a minimum of one year.
We’ll also need to do some routine safeguarding checks, including an enhanced criminal record check and at least two satisfactory references with at least one covering a period of five years or more with no gaps. It’s nothing to worry about, and we can answer any questions you have about this.

What will you be doing?
IOU is entering an exciting and transformational period as we approach our 50th anniversary in 2026 and continue the transition from a nationally recognised producing arts company into IOU Creation Centre — a new model centred on artist development, interdisciplinary making, creative technology, engineering, and community participation.
We are seeking a Treasurer to join our Board at a critical and ambitious point in the organisation’s development. Over the last few years, IOU has successfully diversified its business model through the creation of IOU Hostel Ltd, our trading subsidiary, which provides earned income, artist accommodation, and residency opportunities alongside our charitable activity. We are now undertaking important work to strengthen financial systems, reserves, governance structures, and long-term sustainability across both organisations.
Our Board is currently made up of trustees with experience across the arts, fundraising, governance, education, HR, and strategic development. The Treasurer will also chair our Finance Committee, which meets monthly online and works closely with the Executive Director and Finance Manager to review management accounts, budgets, risk, and financial planning before recommendations are made to the wider Board.
This is a particularly exciting time to join IOU. Alongside our 50th anniversary programme and major Heritage Lottery funded archive project, we are developing new partnerships, artist residency models, and approaches to cultural participation rooted in Calderdale and the North of England. We are also exploring how the Creation Centre can become a nationally distinctive rural centre for contemporary interdisciplinary art and making.

What are we looking for?
We are looking for a Treasurer who shares our belief in the value of arts, culture, and creativity as tools for social connection, experimentation, and positive change. We are particularly interested in someone who can combine strong financial insight with a collaborative and strategic approach to governance.
Our ideal candidate will have professional experience in finance, accounting, business management, or financial leadership, and be confident supporting a small but ambitious organisation through a period of development and transformation. Experience of working with charities, social enterprises, cultural organisations, or trading subsidiaries would be valuable, although not essential.

As IOU operates both as a charity and alongside a trading subsidiary (IOU Hostel Ltd), experience of mixed-income models, social enterprise, hospitality, or commercial trading would also be beneficial.
We value trustees who are thoughtful, open-minded, and interested in how organisations evolve. We are not looking for someone purely transactional or corporate in approach; we are looking for someone who understands how good governance can support creativity, people, and long-term resilience.
We are also committed to improving representation within our governance and leadership. We particularly welcome applications from people from ethnically diverse backgrounds, those with lived experience that is underrepresented in the cultural sector, and individuals who can bring different perspectives, networks, and experiences to Board discussions.
Previous trustee experience is not essential. We will provide support and induction for someone who is enthusiastic about contributing their skills and developing within the role.

IOU is approaching its 50th anniversary in 2026 and is evolving from a nationally recognised producing arts company into IOU Creation Centre — a new model focused on artist development, creative technology, interdisciplinary practice, engineering, participation, and community engagement. This role comes at a particularly important time. We are currently reviewing our financial systems, reporting structures, legal arrangements between the charity and trading subsidiary, and future business planning. Your insight and guidance will help shape these developments and support better decision-making across the organisation.
The Treasurer will also help improve confidence and understanding of financial information across the Board by ensuring reporting is clear, accessible, and strategically focused. This will support trustees from a range of professional backgrounds to engage more actively in financial discussions and governance.
Beyond finance, your support will help enable IOU to continue delivering ambitious artistic and community programmes across Calderdale and beyond. This includes artist residencies, workshops, touring work, heritage and archive projects, environmental initiatives, and opportunities for people who may not normally engage with arts and culture.
As an organisation rooted in community participation and diverse creative voices, we are also committed to strengthening representation within our governance and leadership. We recognise that this is an ongoing area of development for us, particularly in ensuring our Board better reflects the ethnic diversity and lived experiences of the communities we work with and alongside. Ready to make a difference to a young person's life? Team Up is seeking dynamic volunteer to help transform the lives of disadvantaged pupils by improving their grades and building confidence in their learning.
We are looking for inspirational role models who will tutor English or Maths once a week on one of our 10-12 week online programme, starting in September 2026.
You will be matched with a small number of pupils (max 1 or 2) and provide them with the academic support, encouragement and inspiration they need to get back on track. Our tuition programmes aim to build not just academic strength, but confidence and positivity towards learning as well.
All our volunteer tutors receive full training, lesson resources and support from a qualified teacher / team manager throughout their placement.

By the end of the programme, you will see how the support you give has enabled a young person to not only improve their grades, but also build long term resilience.

Equity, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EEDI) are at the heart of our work. We work with people with lived experience of MS, volunteers, and professionals to guide and direct our approach to EEDI.
The EEDI Reference Group is a group of people affected by MS who helped develop our previous EEDI strategy and now support the EEDI work in our more recent organisational strategy. They bring lived experience of marginalisation for example people from minoritised ethnic groups, the LGBTQ+ community, carers and disabled people.
This is an exciting opportunity to join our Equity, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EEDI) work. By attending monthly meetings you’ll use your lived and/or professional experience to provide advice, feedback, guidance and personal opinion on our EEDI work.
This is a home-based role, which will require attending online meetings of up to an hour, with up to 30 minutes of pre-reading and follow-up work before each one.
