Volunteering in the shop

Our Totnes Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

About Career Compass

Career Compass is a UK social mobility charity that helps sixth-form students from underrepresented backgrounds access professional careers. We connect young people with employers through work experience, mentoring, employer insight events, employability workshops and careers advice.

Since launching, we have supported over 12,500 students from more than 500 schools across the UK, helping them build confidence, develop employability skills and access opportunities they may not otherwise have.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a creative and proactive Volunteer Social Media Manager to help grow our Instagram presence and engage more sixth-form students with the free opportunities we offer.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with previous experience managing Instagram accounts who wants to use their skills to make a genuine social impact. You’ll play a key role in increasing our reach, inspiring young people and helping more students access life-changing career opportunities.

What You’ll Do

• Plan and schedule engaging Instagram content.
• Create and publish posts, reels, stories and carousels.
• Grow our Instagram following and increase student engagement.
• Develop content that resonates with sixth-form students (16-18-year-olds).
• Promote work experience, mentoring, employer events and career resources.
• Monitor performance and recommend ideas to improve reach and engagement.
• Keep up to date with Instagram trends and suggest new content ideas.
• Work closely with the Career Compass team to ensure content aligns with our mission and campaigns.

We’re Looking For Someone Who Has

• Previous experience managing Instagram accounts (charity, business or personal brand).
• Strong understanding of Instagram trends, engagement strategies and best practice.
• Experience creating engaging social media content using tools such as Canva or similar.
• Excellent written communication skills.
• Creativity, initiative and the ability to work independently.
• A passion for education, social mobility or supporting young people.

Time Commitment

• Approximately 1-2 hours per week.
• Fully remote.

The BDFA is seeking a new Volunteer Treasurer/Trustee to join our passionate and dedicated Board.

As a trustee, you will play a key role in shaping the strategic direction of the BDFA, ensuring strong governance, and helping to improve the lives of children, young people, and families affected by Batten disease across the UK.

The overall role of Treasurer is to maintain an overview of the organisation’s affairs, ensure its financial viability and ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained.

As our Treasurer, you will:

• Oversee, approve and present budgets, accounts and financial statements
• Assure that the financial resources of the organisation meet its present and future needs
• Prepare and present financial reports to the Board
• Ensure that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place
• Have oversight of and give guidance to BDFA Accounting & Financial Administration Officer
• Attend board meetings
• Present financial overview at the AGM

Ideal Background:

Fully qualified chartered accountant/financial qualifications and experience. Some experience of charity finance and fundraising.

We welcome suitably qualified applicants who share our commitment to inclusion, integrity, and advocacy, and who are willing to contribute their time, skills, and experience to drive meaningful change.

Symptoms sometimes begin in infancy and sometimes later in childhood, after apparently normal early development. Occasionally it may start in adulthood. In individuals suffering from Batten disease, nervous system function steadily declines, causing a wide variety of neurologic problems, including loss of vision and seizures. The life expectancy of a child born with Batten disease can vary, depending on the form of the disease and the age of onset. Some children die in early childhood, while others may be able to live into their teens or twenties.

The BDFA was registered as a charity in 2001 and our mission is “to enable children and adults who are affected by Batten disease to live life to the full and to provide families with the care and support they need so that they do not walk this path alone.” The BDFA offers informed guidance and support to families and the professionals who work with them, as well as actively raising awareness, and promoting research into the management of Batten disease to improve patient care pathways and ultimately find a cure.

Why we need you 

Our Voice Board brings together members of our community to help shape everything we do as a charity, making sure the voices of children, young people, and their families with lived experience of cancer are at the heart of our work. We’d love to hear a wide range of perspectives and applications are open for young people who have or have had cancer, as well as parents, carers, partners and siblings (applicants need to be 16 or older). If you’re passionate about improving the lives of children, young people and families affected by cancer and want to help influence decisions at Young Lives vs Cancer, we’d love to hear from you. 

By joining the team, you’ll take on the role of Voice Board Member for 2 years during which you’ll have the chance to build confidence, learn new skills, and connect with others who have been affected by cancer. After the 2 years on the Voice Board has finished there is also the opportunity to become a Voice Champion, helping to shape and deliver voice work across the organisation. 

What you’ll be doing 

As a Voice Board Member, you’ll use your experiences and ideas to help shape our work and make a real difference for the children, young people, and their families affected by cancer. 

Take part in key conversations 

• Join 4 Voice Board meetings each year to talk about important topics that help shape what we do 

• Take part in optional monthly online discussions about projects and areas of work 

 Work with others 

• Work with other Voice Board members and staff across the organisation 

• Work in partnership with the Voice Team to help shape our voice work 

• Share your views and experiences to help develop ideas and create change 

Use your voice 

• Share your honest thoughts, feedback and lived experience 

• Speak up about the issues that matter most to you and others 

• Help influence decisions, including decisions made by Trustees and Directors 

Get involved in shaping our work 

• Take part in a range of opportunities across the charity, including face-to-face training meetings twice a year to connect with other members and staff 

• All travel and accommodation is provided, and we’ll talk with you about any extra support you might need, including bringing someone with you or joining remotely if you’re on treatment 

• Get involved in optional, ad hoc activities and opportunities to share your story, help design services, and improve how things work 

• Choose how you get involved in a way that suits your time, interests and energy levels

We're excited to be recruiting a brand new Social Media & Digital Marketing Volunteer to play a vital role in amplifying the mission and activities of The Great Friendship Project.

This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a meaningful cause, gain hands-on experience in marketing and social media management for a non-profit, and make a positive impact on the lives of young people struggling with loneliness.

Key Responsibilities

- Content Creation: Develop original, captivating, and platform-relevant content for social media that embodies the organisation's mission and resonates with the target demographic.]

- Photography and Filming: Capture high-quality photos and videos at events, for campaigns, and for daily content needs, ensuring visuals align with the brand's voice and messaging.

- Social Media Strategy: Keep up-to-date with social media trends, create content plans, and ensure consistent posting to maintain and grow the platform's following.

- Cross-Promotion: Collaborate with partners and agencies to promote our content across other channels and vice versa.

- Social Media Management: Support with the growth of other organisation's social media platforms

- Create engaging content, schedule posts, and interact with the online community to promote events, initiatives, and success stories.

Qualities/Attributes

- Outstanding ability to conceptualise and execute trending content.

- Basic video editing skills and familiarity with mobile content tools.

Your Role

As a Social Media & Digital Marketing Volunteer, your help will not only contribute to immediate outcomes such as increased event attendance and community engagement but also play a pivotal part in the organisation's larger mission of reducing loneliness among young adults and creating a lasting positive impact on their lives.

This is an unpaid role suitable for individuals seeking valuable experience in the non-profit sector, and looking for opportunities for skill development, networking, and making a meaningful contribution to the community.

Volunteer with us!

At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, so most of the care that we provide is funded through fundraising and through our shops.

To help us to continue to provide the care that we do, we are looking for fun and enthusiastic volunteers to join us in our Acorns charity shops. Our shops are exciting and dynamic, with no two days being the same. From our walk-in customers, to receiving donations, and everything in between!

As a Shop Volunteer with us, you will be:

• Engaging with customers
• Accepting and sorting donated stock
• Pricing donations for sale
• Working on the till

Acocks Green shop is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 9.30am to 4.30pm. You can volunteer the hours that suit you, but it would be great if you could support in the shop for at least 3 hours a week.

We are currently unable to accept any Duke of Edinburgh participants or individuals under the age of 18 at this time.
