Join the small, diverse and friendly team of an independent advocacy charity in Lewisham as Treasurer of the Board of Trustees. We are a rights-based organisation and support people with learning disabilities to speak up and get their voices heard. 

Lewisham Speaking Up is an inclusive organisation that work in partnership with the people who need our support. Our beneficiaries are included at all levels of the organisation, from being Board members to being paid staff as well as being beneficiaries of our services.

Our services are split into two areas:

• self-advocacy 

• 1-2-1 advocacy 

We all work together towards our vision for a society where people with learning disabilities are listened to, recognised, respected and included in all decisions about their lives. We are looking for trustees who are committed to helping the organisation achieve this. 

Responsibilities:

• Provide strategic financial leadership, overseeing budgets, fundraising, and financial planning. 

• Ensure accurate financial records, compliance, and robust governance, including risk management and auditor liaison. 

• Actively participate in Board meetings, contributing to governance and strategy. 

Essential Skills:

• A qualified accountant (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with experience in financial management and clear communication. 

• An awareness of, or willingness to learn about, issues facing people with learning disabilities and a commitment to supporting them 

• The ability to explain complex technical financial data to other trustees who have a learning disability and those with no financial background. 

• Availability for regular Board meetings (online via Zoom) 

Desirable Skills: 

• Experience in charity finance 

• Experience as a Trustee, grant funding knowledge, proficiency in accounting software (e.g. QuickBooks),

• Proficiency in budgeting, cash flow monitoring and evaluating the financial viability of strategic plans.

Commitment: 

Available for online Board (1.5 hrs) and online Finance Subcommittee (1 hr) meetings, both happen 5 times a year. 

Attending in-person Board and staff Away Day (usually a Saturday in July), and the in-person Annual General Meeting (AGM) during November/December. 

Local candidates preferred (Southeast London based).

Volunteer Admin Support

Across the UK, our local branches help disabled people live the lives they choose. Every year, our skilled volunteers respond to thousands of requests, designing and creating bespoke equipment free of charge.

As a local admin support volunteer you are the lynchpin of our local branch activities. You will often be the first point of contact, ensure useful information is circulated to other members and help us make sure we keep all the data and details we need up to date.

What the role involves

This is a varied role that each branch tends to do a bit differently, but it will involve:

• Keeping records and data up to date and taking notes at meetings

• Preparing mail-outs

• Answering enquiries

• Accessing the branch REMAP and Portal accounts

• Booking venues for meetings

• Ensuring branch members are aware of current agreements/activities

We can support you to develop the skills you need for this role, and there’s an induction that covers all the areas above. You’ll also have chance to discuss your role and any additional needs with us.

What you’ll need for this role

• Confident using Microsoft Office, the internet and email

• Comfortable organising the administration of a group

• Able to follow REMAP policies and procedures

• Able to understand and apply our risk management system

• Able to apply disability, equality, and inclusion practices

• Able to keep people’s personal details safe

• Able to keep people’s personal details safe

• Willing to follow Remap policies and procedures and a commitment to our aims and values

You’ll also need to complete the induction checklist and some online training.

Where will I volunteer?

This role is largely home based, but it varies from branch to branch – some branches hold in-person meetings once a month or so, and their volunteers tend to be based in the area the branch covers.

If it works better for you, however, there’s a possibility this role could be done remotely.

Time commitment

This also varies, but it’s generally around 1-3 hours a week.

As a Swim Buddy you will be joining the people we support in the water, helping them have fun and encouraging them to swim and play in the pool.

One of our Support Workers will always be there for guidance and they will be responsible for the personal care of your buddy, but they may stay on the side during the time you're in the water.

• Provide general maintenance of our gardens

• Watering, planting, weeding and pruning

• Maintaining flower beds

• Creating/improving/maintaining our sensory garden spaces

Looking for an organised, reliable team-player to help coordinate our various events throughout the year. They should be confident in reaching out to prospective vendors and suppliers and be able to work with minimal supervision to achieve a set working outcome. 

What will you be doing?

Event Planning & Coordination

• Support the planning, organisation, and delivery of fundraising and community events from concept to completion.
• Coordinate with venues, suppliers, volunteers, and partners to ensure all event requirements are met.
• Manage event registrations, attendee communications, and on-the-day logistics.
• Attend regular planning meetings and contribute ideas for new fundraising and engagement opportunities.

Volunteer & Stakeholder Engagement

• Recruit, brief, and support event volunteers, ensuring they are well-prepared and motivated.
• Provide excellent supporter care to event participants and guests, responding to enquiries and ensuring a positive experience.

Marketing & Promotion

• Work with the Communications & Marketing team to promote events via social media, newsletters, and other channels.
• Assist in the production of event materials and collateral.

Risk Management & Compliance

• Undertake risk assessments for events, ensuring health, safety, and safeguarding standards are met.
• Ensure all events comply with relevant fundraising regulations, data protection, and charity policies.

Monitoring & Reporting

• Collect and record data on event participation, income, and feedback.
• Support post-event evaluation, preparing reports and suggesting improvements for future events.

What are we looking for?

• Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
• The volunteer should have good administration and project management skills to be able to help organise multiple events throughout the year and assist the Team Lead in managing multiple event organisation simultaneously.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to work collaboratively with volunteers, staff, and external partners.
• Creative, proactive, and detail-oriented, with a positive and flexible approach.
• Comfortable working independently and as part of a remote team.
• Lived experience of AuDHD or neurodivergence (desirable).
