Chair of Trustees and Trustees

The Genie’s Wish is looking for a new Chair of Trustees and two Trustees to help guide the charity through its next stage of development based in Nantwich, Cheshire.

About The Genie’s Wish

Established in 2021, The Genie’s Wish grants life-changing wishes and creates unforgettable experiences for children, young people and young adults aged 0 to 40 who are living with a serious or life-limiting condition.

We also support young carers aged 5 to 18, recognising the resilience and selflessness they show in caring for a loved one.

Our work brings joy, hope and a sense of possibility during some of life’s toughest moments. By supporting young adults and young carers who are often overlooked by traditional wish provision, we fill an important gap and create a lasting impact for individuals and families across England and Wales.

The opportunity

As a member of the Board, you will share responsibility for the charity’s governance, strategic direction and effective management.

You will work collaboratively with fellow trustees and the charity’s Co-Founders, using your experience and independent judgement to support effective decision-making and help safeguard the charity’s future.

Chair of Trustees

The Chair will provide inclusive and effective leadership to the Board, helping trustees work well together and ensuring meetings, decisions and governance arrangements remain focused on the charity’s purpose and beneficiaries.

We are particularly interested in someone with previous board, governance or senior leadership experience who can:

• Lead constructive and well-informed Board discussions
• Build strong working relationships with trustees and the Co-Founders
• Support effective oversight, accountability and strategic planning
• Act as an ambassador for The Genie’s Wish and its values

Trustees

The two new Trustees will help broaden the Board’s knowledge, networks and perspective.

We would particularly welcome applicants with professional experience in one or more of the following areas, but is not essential:

• Law
• Accountancy, finance or audit
• Media, communications, marketing or public relations
• Business, enterprise or organisational growth

Previous trustee experience is welcome but is not essential. We are equally interested in people who can bring relevant professional expertise, thoughtful challenge and a genuine commitment to the charity’s work.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure the charity complies with its governing document, charity law and other relevant legislation and regulations
• Keep the charity focused on its objectives and ensure its resources are used appropriately
• Contribute to strategy, policy, goal setting and the review of organisational performance
• Help ensure the charity is effectively administered and remains financially stable
• Safeguard the charity’s reputation, values and confidential information
• Declare and appropriately manage any actual or potential conflicts of interest
• Use your skills and experience to scrutinise information, contribute to discussions and guide new initiatives
• Represent and promote the charity at meetings, events and within your professional networks where appropriate

Commitment and appointment

Trustees are expected to attend at least 75% of trustee meetings each year, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Appointments are for a term of up to three years and may be renewed for a further term.

These are voluntary, unpaid positions. Reasonable expenses may be reimbursed in line with the charity’s procedures.

Successful applicants must be eligible to act as a charity trustee. They will also be expected to follow the Trustee Code of Conduct, maintain confidentiality and complete a Declaration of Interests.

Role Purpose:

Trustees provide strategic leadership, ensuring that St. George's Crypt fulfils its charitable objectives, makes a postive impact in the Leeds community, and remains financially sustainable. Trustees act collectively to safeguard the charity's values, reputation, and long-term effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities:

Governance & Strategic Leadership

• set and review the charity's strategic direction in alignment with its mission to support homeless and vulnerable individuals in Leeds
• ensure that all activiites deliver public benefit and comply with charity law, the governing document, and regulatory expectations
• monitor risks and ensure that robust governance structures are in place
• support and review the work of the Head of Finance and finance team
• oversee the external audit process, from appointment of auditors to implementation of any recommendations

Financial Oversight:

• oversee financial performance, ensuring funds are used responsibly and transparently in line with donor expectations and regulatory requirements
• review budgets, annual accounts, and financial policies, ensuring sustainability of services such as emergency shelter, addiction recovery programmes and meal supervision
• ensure effective oversight of the Crypt's financial affairs and its financial viability

Support for Senior Leadership

• provide guidance and constructive challenge to the CEO and Senior Leadership Team
• ensure leadership decisions reflect the charity's values and strategic propositions

Advocacy & Representation

• act as an ambassador for St. George's Crypt within Leeds and beyond, promoting awareness of its services and impact
• represent the charity's values of compassion, dignity and hope 

Compliance & Accountability

• ensure the charity meets all legal and regulatory obligations, including those set by the Charity Commission
• uphold confidentiality, ethics, and good governance practice at all times
• ensure the Crypt fulfils its mission and values, taking advantage of new opportunities and navigating challenges and managing risks appropriately
• ensure the Crypt has sound financial policies, controls and governance in place, and complies with these

Monitoring Impact

• evaluate the effectiveness of programmes such as residential support, training opportunities, and health and wellbeing initiatives
• ensure all services remain responsive to the needs of homeless and vulnerable people in Leeds
• give clear strategic direction, setting overall policy and goals, and monitoring progress and impact
• understand the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) and provide guidance on accounting and financial reporting for the charity

Your role is to support the Corporate Relations Manager at the Baytree Centre in developing and maintaining corporate partnerships. This includes conducting prospect research, assisting with engagement activities, and supporting the delivery of corporate volunteering days to ensure companies remain connected to Baytree’s mission and values.

This includes Her Space (Spark) for girls in school year 10 and above, Future Me (Jr Spark) for girls in years 8–9, and Step into Secondary (Sparklers) for girls in year 7. This involves co-facilitating weekly workshops that embed essential life skills and promote Baytree’s five Character Development traits: Resilience, Self Control, Fairness, Purpose, and Good Judgement. You will contribute to creating a welcoming, inclusive environment where girls can explore important topics, build confidence, and develop the skills they need to thrive.

Main responsibilities:

- Contribute to the development and maintenance of a library of reusable, age-appropriate session plans.

- Engage with girls to incorporate their interests and ideas into session content.

- Assist in the delivery of group sessions, workshops, and activities.

- Research and source materials and resources to enhance session quality.

The Refugee Council is the nation’s refugee charity. Together with community groups, partners and volunteers, we help people who have escaped war and persecution to rebuild their lives, integrate into communities, and play their part in Britain. About the Role

As a Volunteer, you will support with several aspects of the Childhood First Partnership. This will include the administration of the Community of Practice, which will launch to age dispute practitioners in late 2026. You will also support with communications for the Partnership, such as newsletters. Finally, you will be involved with the activities of the Youth Support Collective, such as supporting with co-production projects and facilitating ice-breaker activities in sessions if you wish.

You will work under the supervision of the Childhood First Partnership Officer, and also the Partnership Manager. This volunteering role would suit someone who has an interest in working with young people, learning about the asylum system, and developing workplace and administrative skills.

Hours: 4 hours per week - any day, Monday to Friday.

How we support our Volunteers

Volunteers are valued members of our teams, and we provide them with support and development opportunities. Volunteers will receive regular planned support sessions with their supervisors.

Refugee Council allows volunteers to attend our professional training courses when needed for the role, free of charge. Training will be discussed with you during support sessions with your supervisor.

Volunteers will be given an IT account, a Refugee Council email address, access to our Hub and online courses whilst volunteering with us. Equipment will be provided as and when needed for the role.

Through sponsorship from the Marsh Charitable Trust, Refugee Council also provides volunteers with the opportunity to design and set-up a new service for new clients. There will be an opportunity to discuss this with your supervisor.

Volunteer roles are unpaid, but we will reimburse volunteers for lunch and travel costs according to our expense policy. Unfortunately, our limited budget only allows for local travelling costs.

Working under the guidance of the class teacher, you will reinforce lesson content, help students build confidence, and contribute to an inclusive and positive learning environment for adult learners from diverse backgrounds.

- Work alongside the teaching team to support ESOL and Literacy classes.

- Provide one-to-one assistance to students who require extra support, following the teacher’s delivery.

- Reinforce learning activities and encourage student participation.

Purpose of the Role:

To support the delivery of engaging and inclusive English conversation sessions at the Baytree Centre, helping adult participants practise speaking English in a relaxed group setting. By offering encouragement, guidance, and a welcoming environment, the role empowers participants to improve their language skills, build confidence, and make meaningful social connections.

Main Responsibilities:

- Facilitate group discussions, encouraging participation and peer interaction.

- Provide one-to-one support to participants, helping with pronunciation, vocabulary, and conversational skills.

- Create a supportive and inclusive environment where participants feel comfortable practicing English and asking questions.

- Encourage connections and engagement between participants.

- Collect feedback to help improve future sessions.

- Adhere to Baytree Centre policies and safeguarding procedures.

By engaging in one-to-one interactions and creating a welcoming environment, the role contributes to the social inclusion and well-being of participants from diverse backgrounds.

Main Responsibilities:

- Provide tailored one-to-one support to ESOL students, focusing on conversation skills and knowledge of life in the UK.

- Share insights about cultural aspects and community resources to support integration.

- Create a friendly and supportive atmosphere that reduces feelings of isolation.

- Offer basic information and assistance to help access services and navigate resources.

- Maintain consistent attendance and communication with the paired student.

- Adhere to Baytree Centre policies and procedures.

Skills and Qualities Required:

- Sufficient English to engage effectively in one-to-one conversations.

- Empathy, patience, and cultural sensitivity.

- Good interpersonal and listening skills.

- Flexible and adaptable to varying schedules and needs.

Commitment:

- 1 hour per week, Monday to Thursday between 9am and 3pm (exact day and time subject to each person’s availability).

As a Community Outreach Volunteer, you’ll play a vital role in helping people in the local community know where to turn when they need urgent mental health support. You’ll be out and about in the community spreading the word about the our service — chatting to local people, connecting with community centres, faith groups and local organisations, and sharing information through leaflets and posters. 

What you will be doing

• Promoting the Crisis Café within the local community
• Visiting community centres, libraries, GP surgeries, faith settings and other local spaces
• Handing out leaflets and displaying posters
• Helping build positive relationships with local organisations and community groups
• Feeding back any insights, questions or community needs to the team

The skills you need

• Friendly, approachable and confident talking to new people
• An interest in mental health, wellbeing and community support
• Good communication skills and a respectful, non judgemental approach
