As a member of the GACD Board of Trustees, you will provide strategic leadership and oversight for GACD as it seeks to fulfil its charitable objects. You will ensure GACD operates in accordance with its governing document and meets its legal and regulatory requirements. The role is voluntary, and trustees do not receive any renumeration for their contribution to the governance of GACD.
The appointment will commence in December 2025/January 2026 for a three-year term, in the first instance.
Why the role is important to us
Our trustees are jointly and severally responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of GACD, its financial health, integrity of its activities, and for setting and overseeing the delivery of the organisation’s aims and objectives. The Charity Commission’s Guidance ‘The essential trustee: what you need to know, what you need to do’ identifies the main duties of a trustee as to:
- Ensure the charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit
- Comply with the charity’s governing document and meets its legal and regulatory requirements
- Act in the charity’s best interests
- Manage the charity’s resources responsibly
- Act with reasonable care and skill
- Ensure the charity is accountable
- Reduce the risk of liability.
What you will bring to the Board
The current Board members would particularly wish to seek a new trustee that offers experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Prior governance experience, ideally in a charity context (essential)
- Leadership or senior management experience within the charity sector and familiarity with UK charity regulation, legislation and operations (essential)
- Applied health/medical research, or health research funding.
- Communication strategies to enhance profile and impact.
- Links to relevant networks and potential stakeholder organisations in chronic diseases.
What you will do
As a GACD trustee, you will:
- Ensure that GACD has a clear strategy and that the goals are in line with GACD’s charitable objects.
- Ensure GACD functions within all applicable legal and regulatory requirements and in line with its governing document, continually striving for best practice in governance.
- Promote and develop GACD in order for it to grow and maintain its global public benefit (or to recognise the situation when it may be more appropriate to wind the charity up where there is no longer a need to provide the services it does or because the charitable objects are no longer relevant to contemporary social situations).
- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of GACD and its resources in pursuit of its objects, striving for best practice in governance.
- Ensure that key risks are identified, monitored, and mitigated effectively.
- Take appropriate professional advice in all matters where there may be a material risk to GACD, or where the trustees may be in breach of their duties.
- Provide strategic oversight, support and challenge to the Chief Executive.
- Ensure the GACD has the proper arrangements in place for the appointment, supervision, support, appraisal and remuneration of the Chief Executive.
- Safeguard the good name and values of GACD.
About you
You possess:
- A willingness to commit to GACD and to devote the necessary time and effort (approximately four days annually, including scrutinising papers and meeting preparation time). Trustees are expected to attend all Board meetings.
- Leadership and senior management experience with an ability to carry the confidence of colleagues.
- An ability to be strategic and forward-looking in relation to the charity’s objects and aims.
- Sound, independent judgment and a willingness to speak your mind, contributing to discussions.
- An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship and adhering to recognised principles of public life that include selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness and honesty and leadership.
- Good communication, interpersonal, team working and decision-making skills and the ability to respect confidentiality to work effectively as a member of the Board.
- A commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Disqualification
Trustees must not be disqualified from acting as a trustee. You must not:
- Have an unspent conviction for an offence involving deception or dishonesty (such as fraud).
- Be bankrupt or have entered into a formal arrangement (e.g. an Individual Voluntary Arrangement).
- Have been removed as a charity trustee because of wrongdoing.
- Have an unspent conviction for:
- Specified terrorism offences
- A specified money laundering offence
- The offence of contravening a Charity Commission Order or Direction
- Offences of misconduct in public office, perjury, or perverting the course of justice
- For aiding, attempting or abetting the above offences.
- Be on the sex offenders register.
- Have an unspent sanction for contempt of Court.
- Have disobeyed a Commission Order.
- Be a designated person (under specific anti-terrorist legislation).

About us:
The Refugee and Migrant Forum of Essex and London (RAMFEL) is one of the largest immigration and asylum advice charities in the UK, supporting refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants to access justice. An OISC level 3 accredited organisation, we represent clients at all stages of the immigration and asylum process, up to and including the Upper Tribunal of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber.
We also actively campaign for a fairer and more humane immigration system. RAMFEL caseworkers therefore have the opportunity to work on systemic and strategic challenges and support broader advocacy work.

Purpose of the role:
Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that the Refugee and Migrant Forum of Essex and London (RAMFEL) achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that RAMFEL has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the CEO and senior management to enable us to grow and thrive, and through this, achieve our mission.
Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.
Duties:
- Support and provide advice on RAMFEL’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
- Review and approve organisation strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their effective and efficient implementation.
- Oversee RAMFEL’s financial plans, budgets, and statements, and monitor and evaluate progress
- Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
- Provide support and challenge to RAMFEL’s management team in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
- Keep abreast of changes in RAMFEL’s operating environment.
- Contribute to regular reviews of RAMFEL’s own governance.
- Contribute to the broader promotion of RAMFEL’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.
As a small charity, there will be times when trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings and sub-committees. This may involve providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, reviewing or advising on operational documents (e.g. operational and business plans, new team structures, outreach and engagement events) or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.
What we are looking for
We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board. We are furthermore particularly looking for those who can contribute one or more of the following:
- Migrants or refugees, who have lived experience of the impact of immigration policy and practice
- Expertise in RAMFEL’s core service delivery, especially regarding advice, immigration or legal services
- Networking and fundraising ability
- Experience of campaigning and/or external communications
- Organisational and administrative skills
Previous governance experience is desirable but not essential and we will provide a full induction to the organisation and the workings of the Board.
This is a fully voluntary and unpaid position. Reasonable expenses will be reimbursement.

We are The Unseen Barriers Foundation – a new, disabled-led Scottish charity (status pending) tackling the invisible causes of exclusion. Shame, sensory overload, emotional exhaustion, disbelief. These are the things that stop people from showing up — to appointments, to events, to life.
The Foundation is built around two original lived experience contributions by our founder:
The Unseen Barriers Framework — a landmark conceptual model naming the distress-based barriers that keep disabled people locked out of support
Cùran — a green plush dragon created as a visual anchor for distress, shutdown, and solidarity
Both are licensed to the Foundation by the creator to ensure they serve a purpose-first, rights-based mission.
We are now looking for trustees to help shape this work from the ground up. This is a working board — not a figurehead role. Trustees will actively contribute to strategic direction, governance, and growth.
We are currently remote-first to ensure full accessibility, but will provide office space (Edinburgh/Glasgow area) once funded. You do not need to be based in either city.

We are working in partnership with Edmund Sawyer Almshouse, a charity first established in the 17th Century for six women in need in Kettering. The building is Grade 11 star listed. It is reputed to be the oldest building in Kettering. The charity had fallen into poor condition in 2018, and the board of the Leonard Hackett Memorial Trust stepped in and took over the charity and rescued the buildings carrying out immediate refurbishment.

Person Specification:
We are seeking board members with a passion for the mission, vision and values of Breaking Barriers, and a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. We strongly encourage applications from individuals with lived experience which we define as people from a refugee background, with first hand experience of seeking sanctuary or migration to the UK.
In addition, we actively seek candidates who bring any of the following:
- Prior fundraising expertise: focusing on corporate and high-end individual funding to generate leads, ability to contribute to active fundraising efforts, introductions to relevant networks and relationships
- Leadership experience at a senior level within corporate organisations and a commitment to actively making introductions to relevant networks and contacts
- Refugee/forced migration sector experience: leading or developing initiatives/programmes in areas relevant to the mission, such as employability or recruitment

As a trustee, you’ll join the board of a not-for-profit or charitable organisation, helping to guide its strategy, ensure financial sustainability, and uphold its purpose. You will work collaboratively with fellow trustees and staff to ensure the charity is well-run, legally compliant, and delivering real results in line with its mission.
Key responsibilities include:
- Setting and monitoring the strategic direction of the charity
- Overseeing financial planning, risk management, and governance
- Supporting and constructively challenging senior staff or volunteers

The commitment from you...
Your passion, experience, knowledge (and time).We ask our trustees to commit to a monthly virtual meeting (approx. 1.5 hours), along with a few hours per month to support the staff team and deliver strategic goals. What will you be doing?
Our trustees play an important role in making sure that the charity is run in the interests of the children, young people and families we support. They strategically oversee the management and administration of the organisation.
