Shannon Trust fulfils an unmet need around adult learning, supporting people who’ve fallen through the cracks in formal education.
We know a lot of people have had negative learning experiences in the past, so our programme is designed to be different, with no exams and no classrooms. Our unique, evidence-based Turning Pages reading manuals are used by thousands of learners in prisons and the community to improve reading skills.
Prison volunteers live near to their local prison so that they can visit about once a month during the working week to nurture the growth of the Shannon Trust in their prison. They help unlock the power of reading by offering advice, guidance, training and support to prison staff and prisoner mentors who help other prisoners to improve their skills 1 to 1.
We are looking for volunteers who are able to work alone, able to give a regular, reliable commitment for ideally two years and able to deliver engaging training to groups of people in prisons. Due to the nature of the role, prison security vetting will be required.
We provide training for the role via e-learning and 4 training sessions which are a mix of live, online and group training.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

Worked as a senior fundraiser in a charity with a range of public fundraising methods, and are used to setting targets and reviewing the effectiveness of different streams of income.

We are looking for three new Trustees to join our UK Board. We are a small, award-winning charity who are actively shifting power to our Kenyan partner NGO. With three Trustees coming to the end of their term this year we are looking for skilled, enthusiast, committed individuals who are passionate about what we do, to become part of our Trustee team.
We are specifically looking for the following roles on our Board;
- Chair of Trustees
- Secretary to Board
- Someone who has experience in either corporate networking, partnership development, mental health and wellbeing, HR or in technical vocational training and entrepreneurship/business skills training.
Passion for our work is our number one recruitment factor though so please do get in touch if you have other skills to offer.
We are in Year 2 of our 5 year Strategic Plan, where the focus is on shifting the decision making power to our partner NGO in Kenya. Ultimately our long-term goal is to not be needed, but we realise the funding landscape is a long way off that at the moment.
As one of our Trustees you'll be part of an award-winning small charity who is leading the way in ethical development, primarily by actively shifting power and decision making to our incredible partner NGO in Kenya. We're a small charity but we definitely have a big impact and want to share our learning and knowledge with other NGOs who want to follow the same path of shifting power. Cats Protection is the UK’s leading feline welfare charity and our vision is a world where every cat is treated with kindness and an understanding of its needs.
Cats are at the centre of everything we do and our objectives are: homing, neutering and educating people about cats and their care.
We help thousands of cats across the UK each year thanks to our network of dedicated volunteers, staff and supporters.
A bit about this role
Thousands of cats each year rely on the help of animal charities because they have been abandoned, they have strayed or because there has been a change in their owner’s circumstances. Becoming an administration volunteer is just one way you can help improve the lives of cats in your local community. Our admin volunteers help provide vital admin support to our volunteer groups and teams across Cats Protection. They help keep up to date records of the number of cats that have been rehomed, collate supporter details and send out newsletters. This could be the perfect volunteer role if you have administrative experience, a passion for cats, or both!
What can you expect to be doing?
- Recording relevant information related to your volunteer group
- Signposting enquiries to the relevant teams within Cats Protection
- Sending information to supporters, volunteers and to our National Cat Centre
- Distributing information leaflets if required
What are the benefits to you and the cats?
You will develop new skills, expand your knowledge and make a significant contribution to improving the lives of cats and kittens by providing valuable administrative support to your local volunteer group. You will also meet new people, make new friends and be part of a dedicated team of volunteers.
We’re looking for someone with
- Administrative and organisational skills
- Willingness to be part of a team
- Previous experience in office administration (would be an advantage)
Time expectation
Our administration volunteers usually spend 2 to 3 hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.
Support, guidance and keeping you safe
At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.
The wellbeing of our people is important and at Cats Protection we are committed to safeguarding children, adults at risk and all those that we come into contact with as part of our activities.

Do you have a passion for organising social groups and meeting new people? Want a flexible voluntary role that allows you to make a difference to peoples’ lives? Then read on!
NWR is a membership organisation for women that has been bringing women together for over 60 years. We have over 300 groups across the country who meet for informal chats and discussions. Women of all ages are welcome to join.
What will you do?
Following the success of the new groups in Hertfordshire, we are recruiting volunteers across the country to set up new NWR groups in their area. These NWR groups will meet monthly in a local pub or bar with a set theme – this theme acts as an icebreaker and ensures that no two meetings feel the same! Themes could cover a wide range of topics and are designed to be light-hearted and an opener for conversations that could lead anywhere (and usually do!).
We hear from many members about how much joy NWR membership has brought to their lives; the friendships forged, companionship and wide-ranging conversations held. We want to reach more women to give them this opportunity.
Your role would be to run the group: promote it, schedule and run the meetings and respond to enquiries.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for volunteers who enjoy meeting and talking to new people, are familiar with using social media and have excellent administration and IT skills. In a nutshell, we’re looking for a “people person” who is comfortable with a spreadsheet and social media!
What will we provide?
We will provide training and support from staff who have experience of setting up and running a group as well as templates and promotional material for you to use. You would also be part of a friendly network of other volunteers.
The amount of time spent on the role will vary from week to week. It is estimated that the role will require 5-10 hours a month, which includes time spent at your meetings.
We are seeking a Company Secretary who can use their skills and capabilities to assist the Board to operate efficiently and effectively. You will also help the charity to continue providing vital support to those who need it.
What will you be doing?
This role is for someone who is organised and methodical, with an eye for detail. You will take minutes at Board meetings and make sure the charity follows company law. You will also participate fully in Board meetings and play an important part in the strategic direction of the charity.
Together the Trustees are collectively responsible for the governance and management of the Charity, including regulatory compliance. However, the Company Secretary is expected to lead on all aspects of the charities adherence to legal and regulatory requirements, that includes submission of documentation to the appropriate body.
This includes being able to present and explain any requirements to other Trustees, to aid the Board’s understanding and ability to jointly make decisions about changes to the charities governance matters.
For full role description please see candidate pack attached.
What are we looking for?

- Experience in one of the following: Legal, Office & Administration Management or Governance.
- A strong affinity with the vision and values of Top Church Training.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Integrity and sound judgement.
- Able and willing to work collaboratively with others.
We welcome candidates of all backgrounds, identities and experiences. We would like to diversify our Board in order to strengthen our governance and better represent the demographics of those who use our services.
What difference will you make?
This is an exciting time to join us as we are looking to develop the existing Board and our policies and procedures around our governance. The long term goal is to expand the Board by bringing on people with new skills, experience and backgrounds.
As Company Secretary you will play a key supporting role in helping us achieve this goal, and will use your skills and capabilities to assist the Board to operate efficiently and effectively. You will also help the charity to continue providing vital support to those who need it.
Reach TrusteeWorks are supporting us with our Board recruitment.
