Overview of the Branch Trustee opportunity
We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate person who could devote the time to volunteer with us as one of our Trustees. As a Trustee of the Branch, you will have the chance to influence how we care for and prevent cruelty to animals and drive the implementation of key initiatives. You will serve on the governing body of the charity and be instrumental in the running of the Branch and setting out both the short and long terms aims.
As a minimum, trustees would normally be expected to attend a monthly committee meeting lasting some 2 to 3 hours. However, the commitment may vary depending on whether or not the trustee takes on additional duties.

The RSPCA Stort Valley Branch
The Stort Valley Branch is one of the branches of RSPCA, but we are also a separately registered charity looking after animals in our local area. Much of the animal welfare work of RSPCA is carried out through local branches, which are run by volunteers who have the support of the National Society of RSPCA. The Branch have a veterinary clinic in Harlow and a charity shop in Bishop’s Stortford.
Primary responsibilities of the Branch Trustee
- Appreciate and support the aims and policies of the RSPCA.
- Work in conjunction with fellow trustees and branch officers and jointly act in making decisions for the best interest of the branch and the RSPCA.
- Work with national RSPCA staff to ensure that the branch meets all minimum animal welfare
- standards (MAWS).
- In conjunction with your fellow trustees and Branch Support Specialist write, adopt, monitor, and review a development plan setting out the short and long term aims of your branch.
- Actively participate in branch committee meetings and to attend the branch annual general meeting and regional conference.
- Be aware of the outcome of regional board meetings and support local initiatives.
- Actively promote and advertise the society in an ongoing programme to recruit new branch trustees and volunteers and welcome new members.
- In conjunction with your fellow trustees, ensure the proper management and control of all activities and decisions relating to any premises held or staff employed by the branch if applicable.
What we are looking for in a volunteer:
We are looking for people from all social and cultural backgrounds, with experience and skills in any of the following areas:
- Marketing communication including social media, PR, website;
- Fundraising including corporate fundraising, trust fund and grant applications;
- Local community and supporter relationships;
- Hands-on experience in growing charities; and/or
- Are or have been part of the groups and communities we would like to attract.
Alongside the relevant experience, we are looking for someone who is committed to the RSPCA’s charitable objectives and shares our passion for animal welfare. You would be creative, innovative, bring a fresh perspective, and can put ideas into action.
What we can offer you as a volunteer Branch Trustee
- We will provide you with a comprehensive trustee training course which will provide you will everything you need to carry out the role.
- Ongoing support is also provided by local and national RSPCA staff in addition to any additional training provided by the relevant branch.
- The platform to utilise your skills and experience to oversee the charity and make decisions that have a direct impact on local animal welfare.
- The opportunity to gain new skills and develop existing ones, whilst making a real difference to the lives of animals.
- A way to expand your professional and personal network through working with like-minded people.
Practical considerations
- Please also note that to become a Trustee, you will need to be aged 18 or over and a member of our branch for three months before you are eligible to be elected.
- Trustees are elected for a 12-month term each year.
- Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
- Trustees must sign a Trustee Declaration of Willingness to Act to clarify that they are not disqualified from being a trustee and read the Charity Commission’s guidance for individuals on who can’t be a trustee or senior manager of a charity.

Overview of the Branch Treasurer opportunity

The RSPCA Stort Valley Branch
The Stort Valley Branch is one of the branches of RSPCA, but we are also a separately registered charity looking after animals in our local area. Much of the animal welfare work of RSPCA is carried out through local branches, which are run by volunteers who have the support of the National Society of RSPCA. As well as our animal welfare advice centre, we have a charity shop in Bishops Stortford, who through the sales of donated items, provides income for us to help more animals in the local community.
Primary responsibilities of the Branch Treasurer
- Implement and maintain sound financial systems.
- Take a lead role in ensuring the committee set annual financial budgets and plan the branch income and expenditure.
- Provide a written financial report for every branch meeting.
- Liaise with auditors/independent examiners regarding the production of the annual branch accounts and the treasurer’s report.
- Maintain control of all bank accounts as authorised by the committee.
- Execute and operate branch committee financial decisions and act as branch co-signatory.
- Maintain control over all branch paying-in books and receipt books and to ensure their correct use.
- In the absence of a branch box secretary, to assume responsibility for the branch network of collection boxes.
- Arrange payment of the annual branch contribution to the appropriate RSPCA fund.
- Coordinate financial control of all branch fundraising activities.
- Make quarterly VAT returns to headquarters promptly.
- Ensure the production, monitoring and annual review of the branch’s financial risk management strategy in accordance with the charity commission’s requirements.
- Liaise with branch officers, branch support specialist and Branch finance co-ordinator on - - - Financial affairs as necessary and alert them immediately to any possible difficulties or irregularities.
- Ensure the retention and safekeeping of all branch financial documentation for the appropriate time as set by the charity commission.

What we are looking for in a volunteer:
We are particularly looking for someone who has knowledge and experience in finance, who may already understand charity finance. As a trustee, you would be able to dedicate the time to attend monthly committee meetings, which last approximately 3 hours. In between meetings, there will be additional volunteer duties such as; providing financial reports at committee meetings, monitoring the budget which has been set by the trustees for the year, processing payments, querying invoices, doing VAT returns, and processing Gift Aid claims.

- Ensure that all committee members are familiar with branch rules, national Society policy and their responsibilities as a charity trustee.
- Be instrumental in the production, monitoring and review of a branch development plan.
- Actively coordinate the activities of the branch, including the delegation of tasks.
- Ensure that a branch representative is appointed to the regional board and that the representative gives the committee a full report on the business conducted after each meeting.
- To ensure that all the essential roles within the committee are filled by suitable, appropriate trustees or volunteers.

What we are looking for in a volunteer:
Ideally, you would have specific skills such as finance, legal, fundraising, project management, business experience, awareness of employment and/or charity legislation. These all can be useful to help ensure we have a sound and robust business model and long-term strategic development plan, however, they are not essential.
We are also looking for people who are creative, innovative, who have experience of or are part of the groups and communities we want to attract, who can bring new ideas, different experiences and fresh perspectives to the Board and help put those ideas into action.
You will need to be able to work with people and have good interpersonal skills. You do not need to be an expert, although commitment, common sense, and the ability to be objective are vital.

As Community Outreach Lead you will be at the heart of our activities with the local community. Identifying how we can connect with local residents and businesses, understanding what local Inspectors need and working with your fellow Trustees to turn that into actions that can make a real difference.
Your responsibilities would include:
- Acting as the primary contact point for all branch connections with the local community residents, businesses, vets, RSPCA Inspectors, retailers, other charities or welfare providers, and anyone involved with animals
- Building connections and partnerships within the community to improve animal welfare programs or increase fundraising
- Liaising with the RSPCA Inspectors to truly understand what they need and how we can help them
- Identifying the biggest animal welfare issues in the local area and developing plans to address these
- Being the face of the Branch in the local community, well known among volunteers and our partners, representing the Branch and the RSPCA

As a Trustee you will be a full and equal member of our leadership team. Deciding what to do, how we raise and spend money, organising events, working as a team to help animals within our region.
WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?
Trustees manage the RSPCA Middlesbrough, South Tees & District Branch charity. Like any company we get involved in finance, people and legal topics, making strategies and monitoring our progress. More importantly, we focus on raising funds, managing volunteers and spending money where it is needed to support animals in our region - YOUR region. As Branch Secretary you would be the backbone of our team. Making sure things run smoothly, that we stay compliant, that everyone is organised and our members are kept informed. Your responsibilities would include:
- Acting as the primary contact point for all branch communications with member and the national RSPCA organisation
- Arranging branch meetings and AGM, ensure accurate records are kept and key deadlines are met (e.g. documents to be submitted to The Charity Commission)
- Being the responsible custodian of member information and managing communication with this important group

Read moreAs an animal fosterer, you would be supporting the RSPCA in providing either our cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, or other small furries with the safety of your home whilst tending to their welfare needs such as feeding and grooming. In addition to this, by providing a temporary loving environment, you will play a crucial role in their wellbeing and socialisation, which will significantly improve their chances of successful rehoming.
Once everything is in place, the animal center will guide you through the fostering process and ensure that you have all the necessary equipment, food, and veterinary care for your foster. The RSPCA is also happy to reimburse any other pre-agreed expenses that you may incur through volunteering for us.
Whilst our animals are in your foster care, you will:
- Provide them with care, suitable housing, and a safe environment as per our policies and guidelines.
- Feed, water, and groom them in line with our advice.
- Transport them to any veterinary appointments if required.
- Provide them with your time and patience.
- Help us spread the word about the animals in your care so they might find their forever home quicker.
- Playing and cuddles are also a must!
What we are looking for in a volunteer Fosterer
- Volunteers aged 18 or over who have had plenty of experience caring for animals.
- Fostering experience is beneficial but not essential as training is provided.
- For their wellbeing, the whole family should be on board with fostering an animal.
- Any existing pets or animals need to have been spayed/neutered (some medical reasons may mean they cannot be so, please let us know if this is the case).
- You will need to live in our branches area.

Our voluntary roles are subject to an informal interview and trial period. We will ask you to provide contact details for two referees, and dependent on the position, you may need to sign an agreement and undergo specific training before starting the role.

A bit about this role
Without the passionate and committed teams of volunteers across Cats Protection we wouldn’t be able to help the thousands of cats and kittens each year that rely on us for help. Our Cat Welfare Team Leaders have the important role of coordinating, encouraging and supporting teams of fosterer volunteers and cat care volunteers. They help make sure volunteers with direct cat care roles are happy and confident and provide advice and guidance when needed. This incredible teamwork means we are able to help more cats and kittens in need.
What can you expect to be doing?
- Volunteering alongside colleagues including the Branch Coordinator, Cat Welfare team, Branch Development Manager and Vet team to ensure that CP cat care policies, procedures and standards are applied in branch
- Support fosterers to follow Cats Protection cat welfare policies and procedures
- Acting as the main point of contact within the branch for cat welfare and ensuring that welfare updates are shared and implemented effectively
- Supporting the branch by ensuring that accurate and up to date records of all cats helped are maintained, using specified Cats Protection systems
- Attending relevant Cats Protection volunteer training sessions and encouraging other volunteers to do likewise
- With the other volunteers, recruit, induct and support all branch fosterers and cat care volunteers using Cats Protection processes
- Represent the branch at relevant meetings
- Play an active part in the branch committee, being part of the branch team leading on cat adoption information and updates
- Collaborating with the Cats Protection Cat Adoption Team Leader to ensure the highest standards of cat care are applied in line with Cats Protection policy and procedures

- The ability to handle sensitive issues with objectivity and pragmatism
- Committee volunteers need to be aged 18+
Time expectation
The time expectation for this role will vary depending on the number of volunteers and cats in care. Our Cat Welfare Team Leaders usually spend between 10 to 12 hours per week in this role which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.

Margaret Green Animal Rescue is the oldest and largest Dorset-based Animal Welfare Charity with Rescue & Rehoming Centres in Dorset and Devon. We have an inspirational team committed to providing the highest possible standards of animal care and we also have a number of Charity Shops located around Dorset, which generate income for the Charity.
We are now looking to expand our Board of Trustees (currently 5 trustees), strengthening the range of skills available to support the charity to achieve its objectives. - Marketing/PR (inc. Digital/charity), Fund Raising and Business Development particularly in the Charity Sector,

The Board of Trustees contribute their professional expertise and provide strategic direction, as well as governing and overseeing the Charity. The Chief Executive and experienced senior management team run the charity, its income generation and animal rescue/welfare activities.
We meet in Dorset and Devon on a pre-planned basis six times per year and occasionally on an ad-hoc basis and would prefer candidates to be based within our catchment area.
This is a key voluntary role working alongside a skilled and dedicated team within this highly respected, regional Animal Welfare Charity.
