Citrus Arts, a circus and outdoor arts organisation in Pontypridd in the South Wales valleys, is looking for new trustees to join our small yet mighty board.

We’re an arts charity with a vision of a flourishing creative community rooted in the ethos of the travelling circus 

Citrus’ mission is to use the hands-on skills of circus and outdoor arts life to nurture citizenship and kindness in our neighbourhood, and to ignite creativity, connecting our community to self, to each other and to the land through hosting spectacular shared experiences.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking new members to join our board and help us drive the company, ensuring that we work with determination and flair in everything we do.

We’re particularly interested in hearing from people who live in Hopkinstown or the local area, who are Welsh speakers and/ or who feel their lived experience is underrepresented in the arts or on charity boards.We are also interested in hearing from folks with experience in environmental sustainability, safeguarding, marketingor relationship building, staff management, data protection and/ or venue management. The most important thing, however, is that you are interested in the arts and have a desire and enthusiasm for helping our community and our young people to embrace creativity, citizenship and kindness.

A trustee is a person who takes care of the work of a charity, making sure it meets its charitable aims and carries out everything it does in a legal and professional way. Trustees have meetings every few months to check on, plan and discuss the work of the charity. Trustees do not get paid for being trustees, but they do get expenses for any travel etc.

Citrus’ board meetings are held around 4 times a year, usually on Zoom, and there are other Citrus creative events we love our board members to attend where possible. These can include screenings, gigs, performances, festival, workshops and much more. We aim to support our board with training and development needs as well as social opportunities. 

Currently, Citrus Arts has 4 trustees and we’re looking for 3 or 4 more.

Could you lead the local SSAFA services in your area? You don’t need a military background for this role, but you should be empathic to the needs of the armed forces community, have some experience of managing people and possess good I.T. skills. What is a Branch Chair?

There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas. Many are further divided into local areas called divisions. Each branch has a Chair to oversee all aspects of the branch. Ultimately accountable to the Chair of the Board of Trustees, through the National Chairman your role is to ensure that the branch is running in line with SSAFA’s Royal Charter Rules, Regulations, and policies. Also, to ensure that clients and volunteers are safe, all services provided are appropriate and effective and that the branch is financially sound. You will be the public face of SSAFA in your branch area.

Why do we need you?

We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan. More people than ever are contacting SSAFA for financial, practical and emotional support. To do this we need local branches and volunteers who can coordinate people, ensure the local population know about SSAFA and keep things running smoothly behind the scenes.

Our branches support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.

When would you be needed and where would you be based?

This role is about leadership, coordination, and administration. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. The role requires an ongoing time commitment, usually about 2-3 days per month. In addition, you would need to organise and attend regular meetings throughout the year.

What would you be doing?

• Providing leadership to the Branch and ensuring that all activities comply with SSAFA regulations both directly, and through the Branch Secretary, other Branch Officers, and Divisional Officers.
• Providing support and guidance to volunteers in office holder roles, and support with recruitment of volunteers into these positions to ensure the sustainability of the branch.
• Ensuring the financial integrity of the Branch, including the appointment of Treasurers and a local fundraising programme to meet branch running costs.
• Ensuring that all data is processed and held in accordance with SSAFA’s data management policies.
• Monitoring volunteer numbers against the demand for support and working with other volunteers, regional and central office staff to attract and recruit new volunteers as required.
• Ensuring that all volunteers are recruited, inducted, supported, and managed in line with SSAFA policies, such as the Volunteering Policy, Volunteer Code of Conduct, Data Protection Policy, and Safeguarding Policy.
• Building relationships with regional and central office staff, local voluntary organisations and, if applicable, SSAFA Service committees, local military establishments, prisons etc.
• Overseeing an appropriate programme of awareness raising so that potential clients, volunteers, and supporters know how to contact the branch.
• Providing timely reports and information to SSAFA’s Central Office
• Overseeing a programme of meetings including an AGM, branch meetings, committee meetings, training etc.
• Supporting any salaried branch staff and ensuring that their line management arrangements are working appropriately.
• Resolve any complaints that are suitable for local resolution in accordance with SSAFA’s Complaints Policy and procedures, referring upwards any that are not suitable for local resolution.

The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

What training and support would you receive?

• Role specific training to prepare you for your voluntary role – caseworker training, caseworker IT system training, volunteer management – attracting, recruiting, and inducting volunteers. 
• Mandatory on-line training modules to complete at home, so you are up to date on how to keep clients, their families safe and personal information safe.
• Local orientation as well as meet and greet sessions with key Central Office and regional teams.
• Access to a range additional e-learning courses as well as local opportunities for your personal and professional development.
• Support from Regional and central staff and peer support from fellow Chairs in neighbouring branches.
• Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses
• Volunteers will be covered by SSAFAs Public Liability Insurance whilst carrying out the role.

What are we looking for?

• Friendly and approachable people of any age (18+) with some experience of coordinating people and admin
• Willingness and ability to lead and manage a team of volunteers.
• Respectful and non-judgemental approach with beneficiaries, their family, other agencies and SSAFA colleagues
• Willingness and ability to learn basic digital skills. Ability to send and receive emails – you will receive your own SSAFA email address which you will be required to use when exercising your role.
• Willingness to use our on-line case management system (this is covered in the training course)
• Ability to understand and keep within the boundaries of the role for which training will be given.
• Reliability
• Practice confidentiality and data protection in line with SSAFA policies.
• Willingness and means to travel to meetings or events as required.
• Good written and spoken English.

About Disability Snowsport UK (DSUK) 

Disability Snowsport UK’s vision is of mountains and ski slopes free from barriers, where disabled people can learn and take part alongside family, friends and peers.

Our Mission 

To make snowsport accessible for everyone; regardless of disability, injury or experience. We work to remove the barriers to taking part so that disabled children and adults, and their families can enjoy the freedom, independence and the physical and wellbeing benefits of skiing and snowboarding, and related activities.

We do this by:  

• Providing expert adaptive teaching for individuals, families and groups across the UK 

• Providing holidays and activities in the UK and worldwide  

• Providing social and recreational skiing groups 

• Working with governing bodies, training organisations and partners to widen access, increase awareness and share knowledge 

The Role 

The role of the Trustee is to ensure the activities of the charity support its purpose and serve the interests of its beneficiaries. Trustees provide strategic guidance, governance and oversight of management, ensuring the organisation is accountable and acting as a ‘critical friend’ to the CEO. They are there to protect the charities assets both physical and reputational. They make sure resources are managed responsibly and that the charity is run sustainably.  

Currently an active board of 12, we are forward planning for routine board member rotation in 2025. To complement our existing board and support our strategic direction, we are looking for up to four additional trustees to bring knowledge, skills and experience in one or more of the following areas:

(note: this is an illustration of the type of experience we are looking for, not an exhaustive list of must-haves): 

Lived Experience 

• This may include personal experience, of either being disabled or supporting someone with a disability e.g. a family member, caring for someone with a disability or working with people with disabilities.

• You will have an understanding of issues and barriers around participation, access and inclusion and their impact on health and wellbeing.  An understanding of the social model of disability is beneficial. 

Strategic Organisational Development / HR  

• Experience across the range of HR activity including recruitment, performance management, reward, organisation culture and change management.

• Experience of organisation design and development including board and senior leadership development and succession planning. 

• Board or committee experience with capability to take on the role of Chair of the Nomination, Remuneration and Governance Committee at a future date.

Legal Experience  

• Professional experience within a legal field. Experience in supporting organisations to ensure adherence to relevant laws, regulations and governing documents. 

• Ability to offer guidance and support compliance with charity law in the UK and other contractual obligations. 

In addition to the above areas, we are looking for someone with skills to take on the role of company secretary and would be interested in hearing from individuals who feel they could take up this role.

The Vice Chair provides crucial support to the Chair and the Board of Trustees, ensuring the charity's smooth operation and strategic direction. You will act as a deputy, take on additional tasks, and help manage the chair's workload. The Vice Chair's role can vary, but generally involves supporting the chair, acting as a sounding board, and sharing responsibilities. 

Duties can involve:

Support the work of the Chair, and deputise where necessary, in the execution of the following responsibilities, in order to:

• Provide leadership to the charity and its Board, to ensure it operates within its charitable objectives, with a clear strategic direction for the executive team.

• Ensure that Trustees fulfil their duties and responsibilities for effective governance.

• Ensure that meetings are regular and effective.

• Work with the Chair and Chief Executive Officer to ensure that sub-committees make effective and timely recommendations to the Board. • Lead a sub- committee of the board responsible for business development, and/ or such other sub-committees, teams, or working groups as may be created by the board.

• Review the performance of the board.

• Assist with the recruitment of new trustees.

Essential experiance should include:

• Experience as a trustee of a charity

• Be committed to the organisation and has sufficient time and willingness to contribute effectively to board proceedings

• Be able to work effectively as a member of a team 

• Be able to make quick and sound decisions based on an analysis of information presented to them

• Have a passion for the social sector and social change 

• Be able to manage risks with a balanced and informed approach

The secretary's role is to ensure our Foodbank charity runs smoothly and efficiently, and complies with all relevant laws and regulations. As secretary you will be responsible for the following areas:

Governance

You will be responsible for the charity's governing document, and ensure that the trustees' actions are in line with it. You will ensure that all appropriate policies and procedures are in place and advise the board on the legal and regulatory implications of the charity's strategic plan.

Meetings 

You will plan trustee meetings, including the AGM, and any sub-committees. You will also be responsible for preparing agendas, booking rooms and supporting the chair and minutes secretary.

Compliance 

You will ensure the charity complies with all relevant laws and regulations, including health and safety, the Charities Act 2009 and the Charities Governance Code and you will also help trustees file statutory returns with the Charities Regulator. You will also ensure that the Charity and Trustees are appropriately insured, negotiating cover to obtain reasonable value.

Records 

You will maintain registers of members, trustees, and secretaries, and keep other legal documents, such as insurance policies.

Communication 

You will liaise with the chair and operations manager, and communicate with the board about compliance requirements.

Public relations 

You will help oversee aspects of public relations where needed.

• Relevant Persons' Representative (RPR) Support Volunteer

Relevant Person’s Representative (RPR) Support Volunteers

People in care homes should have a voice to communicate their needs wishes and wants. Some people need support with this, but don’t have friends and family available to assist them.  This means they’re entitled to have support from an RPR and volunteer, who are there to make sure they get the care they deserve.  Your role as an RPR Support Volunteer is to collaborate with the VoiceAbility RPR to make sure a person’s views are listened to when decisions are made about their care. 

As an RPR Support Volunteer you might: 

• Visit people in their care home, to make sure they’re getting the right care and support
• Talk with them about their feelings, thoughts and wishes
• Raise concerns
• Keep detailed notes and records
• Make a real difference to someone’s life 

Volunteering opportunities are available Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:00.  You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK.

Our governance volunteers (school governors) have direct impact in the community through:

• decision making in the best interests of pupils to improve their education, wellbeing and future prospects and raise community aspirations
• shaping school policies and aims, allowing teachers to focus on delivering high-quality educational experiences
• stakeholder engagement to ensure that the voices of staff, parents, pupils and other stakeholders are heard

Most LGC members have a four-year term of office, except for co-opted members who are appointed for one year. They attend around four meetings each year, which are usually held late afternoon/early evening during term-time. LGC members are also involved in scrutiny activities in school, which usually happen once or twice a term during the school day. LGC members also participate in decision-making panels (for admissions and exclusions) for schools in the Trust. The average time commitment for our LGC members is 8-12 hours per month.

For LGC Chairs, there is need to be involved in contact with a range of stakeholders within the school, the community, and across the trust. This will include more frequent meetings in school, possibly during the day, although many of these may be outside normal school hours. Depending upon school priorities, we would expect the typical Chair time commitment to be around 15-20hrs per month, although some of this can be done online and by phone around work and home commitments.

NEAT takes safeguarding seriously, and all governance volunteers are required to undertake a vetting process (including DBS check) during appointment to best safeguard our pupils and schools.

Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution seeks Trustee -Cultural Activities Lead

The Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution promotes and advances science, literature, and art for the public benefit in the City of Bath. This is achieved through:

- Maintaining a museum with exhibits of historical, scientific, literary, or artistic interest.

- Providing a library, lectures, and educational facilities related to literature, science, and art.

- Promoting and publishing useful research in these fields.

The BRLSI operates as a volunteer-led charity, with its Board of Directors overseeing financial affairs and governance. Various committees manage activities, supported by a small team of employed staff. The Board is establishing a new committee to develop cultural and educational initiatives. The Charity is seeking a Cultural Activities Lead to chair this committee and serve on both the Management and Finance & Audit Committees. Initially, this individual will join the Board as an honorary, non-voting member before becoming a full Director.

The Cultural Activities Lead will oversee the development of a rich and varied programme of cultural, curatorial, and educational activities, attracting new audiences and building its reputation. They will facilitate the new committee’s management and advise the Board on strategy and policy. Furthermore, the Lead will establish successful and proactive relationships with local, regional, national and international organisations, helping expand the Institution’s cultural offering and commercial success.

The successful candidate will be a proven leader, experienced in heritage, cultural and/or curatorial sector governance.
