The Green House Bristol is looking for a new Chair of Trustees to join our Trustee board. As Chair of Trustees, you will play a critical leadership role and ensure the Trustee board functions effectively.
Overview of the role
3 in 20 girls and 1 in 20 boys will experience sexual violence before they turn 18. Yet, with access to the right help, children and their families can heal and recover. The Green House offers this lifeline, delivering the only specialist service to children, young people and families who have experienced sexual abuse living in Avon and Somerset.
We are currently recruiting for a new Chair of Trustees to join our Trustee board. As a Trustee of The Green House, you will play a crucial role in setting the strategic direction of the charity and ensuring good governance. You will contribute to ensuring that the charity fulfils its mission, operates effectively, and remains accountable to survivors of child sexual abuse, and their families.
In addition to the general duties as Trustee, as Chair you will be in a leadership role: overseeing the Trustee board, acting as a spokesperson and ambassador for the charity, and working closely with The Green House’s CEO.
Please note that you will also be appointed as a Director of The Green House, reflecting our registration as both a charity and a Private Limited Company.

Duties of all Trustees

Prepare for and attend Board meetings, using your skills, expertise, and knowledge to contribute to discussions.

Participate in setting the charity’s strategic direction. Contribute to decision-making on key matters, including long-term planning, financial sustainability, and program development.

Provide support, learning and challenge to The Green House’s CEO.

Ensure The Green House acts in line with its governing document and complies with all relevant laws and regulations.

Ensure the charity lives its values (hope, creativity, and connection), delivering accountability to children who have experienced sexual abuse and their families.

Monitor operational progress against The Green House’s new strategy.

Ensure the charities financial and wider resources are being used effectively and treated with care.

Ensure all relevant policies and procedures are in place and are being implemented.

Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored, and controlled effectively.

Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect The Green House’s interests, to the exclusion of your own personal and/or any third-party interests.

Proactively represent The Green House, building the charity’s visibility and reputation.
Duties of the Chair

Provide strategic leadership to the charity and the Board, ensuring that The Green House achieves its mission.

Work in partnership with the CEO, offering challenge and support towards our goals.

Act as Line Manager to the CEO and conduct annual appraisals of the CEO.

Lead the board in ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation.

Plan and chair monthly board meetings.
-
Act as a spokesperson and ambassador for The Green House.
Terms of appointment
Terms of office
-
Trustees are appointed for a three-year term of office, with renewal for two further terms to a maximum of three years.

This is a voluntary position, but all reasonable expenses are covered.
Time commitment (Approximately 2-4 days a month)

Attend monthly Board meetings. These are typically held on a Thursday evening at 6pm. Most meetings are virtual although we do meet in-person on a quarterly basis.

Line Management and Appraisal of the CEO (1 hour every 6 weeks; 1 hour annually).
-
Additional time is needed to take ownership of actions that arise from meetings (from supporting with recruitment and exit interviews where appropriate, to attending events on The Green House’s behalf). You will also need to be flexible in responding to emergent time-urgent issues when they arise.

We also ask Trustees to attend an initial induction day at The Green House, The Green House’s annual Festival of Activism against Child Sexual Abuse (1 day in early February) and spend a strategy day with the staff team (typically 1 day September). From time to time, depending on the nature of the Fundraising activity it may be necessary for Trustee’s to attend fundraising events/meetings with the CEO.

Our organisation has great demand but has suffered over the last 12 months due to reduced funding. We seek Trustees with fundraising experience or from the LGBTQI+ community who can help us as we continue to meet our growing needs.
What will you be doing?
We are currently looking for two new Trustees. Our Trustees are like a non-executive board of directors - although they are not involved in the day-to-day running of the charity, they oversee what we do and make sure we stay on track, meeting 4 times per year in Accrington or via Teams for up to 2 hours at a time. In between meetings, the charity's management and admin team might call on the trustees for particular issues with which they need help or support, such as proofreading funding applications, working on developing specific projects using a trustee's contacts or area of expertise, or simply when a sounding board for new ideas is needed.
Our trustees may also come to our events a few times a year to keep up with what we are doing - this is arranged as convenient for the trustees.
New trustees will be joining our board, which currently stands at 5. The only absolute requirements are that you are interested in and enthusiastic about what we do and that you are willing to work to support the charity using any skills, knowledge, or contacts that you have that may be relevant.

The UK Rep Pool is a collection of 18-25-year-olds from around the UK who are trained to represent the UK Scout Association at events in the UK and abroad. These events vary from the conferences, seminars and workshops mentioned on the website and may be from a single day to a whole week. The UK Rep Pool then ensure that any learning, knowledge and inspiration from these events is brought back to the relevant teams of volunteers at UK level as well as sections they may be involved in locally.
As a Rep Pool member, you will be expected to attend a training day once a year and bi-monthly calls. The Basement door is a charity based in Richmond that provides young people with the opportunity to work in the Music industry. Our Graduates are anything from Performing Artists to Lighting or Sound technicians and a variety of other roles in Music.
Launched in 2008, we've been using our expertise and resources to help young people fulfil their potential and have fun through music. We've been running youth events for more than 15 years and became a registered charity in 2018. Since then, we've been working to grow The Basement Door and its impact, expanding from just one town to now putting on music events in more than 10 locations across South West London.
We now need the help of an experienced Fundraiser to help us grow and provide other opportunities for young people such as the practice studio we hope to build in central Twickenham.

Our retail shops are the face of our charity on the high-street and in local communities. As a Customer Support Volunteer you will provide a first class customer service experience, ensuring customers find everything they need during their visit.
Our amazing team of vibrant & diverse volunteers helps us run our retail shops, raising money for vulnerable children, young people and families across the UK.

Why we want you
Our customer support volunteers provide a first class customer service experience, ensuring customers find everything they need during their visit.
What you will be doing
- You may choose to do some or all of these tasks - working on the till, helping customers with enquiries, meeting and greeting customers, covering changing rooms.
- Maintain a high level of customer service
- Work with other volunteers to have a good knowledge of areas of stock and support customers with general questions and queries
- Process sales on the till
- Supporting customers with donations and gift aid
- Support the implementation of seasonal campaigns and promotional activities in-line with the stores marketing activity plan
- Ensuring the store remains clean and tidy
- Ensure all health and safety policies and procedures are adhered to
- Ensure all security procedures are adhered to
The skills you need
- Friendly and helpful
- Happy to be part of an amazing team of staff and volunteers
- Enthusiastic about the work of Barnardo’s
- Excellent customer service skills
- Good verbal communication skills and able to engage positively with customers
- Willingness to learn basic IT skills, for tasks such as working on the till
- Problem-solving abilities to help resolve queries and issues
- Ability to work independently, as part of a team and use your initiative

Barnardo's receives donations of a variety of items which we sell in our Superstores. We are looking for a visual merchandiser volunteer to support with creating eye-catching shelves and window displays.
The role would be a great fit for someone who has a real passion for fashion, an eye for detail and understands basic principles of visual merchandising. Your role is to create amazing displays which will make Barnardo's stand out on the high street and encourage members of the public to come into our stores.
