Volunteering in the shop

Our Belmont Road Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

Selling womenswear, menswear, shoes, and bags to household goods, our shops can be found in the London villages and bring in vital funds for Save the Children.

We are a large Sea Cadet unit, who also have Royal Marines Cadets and Junior Sea Cadets (aged 10-12).

Our largest section is the Sea Cadets. They are aged 12-18. Cadets take part in many activities, events and competitions. The volunteer instructors teach and deliver these experiences, to suit their own knowledge and skillsets.

Our volunteers are excellent at sharing their knowledge with new adults that would like to have a go and see what we're all about.

Our command and management teams are keen to welcome new adults to the organisation and is grateful for the time everyone puts in.

As adult volunteers, you will gain a new friendship group, much support in learning new content, teaching experience with support, National Governing Body qualifications/awards, that are widely recognised. For example First Aid at Work and RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling (driving licence), plus many others.

Some of the activities the cadets take part in:

• Remembrance Day parades.
• Rowing competitions.
• Kayaking.
• Sailing.
• Windsurfing.

Some of the courses cadets learn:

• First Aid
• Seamanship
• Meterorology
• Peer Education
• Rock climbing

Some of the events cadets take part in:

• Birmgingham International Tattoo
• Sutton Coldfield Civic Sunday service (with the town council)
• Trafalgar Day parades.
• Royal Sutton Fun Run
• Birmingham Triathlon
• Sutton Coldfield Community Games

Our St Andrews Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

Skills and experiences we seek

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need any retail or shop experience as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and to follow our policies as well as be an excellent representative for Save the Children. 

We know that our shop teams are stronger when they are inclusive and representative of their communities. Everybody can make a real difference. People come to us for all sorts of reasons, from all backgrounds, and we will do what we can to find a role that works for you.

What happens next?

After you’ve filled in an application, we will invite you for an informal trial shift. It’s a great opportunity to visit the shop, meet some of our existing volunteers and have a go at some of the tasks that you would be supporting with as a shop volunteer. Hopefully allowing you to get a feel for the role and make sure it’s for you. We also ask for a couple of references (these don’t have to be formal workplace ones, just someone who has known you for over 6 months and isn’t related).

Location: Hampshire (Board meetings in person)
Commitment: Approx. 2 days/month, including 5 Finance Committee meetings and 5 Board meetings annually, and ad-hoc conversations with Finance team
Remuneration: Unremunerated voluntary role with expenses reimbursed

A thriving community charity working across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to support children, young people, and families is looking to appoint a Chair of the Finance Committee. They work through early years education, youth services, housing, and outdoor activities, the charity helps individuals belong, contribute, and thrive.

The Board is now seeking a Trustee to Chair the Finance Committee, a key governance role ensuring the charity’s financial sustainability and strategic direction. The successful candidate will provide oversight of financial performance, budgeting, compliance, and long-term planning, working closely with the Board and Executive Leadership Team to support the organisation’s mission and vision.

The ideal candidate will bring:

• A professional finance qualification (fully qualified)
• Senior-level experience in financial planning, strategy, and risk management
• Experience in being a Trustee, and/or chairing a committee.
• Familiarity with charity financial management and regulatory requirements (preferred)
• The ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial board members
• A collaborative approach and commitment to the values of the charity

This is a highly rewarding opportunity to make a tangible difference to the communities that the charity serves.
