We are seeking a new trustee with legal (and ideally, public policy) expertise to help strengthen our governance, advise on risk, and support our influence in law and policymaking spaces.

You’ll support our work to improve legal protections for LGBT+ people, guide strategic decisions on risk and compliance, and help Galop navigate legal landscapes around advocacy, safeguarding, and survivors’ rights.

What We’re Looking For

We are keen to hear from:

• Practicing or former lawyers (especially equality, public, human rights, family, safeguarding, or charity law).

• Policy professionals with experience in government, advocacy, or regulatory sectors.

• Individuals who bring insight into legal systems, public sector strategy, or policy reform.

You don’t need to have been a trustee before. What matters is your commitment to our values and your ability to think strategically, challenge constructively, and act in the best interests of the charity.

Terms of Appointment

Appointments are for an initial term of three years, renewable for up to two further terms of three years.

Remuneration

This is a voluntary role and there is no remuneration. Reasonable expenses incurred in the role will be reimbursed in line with the organisation’s expenses policy.

Location

Generally, meetings are held remotely online, with an annual Board Strategy Day being held in London.

Time Commitment

There are currently 4 formal Board meetings per year and more regular sub-committee meetings. The board meetings currently take place on Zoom on a Wednesday evening for approximately 2.5 hours. Sub-committee dates and times are flexible.

Other time commitments will include ongoing liaison with the Chair of the Board, Chief Executive and other senior staff, as well as attendance at other meetings, such as interview panels and events as required. We anticipate the overall time commitment being approximately 3-4 days per month for the first 12-18 months, settling to 2 days per month after that.

We are looking for passionate volunteers to facilitate a weekly group, to discuss topics relating to mental health. We are hoping to find someone who has either ‘lived experience’ of mental health issues and is now at a positive place with their own recovery or someone who has good knowledge of mental health and looking to support others.

We work with people who need support with their mental health across London and the South East. Our support ranges from registered accommodation services for people with severe mental health conditions to drop-in community and crisis services.

In the last year, 9,499 adults accessed Hestia’s mental health support.

We help people to feel safe, develop hope for a better future, and achieve their personal goals. These goals may include rebuilding relationships with family members and friends or connecting more with their local community.#

What you will be doing

• Facilitating weekly peer support groups, covering topics related to mental health.
• To encourage participation and to provide focus and guidance for discussions within the group
• To negotiate/facilitate conflicts or disagreements that may arise during group meetings

The skills you need

• Strong listening and communication skills
• Ability to create and maintain a safe environment where the participants' thoughts and feelings are valued, and group members are treated with fairness, equity and respect
• Lived experience of mental health or desire to learn

At Hestia we have gardens and outdoor spaces which require your support to bring these back to life by keeping them maintained. We are recruiting for volunteers to motivate and inspire staff and people living in our services to get involved in gardening. • Inspire and motivate staff and people in the services to get involved in maintaining and growing the garden
• To provide tips on how to maintain and grow the garden - sowing seeds, planting bulbs, taking cuttings
• Provide basic maintenance such as cutting the grass, emptying bins, managing weed control and leaf raking
• Lead in planting and nurturing new trees, flowers, and various plants
• Provide best practice on how to use the correct gardening tools
• Inspire people in our services and staff to maintain a clean garden
• Advise staff on the costs of plants and garden necessities

You’ll support our work to improve the lives and safety of LGBT+ people experiencing violence and abuse, guide strategic decisions on risk and compliance, advise on service user complaints – including participating in complaints panels, and help Galop navigate best practice on advocacy, safeguarding, and survivors’ rights.

What you will be doing

• Coordinate and facilitate weekly walks in local parks to the service alongside other volunteers
• Meet with the walking group weekly
• Hold conversations with people attending the group, checking in on their wellbeing and providing a listening ear/friendly face
• Keep a record of attendees, provide feedback, and report any concerns to the staff team
• Ability to provide a supportive, and inclusive atmosphere that encourages participation

The skills you need

• Inspire and motivate people to attend the walking group
• Ability to identify, manage any possible risks that may arise during the walking group. Training will be provided
• Willing and able to go on a weekly walk lasting approximately 60-90 minutes

Our amazing team of volunteers help us run over 100 shops across England and Wales.  Every donated item that you sort, prepare and sell helps to raise vital funds to support us in our mission to make sure no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, is isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Our shops are at the heart of local communities – sharing the work of Sense, and helping to secure support for our life changing work.

What your role will involve

There are a variety of tasks that you can get involved with in the shop, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience
• Receiving donated goods from members of the public
• Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated goods for sale
• Creating eye catching window and in-shop displays
• Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised
• Processing sales and serving on the till
• Promoting Gift Aid and other Sense fundraising initiatives
• Acting as an ambassador for Sense; promoting the shop and Sense in your local community
• Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers
• Following new health and safety measures to ensure the safety of everyone

We require the successful candidate's to assist with the Tamworth Network in Community Engagement Events and Fundraising Events. This will involve setting up and putting away the Gazebo's, Flags, Promotional Material and Equipment. Will also include speaking to members of the public about St John and what we do, and how they can get involved and help save lives. Also could include asking people for donations at fundraising events.

When the interview has been passed and screening for the role is complete you will be invited to a short Network induction and meet the other members of the network in Tamworth. 

The Induction will take place if successful at the Interview and screening complete.

Training will be provided at Network Meeting Nights which take place Thursday Evenings 7:30 PM until 9pm Approx.

We will make sure you will have access to a proper induction to volunteering with SJA and the training you need for the role you take on. We will also provide you with a supportive environment while you are volunteering with us. Information about our volunteer roles are included in the role descriptions. There is an expectation to regularly attend training meetings at Preston, Lancaster or Kirkham (2 per month). Complete relevant training for including a 2 day training course.

We are looking to run volunteering selection sessions throughout August, September, October and November. You will chose a selection event that suits you to take place in Kirkham, Preston and Lancaster

If you are successful you will need to attend a face to face 2 day training course and online training & a Welcome Event (Induction) - Dates to be confirmed.

At St John Ambulance, we are looking to develop our volunteering offer and become an even more integral part of our communities through delivering community first aid and education. 

We need people who have a passion for helping others, care about their communities and want to make a difference, supporting them to become safe and more resilient by sharing your first aid skills and knowledge. As a Community First Aider, you’ll deliver first aid to those in need through local events, as well as provide education to the public so that the ripple effect of First Aid grows.

Through supporting the growth of community partnerships, you will bring people along to our cause, growing our membership and fundraising base and spreading the message that First Aid Saves Lives. 

Through volunteering as a Community First Aider, you’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time.
