Job description

Could you be there for children?

At Childline, our free counselling service for children, a child contacts us every 25 seconds.

And thanks to our dedicated volunteers, who do a shift each week, we can offer support when it’s needed most.

To make sure it stays that way, we’re looking for more brilliant people who want to make a difference.

After you get trained and set up in your local base, you’ll be helping children and young people who need someone to talk to. Listening to them at first and then offering support, information, or practical advice.

Interested? Then get ready to take a life-changing step forward – for you and for children.

“Knowing that I’ve been there for a young person when no one else is. That’s special.”

 – Atiyah, Volunteer Childline Counsellor

So who are we looking for?

While Childline is committed to training volunteers, applicants do need to meet certain criteria for this role. Can you demonstrate the following traits?

  • A genuine passion for helping children and young people.
  • Good communication skills (written, oral and listening).
  • The desire to make an impact.
  • The ability to work in a team.
  • The ability to deal with stress appropriately.
  • An empathetic and non-judgmental outlook.
  • Emotional resilience.
  • An openness to feedback, learning and continuous improvement.

If that sounds like you, can you commit to a regular 3.75 hour shift for at least a year?

We have three ChildLine Helpline opportunities in Aberdeen: Volunteer Counsellor, Volunteer Email Counsellor and Volunteer Switchboarder. (Note: the apply link will take you straight to our switchboarder advert; if you are interested in the other available roles pleasse email the NSPCC's Volunteer Recruitment Team.)

I can do a shift, but do I get training?

Yes. To prepare you for the role, you’ll do some initial training. It’s completed over an 8 hour workshop, where you’ll learn and practice the IT skills you need for the role, and the ways you can help keep children safe.
