Canopy
are on a mission to make shopping sustainably easier for everyone.
Fast fashion retailers and cheap plastic products are still wrecking our planet and choking our waterways. We need to buy better. But big retailers are now consistently greenwashing, misleading the very people who are trying to do their bit. It's left nearly 50% of consumers finding it too complicated to even try to shop sustainably. For consumers to shop sustainably they have to go through multiple user journeys on different platforms with very little support in moving from one to the next. Verifying claims, learning about swaps, making a purchase, and tracking your impact accurately are all separated and difficult to do.
We need to remove the barriers, streamline the user journey and give back proper trust. Canopey is the only platform to completely streamline the ethical consumer journey. They bring thousands of verified sustainable products into one online marketplace with powerful impact stats to show the Co2e, water waste, and plastic waste saved per purchase compared to the mainstream alternative. Canopey helps guide you through the minefield of greenwashing to empower everyone to buy better. On one platform, with one user journey, and one mission.

-
They are looking for a VOLUNTEER Sustainability Expert who is passionate about environmental issues. Your main role will be to help support the team in our work verifying the green claims made by brands that want to list their products on Canopey. -
Responsibilities include: - Evaluating and verifying sustainability claims and evidence from suppliers and brands to ensure they meet our standards. - Working closely with the Canopey team to review and improve our sustainability criteria and guidelines. - Opportunity to work on research and development of new sustainability initiatives or programs. - Potential to also contribute to social media content and blogs we put out which focus on sustainability topics - Participating in workshops and seminars to stay updated on the latest sustainability trends and practices. - Collaborating with other team members to promote a holistic approach to sustainability across all aspects of the business. HF Mencap supports people with learning disabilities, autism and developmental conditions. You will ensure high standards of governance and legal compliance but need not have previous experience as Company Secretary.
What will you be doing?
HF Mencap is the only disabilities charity in Hammersmith and Fulham that focuses solely on people with learning disabilities, autism, and other developmental conditions.
The Charity provides a wide range of service-user led activity, summarised in four projects: advocacy for families of young people with learning disabilities, a parent led forum for those with children and young people up to 25 with additional needs and learning disabilities, a youth development project for young adults, and a day service where the focus is on peer support and skills development through a range of inclusive activities.
As Company Secretary you will lead on maintaining high standards of governance and ensuring legal compliance.
As a Trustee you will help HF Mencap continue to provide the highest standards of professional, specialist support and care for the people who use our services and set a clear, ambitious direction for the charity’s future. The Trustees have overall responsibility for ensuring the charity is well-run and meets legal requirements, charitable objectives, and those of good governance. You will use your personal skills and experience to help the Board reach structured and sound decisions.
What are we looking for?
Somebody based in London with a corporate governance, legal or business background. It is desirable but not essential to have previous Trustee and/or Company Secretary experience as appropriate training and mentorship can be provided. You do need to be organised, methodical, and able to ensure that HF Mencap fulfils its obligations both as a charity and limited company.
We are also very keen to hear from you if you have lived experience of a learning disability and/or autism or are a parent or carer of someone who does. Alternatively, you may have direct experience of working with people who do.
Whatever your circumstances you feel strongly about HF Mencap's cause and want to combine your expertise and passion to create a better world for those it supports. You are willing to bring your skills and experience to the table to help shape HF Mencap’s future. You are enthusiastic, able to commit time and effort, and enjoy being part of a team.
The role is voluntary, with any necessary out of pocket expenses reimbursed. Appointment is for a three-year term with the opportunity to be re-appointed for a period of up to three years.
Essential
- Based in London
- Expertise in one of the following areas: legal, compliance, corporate governance, accountancy or office and administration management
Desirable
- Previous experience of acting as a Trustee and/or Company Secretary
- Lived experience of having a learning disability and/or autism, being a parent or carer of somebody who does, or experience of working directly with people who do.
The following personal skills and attributes are needed:
- Commitment to HF Mencap’s support of people with a learning disability, their families, and carers.
- Excellent communication and co-ordination skills.
- Dependability in meeting deadlines.
- A keen eye for the accuracy of detail.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team that makes collective decisions.
- Willingness to speak your mind while collaborating with others.
- Energy to devote the necessary time and effort to the role.
- Ability to undertake analysis, discussion and decision making at a strategic level.
- Sound, independent judgement.
- Ability to think creatively.
- Willingness to work in uncertain circumstances and be receptive to change.
- Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trusteeship.
- Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership.
What difference will you make?
The current social and economic pressures have put the needs of those living with learning disability further down the national agenda. You will be helping to keep their voice heard and enabling a local charity to take an even more active role in helping to address the inequality faced by so many of them. As Company Secretary you will help to underpin the charity’s credibility by maintaining high standards of governance and reporting.
Before you apply
Please provide a comprehensive cv with your full name and contact details by March 25th (at the latest), together with a supporting statement setting out why you are for applying for this role and how you meet the person specification. Are you interested in supporting children and young people’s education, mental and physical health through the performing arts, theatre and dance?
You could be a trustee for Artemis Studios, a Bracknell-based charity that’s now growing our Board, ready for the next stages of development.
Artemis Studios Performing Arts Schools Limited is a Charity only Registered in March 2022, while our not-for-personal-profit organisation has been providing similar services in Bracknell since at least August 2014 and our roots go back locally to 2007. This, of course, means our charity Board of trustees is still growing, and needs new skills and abilities to achieve that growth.
If you have specific interests or skills in funding, fund-raising, strategic planning or the legal duties of trustees, we’d really like to talk with you; in any case, if you’re interested in helping our organisation’s growth as part of our collective Board, please read on and apply.
We’re interested in you if you’re interested in us!
The role and what we are looking for in a new trustee
Trustees are the people who make the top-level decisions for our charity. Our Board includes people with experience and skills in performing and creative arts, and we’d expect new trustees to have empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries.
Interest in young people, mental health support, education would be beneficial, but potential applicants do not need in-depth understanding of, or involvement in, our operational cause.
If you have specific experience, skills or abilities in:
- Funding and fund-raising
- Strategic planning for our charity
- Legal responsibilities in a Charitable Company
we’d really welcome your application.
If you have interests other than those, don’t be put off: ask us!
Full induction to our organisation will be provided, plus specialist support as a new trustee including access to external training.
If you can think strategically and plan long-term, you have what our trustees primarily need; you’ll also need to work collectively with other Board members. Support from our paid employees is always available, under the leadership of our CEO, who works closely with the Board to develop and implement our strategic and operational plans.
We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We are looking for people from a variety of backgrounds to join our charity. We want to expand the diversity of our Board, in all meanings, and strongly welcome applications from people from less-represented groups.
The focus of a trustee role is strategic, and trustees will not be expected to get involved in the organisation’s operations on a day-to-day basis; however, contact and liaison with other trustees and employees is expected.
We ask for about six hours of your time per month, which includes all meetings, discussions, etc. You will need access to digital communications, as much of our charity’s business is run that way.
How to apply
This appointment is being managed for us by inVOLve Community Services, a charity-support organisation, who offer a no-obligation discussion by phone or video. A detailed Role Description and Skills Specification can be made available to you upon request.
You will need to be eligible to be a Charity Trustee and Company Director, which we will explain. Trustee appointments are subject to satisfactory references, to completion of an online Safeguarding course and an Enhanced DBS check.
Your CV or similar will be read by our existing trustees, and an interview offered as soon as mutually convenient.
I need to know more
Contact Mike Allen via Quick Apply below, for more information and arrange to have a no-obligation initial informal discussion (Teams/Zoom/phone)
