A fantastic opportunity to build knowledge of the UK asylum system, gain hands-on casework experience and deliver an essential service to refugees.
About us
Care4Calais is a volunteer-based charity providing essential aid and support for refugees in France and the UK.
In northern France we operate year-round from Calais, providing warm clothing, bedding, food and assistance to refugees who live in appalling and dangerous conditions.
Across the UK we collect and distribute clothes, shoes, mobile phones and other essential items, as well as social support and interaction, including language lessons, sport and music workshops. We also help with vital access to legal, medical and educational services.
Our Legal Access Department is an access to justice project that exists to arrange critical legal representation for people seeking asylum and, more than this, to support people through the hostility and difficulty of claiming asylum. The department, made up mostly of volunteers, works tirelessly to ensure that people feel informed, empowered, and far less isolated and alone.
About the role
The aim of this role is to provide crucial one-to-one casework and support to people seeking asylum in the UK. Our Asylum Team assists asylum seekers in navigating the UK asylum process by finding them specialist solicitors and working with our volunteer interpreters to help them organise their paperwork. We currently work with 100+ legal firms around the UK, providing an invaluable service to both the asylum-seeker and the overstretched legal immigration teams. You’ll have the chance to gain broad experience of working in a fast-paced and experienced team while meeting the ever-changing needs of those we support. So, if you thrive in a collaborative environment and are looking for a role where you can make a real difference, we want to hear from you!
The Role
As a Legal Access Caseworker, you’ll focus on providing outstanding support to your clients throughout the complex asylum process.
In this busy, hands-on role, you’ll gain a deep understanding of the function of the UK asylum system so we can provide the highest standards of service to those who need us most. A key focus will be on maintaining accurate and complete records and processes and delivering high quality service to every one of our vulnerable clients.
We are looking for people who have a genuine passion for human rights and refugee protection. If this is you, please get in touch.
Responsibilities
-
Manage own caseload of adult asylum seekers requiring legal representation to support their asylum claims and to challenge unsuitable accommodation, poor treatment, and uphold our client's rights.
-
Communicate effectively and sensitively with clients and refer to legal firms where appropriate.
-
Identify clients’ individual wellbeing needs and make onward referrals internally and externally in line with this. Provide emotional support to clients undertaking the process of claiming asylum in the UK.
-
Liaise with legal teams on behalf of clients where necessary.
-
Keep relevant records up to date to allow for quick and effective retrieval.
-
Attend and contribute meaningfully to team meetings.
-
Develop and maintain a network of key contacts within relevant authorities, legal teams dealing with immigration and public law matters, and other NGOs focused on support of refugees and people seeking asylum.
-
Attend relevant external meetings representing the organisation as needed, ensuring that knowledge and learning is shared across the department.
-
Ensure that any safeguarding concerns are identified and responded to appropriately.
-
Complete relevant external training required for you to undertake the role.

The Royal Air Force Central Fund is seeking an independent member to join its Finance and Risk Committee. The member will work with the Committee to oversee the Fund’s finance and risk governance, ensuring these are aligned with the Fund’s charitable and strategic objectives. Following a recent transformation, this voluntary role will give the member an opportunity to support and develop one of the country’s most exciting sport bodies.
About the RAF Central Fund (the Fund)
The RAF Central Fund is a 100-year-old charity that supports the 30,000+ serving personnel and over 40 stations that make up the RAF; the charity works to safeguard the health and well-being of serving RAF personnel through access to sporting opportunities and physical activities. The remaining associations are currently in a consultation process with the aim of following suit to merge over the next couple of years. The goal of this change is to reduce the administrative burden and free the associations up to focus on delivering their respective sports for their members. Do you envisage a world free from animal suffering? As a Grassroots Organiser, you will help make this vision a reality by organising regular campaign events and actions in your local area. All materials provided and relevant expenses paid.
Why join us? We exist to end the abuse of animals raised for food. We work specifically on corporate focused campaigns demanding better welfare practices for chickens. The actions and events you organise will help to open the eyes of the general public to the truth of factory farming, and add vital pressure onto our corporate targets, ultimately resulting in reducing animal suffering.
As a warm, friendly and approachable person, you will thrive taking the lead organising events and actions and enjoy meeting like-minded people.
We're a remote team, so we can support you wherever you are in the UK. There are no limitations on location.
As a Grassroots Organiser, you will be changing animal lives by:
-
Organising events/actions in your local area including social meet-ups, peaceful protests, leafleting and public outreach (roughly 1 event every 6-8 weeks is ideal where possible). All materials are provided and relevant expenses paid.
-
Promote your events/actions and encourage others to join you, bringing people together for the animals to create change
-
Joining us at other in-person events/actions including peaceful protests organised by staff and other volunteers
-
Get involved in campaign actions remotely, such as writing emails, letters, social media actions and more
-
Attend online events within the volunteer community
The events and actions you organise don't need to be big, 2 or 3 people getting out there for the animals will make all the difference and we have an existing community of volunteers to tap into.
Perfect for those interested in gaining firsthand experience in campaigning or volunteer management, or just interested in creating direct change for animals. If you’re excited by the prospect of speaking to the public and taking the lead to organise local actions, all while making a genuine difference to animals, this is the role for you.
You will be working directly with THL UK staff members who will steward and support you throughout your time with us, including a full onboarding process to get you started. We'll give you everything you need, no prior experience needed.
There is no set time commitment for this role, you can get involved at a time that works for you, but we ask that you organise at least 1 event every 6-8 weeks where possible. It takes around 4-6 hours to deliver an event (including planning and delivery). Whether you're a student, retired, working full time, or somewhere in between - we would love to welcome you.
If you agree with our vision, and you want to do your part to help end the abuse of animals raised for food, join our team today.
Disclaimer:
The Humane League UK is committed to building a diverse, equitable and inclusive team. We are an equal opportunities organisation and welcome volunteer applications from all people, regardless of their race, sex, age, religion, disability, neurodiversity, orientation, gender identity or expression. We endeavour to make all our events and activities as inclusive as possible, with accessibility at the forefront of our minds - not as an afterthought.
