Chair of Trustees – Friends of The Connection

About The Friends

The Friends of The Connection is an independent charity which is run by volunteers with the support of a part time administrator.  The charity is dedicated to supporting the work of The Connection at St Martin’s with homeless and vulnerable people in central London. The money we raise goes to The Connection with very little spent on administration.  Our current membership is about 900 individuals registered as Friends living in the UK and abroad.  Of these around 600 are regular donors.  On average over the past five years, Friends have contributed around £350,000 every year to the work of The Connection, including legacies.

About the Role

The new Chair will be expected to take the lead in these continuing discussions recognising the role that the Friends can play in raising awareness of The Connection, generating income from an increased membership and through fundraising activities at a local and community level.

A key aspect of the role will be considering how to attract new Friends, especially younger people, either organically or via targeted routes. The Friends wishes to increase the amount of money it raises for The Connection and also to heighten awareness of the work of The Connection.  Discussions are taking place between both charities as to how this can best be achieved.  The new Chair will play a key role in those discussions.

The Role

In this volunteer role, you'll be responsible for assisting with fundraising activities and managing grants to ensure the financial stability of the organisation. Your tasks may include researching potential donors and grant opportunities, drafting grant proposals and fundraising appeals, managing donor communications, and tracking fundraising progress.

You'll collaborate closely with the CEO and other staff members to develop strategic fundraising plans and initiatives. Additionally, you may have the opportunity to participate in donor cultivation events, networking opportunities, and other fundraising activities to support our fundraising goals.

Fundraising and Grant Management Volunteers at Breck Foundation should possess a combination of skills, experience, and qualities to effectively support our fundraising efforts.

Skills:

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for drafting compelling grant proposals and donor communications.

• Organisational skills to manage donor databases, grant deadlines, and fundraising materials.

What difference will you make?

The Breck Foundation is a charity founded by Lorin LaFave after the tragic loss of her 14-year-old son, Breck Bednar, in 2014, through online grooming. Breck was groomed while enjoying his passions of computing and gaming. We want to ensure that no child is harmed through grooming and exploitation while enjoying their time on the internet. Prevention through education is essential.

Your contributions as a Fundraising and Grant Management Volunteer will have a direct and tangible impact on the safety of children and young people online. By helping to secure funding for our programs, you will be helping us continue to tell Breck’s story to schools, charities, businesses and youth organisations across the country.

We are looking to recruit a Project Control & Central Planning Manager who is able to use their experience to deliver success across both project control and central planning.

Role Overview

As Content Coordinator at Bank.Green, you will oversee the creation and management of content that educates and informs our audience on topics such as sustainable finance and investing, and the key but overlooked role of banks in climate change. This role is pivotal in ensuring that our content is engaging, informative, and aligns with our mission to promote more sustainable banking practices.

Commitment

The role requires a commitment of 5-8 hours per week. We are looking for somebody to come on long-term, but are open to shorter-term applicants.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate a team of article writers to ensure a steady output of high-quality content.
• Collaborate with the team to generate impactful story ideas relevant to sustainable finance and climate action.
• Organize biweekly calls to discuss content ideas, manage the content calendar, and review existing articles.
• Copyedit articles to ensure they meet our editorial standards and align with our strategic goals.
• Train new writers on using the Content Management System (CMS) and ensure they are proficient in publishing content.
• Maintain and organize the Notion workspace to ensure it serves as an effective home base for the content team.
• Act as a liaison between the content team and other departments to instruct on occasional website edits and updates.
• Work with People Operations to recruit new writers as needed.

Shannon Trust fulfils an unmet need around adult learning, supporting people who’ve fallen through the cracks in formal education.

We know a lot of people have had negative learning experiences in the past, so our programme is designed to be different, with no exams and no classrooms. Our unique, evidence-based Turning Pages reading manuals and Count Me In numeracy manuals are used by thousands of learners in prisons and the community to improve reading skills. 

Prison volunteers live near to their local prison so that they can visit about once a month during the working week to nurture the growth of the Shannon Trust in their prison. They help unlock the power of reading by offering advice, guidance, training and support to prison staff and prisoner mentors who help other prisoners to improve their skills 1 to 1.

We are looking for volunteers who are able to give a regular, reliable commitment for ideally two years and able to deliver engaging training to groups of people in prisons.  Volunteers do not need to be teachers or qualified traininers, full training will be given.  Due to the nature of the role, prison security vetting will be required.

We provide training for the role via e-learning and 4 training sessions which are a mix of live, online and group training

Climate Emergency UK’s free, online, 4-week Local Climate Training Programme is the place to start!

Councils have the power and influence over around 30% of emissions in their local area. Therefore, they are uniquely placed to make a real impact on emissions within their area. Following the success of the first-ever Council Climate Action Scorecards last year, Climate Emergency UK is looking to create the second edition of the Action Scorecards. But we know that councils can be taking more effective action as the average score in the 2023 Action Scorecards was only 32%. Now, we’re looking for volunteers to help us create the 2025 Council Climate Action Scorecards, tracking the progress that has been made, and scoring all UK councils on their climate action.

Cohort 2 - Late September-October 2024

Our workshops, alongside the practical experience of assessing local climate action, are designed to help you develop your knowledge, skills and experience around local climate policy and action. Your assessments will help create the 2025 Council Climate Action Scorecards - helping your community and other people around the UK understand how well councils are tackling the climate crisis, the progress that has been made, who’s doing well and what is possible. During the programme you will be part of a cohort of people (maximum 50) who share your passion for environmental justice and local action.

The Training Programme will help you understand:

• The powers local authorities have to tackle the climate crisis.
• The actions local authorities are taking to tackle the climate crisis.
• What good council climate action looks like. 

We will also have workshops from educational, policy and campaigning experts to give you a strong foundation in local climate action. Last year this included speakers from the Climate Change Committee, Lancaster City Council and Friends of the Earth. Those on the training programme will be able to manage their time but must be able to make the mandatory dates, listed below. Both cohorts will be 4 weeks and have the exact same programme of events. While these will be part of the training it will be up to you to make the session, although some of these sessions will be recorded. A full schedule will be sent out 1 week before the training starts.

Programme Dates

We are running two cohorts of the training programme: The First Cohort is deadline has passed. The Second Cohort will run from late 17th September to 22nd October 2024.

You will need to be free for the following mandatory dates:

• Scorecards Volunteer Inductions: You will need to attend one induction session on either Tuesday 17th or Thursday 19th September 2024 from 5:30 to 6:30pm. 
• Scorecards Scoring Training: You will only need to attend only one of the training sessions but please keep both of the evenings free until you are allocated a Scorecards section, which will determine which session you need to attend: either Tuesday 24th or Thursday 26th September. You will need to be available from 5:30-7pm.
• Policy Programme Course sessions will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1st - 22nd October for about 1 hour 30 minutes between 4-7pm (times vary a tiny bit each week)
• Final Handover & Certificate Ceremony Tuesday 22nd October, 5:30-6:30pm

The Second Cohort will run from late September to mid-October 2024. If you are interested in joining the second cohort you can already do so. 

Who is this Programme for? In order to apply you must be:

• Aged over 18
• Able to commit to approx. 15-20 hours a week for four weeks
• Based anywhere in the UK
• Have reliable internet access and access to a computer
• You do not need to have previous environmental related experience or a relevant degree. 

Note: We will not accept current Councillors or Officers. Parish/Town councillors or staff are welcome to apply.

Other than that, anyone can apply to be on this programme. We are particularly looking for people who:

• Are passionate about tackling climate change and sustainability
• Have an interest in supporting climate action in their local communities
• Are interested in a career in environmental policy or advocacy (or just enjoy this as a hobby!)
• Able to use Google Docs and SLACK. Although you will receive training in both. 

Each cohort will be limited to 50 places and we expect to fill the programme. Your acceptance onto the programme will be confirmed once you have attended the Group Interview.

Across the UK, our 270 local groups play a vital part in supporting people affected by MS. They provide sense of belonging, unity and friendship. And they deliver services and support for their local MS community.

We are looking to recruit a Communications Volunteer for the Plymouth and Tamar Valley Group. As our Communications Volunteer you’ll make sure people know they have a local MS Society group to turn to.

In this role you’ll be able to develop your writing skills, and gain an experience of communicating across a range of digital channels. 

Time commitment

We estimate this role will need around 2 hours a week. Our roles are flexible and aim to fit around you. Time commitments for this role may vary depending on your activities. This is an ongoing role.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.

You’ll have an interest in the MS Society and the work that we do, as well as the enthusiasm to represent both us and our values locally. You will understand the needs of people affected by MS in your area and be sympathetic to the needs and motivations of volunteers. You’ll be confident using Microsoft Office, the internet and email. Reprieve works with the most disenfranchised people in society, as it is in their cases that human rights are most swiftly jettisoned and the rule of law is cast aside. About the roles

Our new Trustees will be passionate about our vision and mission and will be able to bring inclusive and knowledgeable insight to the Board and the Executive Directors. They will have a passion for seeking justice for the victims of extreme human rights abuses. They will support our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion at Reprieve and share our commitment to fighting against racism and advancing racial justice, both in our work and within Reprieve.

Trustee 

We are seeking a new trustee with direct or indirect lived experience of some of the conditions and difficulties faced by beneficiaries of Reprieve’s work or other victims of human rights abuses. This could include long term or arbitrary detention or other human rights abuses, whether or not Reprieve would have been able to have been involved.

Trustee and Chair of the Development Committee

We are seeking a new trustee who would look to take on the Chair of our Development Committee when the current Chair retires in April 2025. You will be someone who has experience as a senior fundraising volunteer or who is well networked and happy to connect us with your contacts and make asks on behalf of Reprieve. Reprieve has a highly diverse funding base, built up over many years, and you would help support this by working with our Philanthropy and Events team to maximise support from individuals.

About Cruse

Cruse is Britain’s oldest and largest bereavement charity. In the Midlands, Cruse brings together more than 500 volunteers to helped support bereaved people, through a mix of individual and group sessions.

Cruse volunteers all pass through the same training process. Some volunteers are trained or trainee counsellors, whilst others have bereavement experience or put their listening skills to practice in helping people through their grief journey.

Cruse Worcestershire

The well-established Cruse branch of Worcestershire is seeking a Volunteer Chair. This active branch has 30 volunteers and can be supporting approximately 100 bereaved people at any one time. The volunteer team predominantly support service users via phone or Zoom, but does have outposts across the area. The team meet for regular forums and also hold in-person meetings, to socialise and cover learning topics specific to the work.

The role

The branch is looking for a Volunteer Chair. This role of Chair will be stimulating and call on your strategic and interpersonal skills.

It provides an opportunity to work alongside an experienced and diverse team of volunteers and staff in a rapidly changing environment to make a real difference to the people of Worcestershire.

The Chair provides a focal point for the branch, representing the volunteers and delivering a sense of cohesion to the volunteer group, championing their priorities and supporting key activities like learning, social events and fundraising.

The role is not remunerated. However, reasonable expenses incurred in carrying out the role will be repaid.

Time Commitment

· The Branch Forum meets approximately 8 times a year for 1.5 hours in the evening (7pm – 8.30pm).

· Monthly operations-focused meetings with the volunteer administrators/part-time staff approx. every 6 weeks.

· Ad hoc communication outside of formal meetings.

· Attendance of Cruse national meetings based on interest/focus

· 3 in-person group social/learning events each year

· Strong leadership skills and ability to motivate a team.

· Have some experience of personal loss.

· Strong inter-personal, networking and relationship building abilities.

· Previous Board experience, either within a charity or in a corporate setting.
