Do you want to help govern a charity that also runs Almshouses, alongside other trustees?
Do you have a focus on strategically-planning our accommodation for older people in Wokingham?
We are looking for a trustee to join one of our subcommittees, that looks after the provision and future of our Almshouses, as well as participate in our full Board of trustees.
As the oldest charity in England (formed in 1451) we want a new trustee to join our Board, to cooperatively govern our organisation alongside other trustees. Wokingham United Charities has a mission to relieve poverty and enhance the quality of life of those people in need in our community. We do this by our Almshouse accommodation, as well as using our funds to help alleviate financial distress, hardship and poverty.
Our usual income per annum is ~£700k, but we’ve been managing funds to help to relieve poverty in the midst of this cost-of-living crisis, and recently our turnover has been ~£1.5m. Of that, some £160k p.a. is income and usual expenditure for our Almshouses.
The role and what we are looking for in a new trustee
Trustees are the people who make the top-level decisions for our charity. Our Board includes people with experience and skills in governing our charity, and we’d expect our new trustee to have strong empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries. If you can think strategically and plan long-term, you have the primary skills we need.
Our Westende subcommittee meets every two months, and we want you to join this group, as well as becoming a trustee and thus joining the Board. The subcommittee devises and analyses plans for the Almshouses, as well as overseeing the operational delivery that is managed by our Westende Manager.
You don’t necessarily need prior experience of trusteeship, as full induction to our organisation and operations will be provided, plus specialist support for a new trustee, including access to external training.
We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We are looking for people from a variety of backgrounds and we’d like to expand the diversity of our Board, in all meanings, thus strongly welcome applications from people from less-represented groups.
We ask for approx. six hours of your time per month, which includes all meetings, discussions, etc. You will need access to digital communications, as much of our charity’s business is run that way.

We are seeking experienced trustees who can put use their knowledge and expertise into supporting the charity through an interesting period of transition.
We are seeking passionate individuals with specific knowledge and expertise in at least one of the following areas:
- Charity finance
- Charity and/or business development
- Legal knowledge
- Experience of social care and/or learning disabilities.
- Fundraising
- Marketing

Time commitment:

Artemis Studios Performing Arts Schools Limited is a Charity only Registered in March 2022, while our not-for-personal-profit organisation has been providing similar services in Bracknell since at least August 2014 and our roots go back locally to 2007. Role Summary
We are looking for a new Chair of Trustees who will offer strategic and supportive leadership to our highly effective, collaborative and committed Board. The Chair leads the board, ensuring that it governs the charity effectively, in service of the charity's vision and mission. The Chair leads in an inclusive way, supporting the Board to work together well, and providing support and challenge to the Chief Executive. The Chair is also an ambassador for the charity.
Chair role & responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership to the charity and the Board, ensuring that Glass Door achieves its mission with the interests of Glass Door's guests at its centre.
Work collaboratively with the CEO, staff and volunteers to achieve our mission and optimise the relationship between the Board and Glass Doors's staff and volunteers.
Provide leadership within the Board, ensuring that it fulfills its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation and promoting governance among fellow Trustees, providing clarity around boundaries between governance, management and operations.
Plan and chair the bi-monthly board meetings and the AGM, with colleagues as appropriate and liaise with the CEO, Company Secretary and Governance Trustee with regard to setting up meetings, agenda items and annual report content.
Facilitate meetings ensuring all have equal involvement in discussions, clarifying any uncertainties, confirming decisions made and actions to be taken and ensuring effective time management of meetings whilst providing appropriate periods of discussion and reflection.
Act as a spokesperson and figurehead for Glass Door when required.
Support Glass Door functions and events eg attendance at supporter events.
Support the Head of Fundraising & Major Donors with the cultivation of high-level donors, occassionally attending meetings where value can be added.
Represent the Board at staff Town Hall meetings.
Support the team liaising with partner churches and statutory authorities as required and be the public face of Glass Door in the local community.
Liaise with the CEO and he Board to keep an overview of the charity's affairs.
Provide supervision and support to the CEO as necessary in addition to planned monthly/bi-monthly 'catch up' meetings and, with the People Trustee, lead the CEO's annual performance review.
To act as final stage adjudicator for disciplinary and grievance procedures if required.
What we are looking for
Experience of being a Trustee, ideally in the third sector, and an understanding of the legal responsibilities and liabilities of a Trustee/Director.
A keen sense of strategic purpose.
Strong leadership skills, able to foster and promote a collaborative team environment and an inclusive and collaborative leadership style; able to inspire and support everyone to participate on an equal footing.
An ability to facilitate, mediate, influence and respect the confidences of colleagues. The ability to listen and engage effectively. You are comfortable with challenge and debate and are able to encourage that in others whilst fostering a collaborative board environment.
Excellent presentation and communication skills.
Advocate and ambassador - possess gravitas to lead the organisation and be able and willing to champion Glass Door.
Demonstrate a strong and visible passion and commitment to Glass Door's guests and ensure that the interests of our guests drive the decisions of the Board.
A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
A willingness to devote necessary time and effort to your duties as Chair and be available and responsive (e.g. when things sometimes 'come up' that require the Chair to advise, support or give consent to).

About DAISY
DAISY is a collection of disability and mental health focused arts organisations which promote and celebrate the great artistic work being created in Surrey. The organisation strives to develop the South East as the lead region in the UK for disability and deaf cultural activity, making Surrey a welcoming and inclusive place for all artists to practise. DAISY works with Disabled Artists and its member organisations to share skills and resources. We work with cultural partners across Surrey to put on exhibitions, create artworks and increase the awareness and status of Disability Arts.
The Role
In this voluntary role, you will be joining our five other Directors - Laura Jones (Co-Artistic Director of Stop Gap), Hayley Bull (CEO of Bloomin’ Arts) and Julie Hoyle (Artist) and Leah Zakss (Freelance Arts and Music Consultant), Cara Flowers (Artistic and Managing Director of DAISY) - to help DAISY to raise awareness of the incredible art being created in Surrey by Disabled Artists.
Having recently launched a number of new initiatives and under different management, DAISY is entering a new phase of its development and growth and as a Non-Executive Director, you will have the chance to make a real difference to the Disabled Artists we work with. We are looking for a number of people to join our board with, ideally, a background or interest in one or more of the following: finance, fundraising, organisational development, governance and the arts. DAISY is currently in the process of transforming from a Community Interest Company (CIC) with a board of Directors to becoming a registered charity (CIO). When this happens, the Directors will then become Trustees.
Potential profile:
● Our priority is to recruit someone with lived experience of a disability, in order to offer diverse perspectives and to represent the people we work with.
● Close connections with the County of Surrey or nearby.
● A passion for the Arts, ideally Disability Arts and/or Social Justice
● A clear understanding and alignment to our values of equality and inclusivity for all
● A big picture thinker with a collaborative approach who will understand the challenges of operating as part of a unified Board
As a Director of the DAISY board, you will be expected to meet every few months for an online meeting to discuss future decisions. What will you be doing?
Governing bodies are responsible for the strategic management of a school and will make decisions about a wide range of issues
The core responsibilities involved are:
- Ensuring accountability
- Providing support and challenge to the schools senior leadership team
- Monitoring and evaluating the school’s progress
- Budgetary allocation and control
- Shaping plans for school improvement and overseeing their implementation
- Setting the school’s aims and values
- Appointing senior members of staff including the Head Teacher
The governing body is usually split in to a small number of committees, each responsible for one area such as finance or pupil achievement. These committees will meet separately from the main governing body to discuss relevant issues in more detail. Discussion is then fed back at a full governing body meeting.
A school governing body is made up of representatives from the school, the parents, the local authority and the local community.
What are we looking for?
You don’t need any specific skills or experience to be a school governor. You must be over 18, but you don’t need to be a parent or have experience working in education. Often, it’s the outside perspective you can bring that a school needs.
Professional experience in areas such as HR, finance, law, or project management are all useful to a school. But soft skills such as leadership, communication, and problem solving are also great additions.
What difference will you make?
Governors make decisions that affect schools for years to come. Our recent impact survey found that our volunteers bring £9.9 million worth of value to schools each year, and 9/10 volunteers would recommend being a governor to a friend.
As a governor, you can visit the school to gain an understanding of the culture and ethos and to get the most out of the role. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet children, parents, and teachers, and see the impact of your work first-hand.

The Honorary Treasurer is a director of Healthwatch Bucks with specific responsibilities to:
1. Lead the Board in fulfilling its responsibility to protect the financial integrity of Healthwatch Bucks.
2. Provide support and guidance on financial matters to the Chief Executive and their Team.
3. Represent Healthwatch Bucks with key stakeholders as required.
Financial Integrity
The Honorary Treasurer leads the Board in protecting the financial integrity of Healthwatch Bucks by:
● Chairing the Finance Committee and, on its behalf, making recommendations to the Board.
● Keeping the Board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities, ensuring understanding of financial planning and budgeting and current and forecast finances.
● Monitoring and reporting the organisation’s financial health regularly to the Board in line with best practice, complying with its Articles of Association, financial legislation, statutory requirements, contractual obligations and necessary insurance cover.
● Ensuring that the organisation has and complies with up-to-date financial policies and processes including Risk Management, Reserves, Business Continuity and Financial Management & Internal Controls.
● Monitoring cash flow to ensure financial sustainability.
● Ensuring that financial transactions and reporting meet the conditions of contractual and other agreements with commissioners, funders, partners and sub-contractors.
● Acting as signatory or co-signatory in accordance with the scheme of delegation in the Financial Management and Internal Control processes.
● Presenting the financial accounts at the Annual General Meeting and overseeing the preparation of the accounts for statutory submission.
Support & Guidance
The Honorary Treasurer shares the duty of all Board Members to ensure effective policy making, strategic planning and monitoring of the performance of Healthwatch Bucks. Additionally, the Treasurer has specific responsibilities supporting the Chief Executive to ensure that:
● Financial planning processes are maintained and that available financial resources are appropriate to the aims of the organisation.
● Healthwatch Bucks has an effective strategy for generating and accounting for commissioned and donated income to achieve its objectives and manage its expenditure.
● The Board receives all necessary advice on the financial implications of strategic plans and projects.
● The Board is presented with budget statements, management accounts and financial information at all key points in the planning and budget cycle and that issues are outlined in a coherent and easily understandable way.
The Financial Management and Control Policy is kept up-to-date and implemented throughout the organisation.
● Proper procedures are followed for preparing, presenting and filing the annual financial statements.
● The recommendations of external financial advisors are reported to the Board and acted upon.
● Equipment and assets are appropriately recorded, depreciated, maintained and insured.
Representation
The Honorary Treasurer will, as appropriate:
1. Liaise with staff and contractors responsible for the financial activities of the organisation.
2. Represent Healthwatch Bucks with commissioners and sub - contractors, partners, Healthwatch England, bankers and members.
3. Act as a spokesperson or signatory for the organisation.
4. Liaise with the independent examiner on the annual management letter and related Board representation.
