What are we looking for?
Person Specification
Individuals are sought who have a strong empathy with any body image issues and related mental health concerns. Experience, skills and expertise in charity law, an interest in the well-being of people combined with an in-depth understanding of our work and ambitions are particularly sought.
Knowledge, skills and understanding:
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of governance experience within a board, ideally in the non-profit sector or a related field.
- Skills: Strong strategic thinking, leadership, and decision-making abilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge: A good understanding of the legal and financial responsibilities of a trustee and experience in risk management, strategic planning, and organisational oversight.
- Commitment: Ability to commit time for board meetings, committee involvement, and preparation work. Expected to attend quarterly board meetings and contribute to special projects as needed.
NB: Ideally you would need to attend quarterly trustee meetings in the Kingston Upon Thames area, but you are able to attend this remotely if required.

Been There is a charity in the form of an app that connects people aged 18 and over with a vetted and trained mentor to help with any body image issues they may be experiencing. Students4Students is a member led national organisation which has c.100 members split across 4 branches. As a CIO it has a duty to engage with members and provide members the opportunity to elect trustees and hold the leadership to account for decisions at an AGM. Historically these AGMs have been ill attended and election of Trustees have been decided by a small number of members who hold branch committee positions. Students4Students wants to improve the level of participation in our internal democracy and ensure that AGMs are appealing and relevant to all members.
The organisation also wants to increase engagement with its members, all year round, outside of the AGM. Students4Students is looking to build new channels of engaging with members, ensuring trustees and leadership are held to account throughout the year.
Responsibilities and duties

InCommon is a London-based charity bringing generations together to build connected, inclusive and age-friendly communities. We are looking for an experienced and credible senior health or social care professional with a strategic approach and knowledge of the current challenging environment - ideally in respect of disability and ageing - to join our Board of Trustees*. Our Vision is that ‘each and every beneficiary of the Trust has access to the resources and support they need to live their best life for the longest time’ and, as they enter the next phase of their lives and as their needs grow ever more complex, you will play an important role in ensuring we provide the best possible future for them.
The Thalidomide Trust is a unique organisation supporting 430 beneficiaries, now all aged in their 60s, born with disabilities as a result of their mother taking the drug, thalidomide, during pregnancy. Their physical disabilities include limb damage, hearing and visual impairment, brain and sensory impairment and damage to internal organs. They are a remarkable group of people, who have achieved a great deal despite often living with extreme levels of disability.
Our beneficiaries have very complex and varied needs which are increasing as they age, and we have gathered a wealth of data about them and gained an in-depth understanding of their evolving needs through our structured programme of three-yearly Holistic Needs Assessments (HNAs).
You will bring the following skills and experience to the role:
- Experience of operating at a senior level in a health and/or social care environment (this could be in policy, systems leadership or practice) with a high external profile and strong links with professional social care networks.
- Knowledge of current health and social care policy and provision and the implications for our beneficiaries as they age.
- Integrity, empathy and the ability to contribute to effective decision making in the best interests of all beneficiaries of the Trust.
You should also be willing and able to devote approximately 20 days (plus travel time) per annum to the Trust – and specifically be available to attend three full day board meetings, at least two half-day Health & Wellbeing Committee meetings and one beneficiary event each year.
This is a voluntary role, but reasonable expenses incurred will be reimbursed.

Thames Valley Partnership Trading as Hope After Harm is a Buckinghamshire based registered Charity and Charitable Company Limited by Guarantee of 30 years’ operating a range of support programmes across the Thames Valley - including support for victims, support for the families of offenders, early interventions, work in the field of domestic abuse and support to offenders. We are pleased to be offering an exciting new one-year attachment to The Old Vic Theatre Trust Board exclusively to one Lambeth resident aged 18–30.
The Lambeth Baylis Trustee provides a unique opportunity for a young person to discover how a Board of Trustees in an arts organisation works. Across the UK, less than 1.2% of Trustees are under 30 and 0.5% are aged 18–24.
The role aims to provide a specific youth viewpoint in relation to The Old Vic’s activities and strategy.
What is a Board of Trustees?
A Board of Trustees offers guidance and expertise to senior management. At The Old Vic, this means the Artistic Director, Executive Director and the Senior Leadership & Management Teams.
What is the time commitment?
Board meetings, of which you would be expected to attend at least three during your year, are normally held four times a year. In addition, you would be invited to attend theatre performances and fundraising events and have informal meetings with relevant members of the Management team. Attendance at these events is a key part of the role, particularly if you are to get the most out of the experience. Board memberships are voluntary, unpaid positions, however for the Lambeth Baylis Trustee, expenses will be covered.
What would make a good Baylis Trustee?

The Lambeth Baylis Trustee will undergo an onboarding programme to learn about the theatre and the work we do, as well as sessions to understand how a Board works before the first Board meeting.
The Lambeth Baylis Trustee will be appointed a “buddy” (Euan Borland, Education and Community Director), have opportunities to attend Old Vic events, shadow members of The Old Vic Management team and undergo any relevant training throughout the programme.
Are there any specific criteria?
The candidate must be a Lambeth resident aged between 18–30.

However, you should be willing to learn new skills and be able to devote approximately 15 to 20 days per annum to the Trust – within this time specifically be available to attend three full day Board meetings, at least four half-day Finance Committee meetings and one beneficiary event each year.

William Morris Society Trustee Recruitment (Treasurer-designate and LBHF resident)
The William Morris Society is recruiting for two new members to join our board of trustees – to contribute to the strategic direction and good governance of the charity as we head towards our milestone 70th anniversary.
Founded in 1955, the Society works to improve and diffuse knowledge of the life, work and influence of William Morris. This is achieved through an impressive programme of activity – including publication of a journal and a members’ magazine, delivery of in-house and high-profile guest speaker events, school and outreach opportunities and, not least of all, rolling exhibitions at our museum on the Thames in West London.
In 2024 the Society welcomed Tristram Hunt, Director of the V&A, as our new President and appointed for the first time a CEO to run the charity. New board members will join the Society at a time of rejuvenation and growth, although we remain a small organisation (with turnover <£150k) with the usual challenges facing the heritage and arts sectors.
The members of the Society comprise a fellowship of those interested in the very many diverse aspects of Morris’ life and artistic output – ranging from his famous wallpaper and tapestry designs, through his stained-glass and literary works, to his perhaps less-well known political activism. With something for everyone, we are a diverse membership – from across the UK and further afield.
We combine our broad and international appeal with a strong local presence in Hammersmith based on the contribution of Morris to the arts & crafts movement and grassroots politics during his time living at Kelmscott House – the Coach House of which is today run by the Society as a museum. We work with organisations across the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, including the Council from whom we receive an annual grant. To consolidate and further build our local connections we are recruiting for a resident of the community to join our board of trustees.
With our current Treasurer stepping down next year, we are also now recruiting for his successor. As Treasurer-designate, the successful candidate will have opportunity to work with and learn from the team, particularly with our finance officer, before stepping up to the role at our AGM in May 2025. For context, recent annual accounts can be viewed on the Charity Commission website.
We are keen to hear from all those with an interest in Morris and in supporting the work of the charity and who are either a) resident in the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham or b) have financial experience to support the Society as our next Treasurer. The board meets quarterly with subcommittee meetings in between – including the Finance & General Purposes Committee, of which the Treasurer is ex officio a member.
