We are a growing charity with a range of housing and support services across England and Scotland.

We have a history of innovation, 140 years old and counting, and in recent years we’ve built on our long history of providing support to disabled people, autistic people and providing specialist dementia services to support people with experience of homelessness and has become a leading provider of safe houses for people subject to modern-day slavery.
We are primarily funded through contracts with over 90 local authorities, Integrated Care Boards and UK government departments, though we are starting to invest in fundraising. We have worked hard to build our financial strength that in recent years has resulted in opening 27 new services, creating over 200 new jobs within the charity, resulting in 630 colleagues adding new stories to the legacy of the charity every day.
The quality is good too, with all of our regulated services rated as good or outstanding across all areas by the Care Quality Commission, and most importantly a focus on the quality of life of the people we are here to support.
We’re at the point of renewing our strategy and are looking for new Trustees who can bring skills and experience to a strong Board, particularly people with expertise in finance, governance, and fundraising with a focus on trusts, grants and foundations.
Who we are looking for
We want our Trustees to reflect the people and communities we are active in, and are always looking to increase the diversity of the Board; and to embed lived experience within our decision-making.
Our Board and colleagues are people from all religions and none, but they share our values. We are underpinned by catholic social teaching and would welcome applications from people who can help us strengthen the Board’s understanding in this area.
Successful candidates will be strategic, curious, ambitious and want to be part of our next period of growth, as we look to continue to innovate services for high-quality impact in the communities we support.
- Time Commitment
The Board meets four times a year for c.3 hours in Darlington; however, we are open to exploring new venues for in-person meetings. One of these meetings is our full-day strategy away day. Trustees all sit on a subcommittee, of which there are four: Quality, Finance, Audit & Risk, Governance, and the newly created Fundraising Committee. Committee Meetings are 4 times a year and tend to be held virtually.
We expect that with reading, calls, informal conversations and other ad hoc activities, the time commitment will be up to 1 day a month.

About the roles
Concordia is in an exciting period of strategic growth and change. They have ambitions to grow their impact through a new and additional strategic Pillar. This new Pillar will relate to their core purpose of giving people, particularly young people, transformative experiences and skills. Concordia’s third Pillar will support the diversification of income, expand its impact and strengthen its sustainability.
They have a strong board with diverse skills and trustees who have served multiple terms. With their ambition for expansion and strategic diversification, they need a new Chair who has the motivation, skills and commitment to lead the board and support the Executive and staff team through the next phase of their positive development and growth.
The new Chair needs to be someone with excellent chairing skills who can lead the Board and CEO through change. Strategic knowledge and influence, and an ambitious passion for supporting young people, international development and skills development are crucial too. They need to have credibility and bring gravitas to help represent Concordia and positively grow the reputation and value of the Charity, alongside the CEO. Most importantly, they need to be values-aligned, motivated and committed to the cause of supporting people to thrive and making global connections.
Trustees will have experience in the following areas:
- Safeguarding
- Human Resources (HR) to chair HR Committee
- Finance to chair
- Finance, Audit & Risk Committee
Who we are looking for
You will be a committed and well-motivated leader with cross-sector experience and understanding of the complexity of growing an organisation in partnership with the civil society and other partners. Experience on Boards, ideally as Chair, and a passion and willingness to learn and to develop others so that the board can thrive and support the executive and wider staff team.
All Trustees are encouraged to contribute actively to the Board of Trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to Concordia, in relation to specialist skills and role and setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets, and evaluating performance against agreed targets. Financial stability and protecting income, investment and the oversight of expenditure are the collective responsibilities of the board. Insuring against liability and ensuring compliance is also key. Support and line Management for the CEO is led by the Chair on behalf of the board, as is their regular performance review. The Chair also supports the recruitment and performance of Trustees.

Rainbow Hill Community Hub have invited Acorns to have a small craft and fundraising stall at the Christmas Community Day.
At Acorns we provide care and support for life limited or life threatened children and their families. We are a charity, and our fundraising is vital to enable us to continue providing care and support to the children: it costs around £13 million a year to run our care services.
What's involved?
We are looking for volunteers who can run a small craft stall with the children, no speacial skills required, however, resources will be provided. We will also be taking donations for Acorns Childrens Hospice.
Entry is provided as well as drinks throughout the day. There is also parking nearby.

The Coroners' Courts Support Service (CCSS) is a registered Charity whose trained volunteers give emotional and practical support to bereaved families and other witnesses attending an inquest.
We need volunteers to provide emotional support and practical help to bereaved families, witnesses and others attending Inquests at Coroners' Court. Our volunteers at court also provide help and assistance to the Coroners' Officers, as and when required.
We are looking for reliable, supportive people with excellent communication skills. A mature and calm attitude is needed in order to be able to talk to people during a sometimes bewildering and emotional experience. Volunteers must be willing to undergo a period of observations and shadowing, as well as attend a 3 day training course. A minimum commitment of one day (9:00am - 5:00pm) per fortnight is asked for. Training and mentoring is provided and travel expenses to the court are reimbursed.

Network meetings are held in Heanor on Wednesday evenings between 19:30-21:00 during school term time although these are normally reduced to twice monthly in winter. It is important for applicants to generally be able to attend these meetings.

Induction evenings will be held at same time and location as the regular meetings and an existing volunteer will provide direct support as a Buddy.

About the role
As a Trustee, you will have the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of unpaid carers, ensuring that our work aligns with our mission and that our resources are used wisely and effectively. You will join a Board with a strong mix of skills and experience, including finance, communications, business, and health and social care.
In this role, you will play a vital part in shaping the strategic direction and governance of the charity, helping us deliver support to unpaid carers effectively and sustainably. You will be part of a committed Board that meets quarterly and is supported by two committees: Finance & Risk and People & Governance, one of which you will join.
Using your expertise, you will advise on key issues, support new initiatives, and help the organisation innovate and grow. Your impact will be felt directly by the carers we support, ensuring our services remain inclusive and accessible, our resources are managed responsibly, and our work continues to make a meaningful difference in carers’ lives.

- Time Commitment

Trustees should expect to commit the equivalent of circa one day a month for meetings, preparation, Board development, engagement with staff and carers, recruitment activities, professional development, and occasional public events.

The Role
We are looking for friendly, reliable volunteers to join our sorting area team. You’ll be helping us process generous donations from our local community, ensuring items are prepared and ready to sell in our shops.
What you’ll do:
- Sort through donated items such as clothing, toys, books, and homeware
- Check the quality and suitability of donations
- Prepare items for display in our shops
- Work as part of a supportive, welcoming team
