Join Bright Futures Ten Thousand Futures Campaign Board and positively change the story for over 10,000 young people disadvantaged through long-term illness, every year.
Location: London/UK Wide
Every morning in the UK, thousands of children wake not to the bustle of a school day, but to the quiet of their bedrooms or hospital wards. For many, long-term illness has turned what should be years of learning, laughter and growth into years of absence and isolation. Bright Futures UK exists to change this story. Founded in 2016 by Josh Pelled, whose own education was shattered by childhood cancer, we are the only UK charity dedicated to helping young people return to education during or after illness.
For every child we support, there are dozens waiting, unseen and unsupported. By 2029, we aim to change that by helping 10,000 children annually – around 3-4% of the national cohort. Our focus will be on those from disadvantaged backgrounds, for whom the barriers are highest and opportunities most limited.
The Campaign
To deliver this vision, we are launching Ten Thousand Futures – a bold strategy for growth at our 10th anniversary. To succeed, we need to raise £4 million over the next four years. We have carefully modelled this planned growth. The investment will expand our network of skilled volunteers to meet demand, grow tutoring, mentoring and befriending into a national programme, strengthen our long-term impact measurement, and secure sustainable growth so that every child who needs us can access our personalised support.
Join our Campaign Board
Bright Futures stand at a pivotal moment. The need has never been greater, and the opportunity to make a generational difference has never been clearer.
The Campaign Board will be a group of philanthropically minded and well-connected individuals who, with the support of the professional team, help to raise the lion’s share of income for the campaign through their networks. The Board will ensure that no child facing illness is left behind. Together, we can build ten thousand brighter futures every year and give young people back their education, their confidence, and their future.
Josh Pelled will work closely with the Campaign Board, which will also be supported by the Charity’s Board of Directors.
From tutoring and mentoring to befriending and in-hospital workshops, the programmes are designed to meet each young person’s unique needs with care, flexibility and understanding.
Every day, you will work alongside a passionate team, incredible volunteers and inspiring young people. Together, you can prove that illness should never define a future – and that every young person deserves the chance to learn, thrive and reach their potential.

Bring your professional expertise in the area of inclusion and join them in realising their vision to create positive futures for their learners, community and region.
Applications close at 9 a.m. Friday 21st November
Located in a semi-rural location, high on the edge of the Pennines, Derwentside College is based on a single site in the heart of the town of Consett. We offer a diverse range of provision to young people and adults from across the local, predominantly rural, community. We currently deliver education and training to around 4,000 learners across over 200 courses, supported by around 170 staff.
About the role
Our priorities for the future are:
- Leadership, Governance & People
 - Curriculum
 - Learners
 - Partnerships
 - Resources & Investment

Our Board is led by our Chair, David Allsop, who has worked tirelessly with our Principal & CEO, Chris Todd, and other colleagues across our leadership team and board to refocus our direction and culture, and to grow our aspirations as a college.
Given the depth of our ambitions, we are now seeking to recruit further governors to our board. We are now welcoming applications from individuals with professional expertise in inclusion who can bring a new set of questions to ensure we remain a college serving everyone in our community and wider region.
Who we are looking for
To achieve our organisational aims, our Board must continue to consist of experts and experienced professionals who can provide the appropriate levels of challenge and questioning to enable us to grow, develop and improve.
Following a recent successful governor recruitment process and subsequent consideration of the expertise we need across our Board, we have identified that the area of inclusion is a priority for us. We seek candidates who can bring their professional expertise to scrutinise our practice and offer insights on how we can be more innovative in this area of our delivery.
We will welcome candidates from all manner of professional settings, but would be particularly interested in those who are delivering inclusion strategies in educational and charity settings.

Time commitment: 10 hours per month
We ask our Board Members to commit to a four-year term of office. Appointed individuals will need to be able to attend five Corporation Board meetings per year, including our strategic away day in May. Board meetings take place on a Tuesday in person at the College and usually outside of the working day.
We estimate that our Governors dedicate around 10 hours per month to their roles, although with this particular focus, we may ask the appointed candidate to take on a ‘link governor’ role, which at times will lead to a need for greater time commitments.
Whilst previous governance experience is welcomed, it is not essential. All new governors are supported through a comprehensive induction and training process, with ongoing support thereafter.

Every day, disabled people who rely on highly trained assistance dogs face unnecessary barriers. From being refused entry to shops and restaurants, to navigating confusing legal protections. You will be confident in influencing, communicating clearly, and making an active contribution. The ability to draw on your networks to support the panel’s work is also valuable.
