Health, Medical Volunteer Roles

As an office volunteer, you’ll play a vital role supporting our small fundraising team with administrative and office related duties.

In this role, no two days will be the same! You may be inputting data, making telephone calls, packing and sending out letters, counting donations, preparing stock for events or contacting fellow volunteers to fill our events rota.

As a office volunteer, you will be expected to:

• Represent Magpas Air Ambulance in a respectful and friendly manner.
• Understand the work of Magpas Air Ambulance to secure basic knowledge and enthusiasm for our service.
• Wear your Magpas Air Ambulance ID badge while volunteering, ensuring it's visible at all times.
• Have good communication skills and be able to work with other volunteers and staff as part of a team.
• Have an eye for detail and a flexible attitude.
• Have a good understanding of computers (Microsoft Office) or the willingness to learn.
• Follow all Magpas Air Ambulance policies and procedures, including reporting any accidents and incidents.
• Recognise, respond to, and report any safeguarding issues or concerns.

As a collection tin volunteer, you will play a vital role in supporting us to raise our profile and fundraise within your community.

You will look after the Magpas Air Ambulance collection tins within a designated area, replacing full tins and returning them to an agreed location. You can also help us by finding new locations in which to place tins. These collection tins are an important part of how we raise money, raising approximately £20,000 per year.

As a collection tin volunteer, you will be expected to:

• Represent Magpas Air Ambulance in a respectful and friendly manner
• Understand the work of Magpas Air Ambulance, having basic knowledge and enthusiasm for our service
• Wear your Magpas Air Ambulance ID badge, ensuring it's visible at all times
• Travel to your collection tins (on two or four wheels). Where motorised vehicles are used, you must hold a full UK driving license, have a road-worthy vehicle with up-to-date road tax, MOT certificate (where applicable) and fully comprehensive insurance.
• Establish the regularity of required tin collections in your area, keep a log of your activities and feedback to the Supporter Care Officer
• Proactively replace full collection tins as needed and deliver them to an agreed location within one working day of collection
• Place new tins in locations within your area, ensuring they are accurately labelled with the location and organisation's name
• Inform the Supporter Care Officer of any new tins placed or any changes, helping us to ensure records are accurate and kept up to date
• Follow all Magpas Air Ambulance policies and procedures, including reporting any accidents and incidents
• Recognise, respond to, and report any safeguarding issues or concerns

We have 250 local groups which play a vital part in supporting people affected by MS across the UK. They provide sense of belonging, unity and friendship. And they deliver services and support for their local MS community.

We are looking to recruit a Group Coordinator for our Lothian-wide group. As our local Group Coordinator you’ll take the lead in making sure your local group works as effectively as possible. You’ll recruit, induct and support other group volunteers to make sure your group’s activities meet the needs of your local MS community. In this role you’ll be able to develop your leadership, management, communication, organisation and motivation skills. 

Time Commitment

We estimate this role will need around 5 hours a week. Our roles are flexible and aim to fit around you. Time commitments for this role may vary depending on your activities. This is an ongoing role.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.

About you

You’ll have an interest in the MS Society and the work that we do, as well as the enthusiasm to represent both us and our values locally. You will understand the needs of people affected by MS in your area and be sympathetic to the needs and motivations of volunteers. You’ll be confident using Microsoft Office, the internet and email. You’ll be able to apply disability, equality and inclusion practices and understand and apply our risk management system. Ideally you’ll understand the local area and organisations that provide local services.

You will be reliable and easy to contact and you need to live in or near the Lothian-wide area to carry out this role.

As an event volunteer you will play a vital role by raising awareness of our services, assisting with fundraising and engaging with the local community.You will represent Magpas Air Ambulance at a wide range of events indoors and outdoors, come rain or shine. You may be assisting with car parking, meeting and greeting, setting up a stall, selling merchandise, engaging the public and answering questions. Magpas Air Ambulance have a presence at over 150 events each year and need reliable, friendly people like you to help us achieve this. At larger events you will be supported by an event lead and we'll always make sure you are prepared and confident, you don't need to have previous experience, just be willing to get stuck in!

As an event volunteer, you will be expected to:

• Represent Magpas Air Ambulance in a respectful and friendly manner.
• Understand the work of Magpas Air Ambulance to secure basic knowledge and enthusiasm for our service.

You will greet visitors at the centre, addressing any needs whilst giving exceptional customer service. Why am I needed?

Community is at the heart of everything that we do at Tenovus Cancer Care to help those affected by cancer. Our aim is simple – to deliver a vision where fewer people get cancer and those that do receive equal access to excellent treatment. However, we can’t do this without your help. Our shops in local communities are crucial to us raising vital funds. So, we’d like you to volunteer your time and commitment to help us make a difference. We need you to help sort, value and display our book donations in our shops to help turn them into cash.

What will I be doing?

Sorting through our book donations and pricing them ready for sale

Researching interesting books online on sites such as eBay, Amazon and Abe Books to value them for sale in the shop

Displaying the books on the shop floor ensuring books are rotated regularly to increase sales

Enlisting help from local auction houses when needed

Speaking with customers, making them welcome and answering queries

Promoting awareness of the charity and the services that we provide.

What skills do I need?

It’d be great if you have some knowledge of or interest in books, know what to look out for with book publishing dates etc.

A really keen eye for detail and ability to cross reference items across a number of websites to provide the most realistic valuation

Ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team

Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the team and customers.

Ability to use computer for research

You may need to handle bags and donations from the public and there may be stairs to climb depending on which shop you are based in. If you have any concerns about this, please speak with the Shop Manager when expressing your interest in volunteering.  

How much time do I need to commit?

We’d need you to give around three hours per week if you can with the possibility to do more if you’d like to. However, we appreciate any time you’d like to give; please let us know this on your application form. All we ask is that you give the same hours each week and that you let us know as soon as you can if you’re not able to make it. This’ll help us to plan our week.

What support will I be given?

Before starting with Tenovus Cancer Care, we ask that you do try a small number of hours in the shop so we can both see how the role may suit you. The amount of hours can be decided between you and the Shop Manager.

Following that the Shop Manager and team will be on hand to run you through the basics of helping in a shop in your first few days and they’ll always be on hand after that.

We're extending the opening hours of our Family Support Centre, so families experiencing childhood cancer have access to more support services. We're looking for a volunteer to support the Family Support Team at the Weekend to deliver crucial support to our families.

Purpose of the Role and Key Activities

Families who have been affected by children’s cancer come to our Family Support Centre, known as The Square, to access a variety of support services. We’re looking for a volunteer to join the team and support our Family Support Coordinator make sure families feel welcomed and supported while at The Square.

• Making drinks for families and visitors
• Answering the telephone, transferring calls and taking messages 
• Making bookings and updating our database 
• Keeping the reception area clean and tidy 
• Setting up rooms for meetings and events 

We are looking for a volunteer who: 

• Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills 
• Have experience of working in a customer service environment 
• Are confident, friendly and approachable 
• Have a fun and positive outlook
• Are proactive and able to use own initiative 
• Have good IT skills and experience of using a database 
• Are able to move furniture (tables and chairs) and boxes
• Are able to climb multiple flights of stairs 
• Are able to maintain professional boundaries and follow Candlelighters Policies and Procedures. 

This role is subject to an enhanced criminal record check, which is processed through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Why am I needed?

Community is at the heart of everything that we do at Tenovus Cancer Care to help those affected by cancer. Our aim is simple – to deliver a vision where fewer people get cancer and those that do receive equal access to excellent treatment. However, we can’t do this without your help. Our shops in local communities are crucial to us raising vital funds. So, we’d like you to volunteer your time and commitment to help us make a difference. We need you to help sort, value and display our book donations in our shops to help turn them into cash.

What will I be doing?

Sorting through our book donations and pricing them ready for sale

Researching interesting books online on sites such as eBay, Amazon and Abe Books to value them for sale in the shop

Displaying the books on the shop floor ensuring books are rotated regularly to increase sales

Enlisting help from local auction houses when needed

Speaking with customers, making them welcome and answering queries

Promoting awareness of the charity and the services that we provide.

What skills do I need?

It’d be great if you have some knowledge of or interest in books, know what to look out for with book publishing dates etc.

A really keen eye for detail and ability to cross reference items across a number of websites to provide the most realistic valuation

Ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team

Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the team and customers.

Ability to use computer for research

You may need to handle bags and donations from the public and there may be stairs to climb depending on which shop you are based in. If you have any concerns about this, please speak with the Shop Manager when expressing your interest in volunteering.  

How much time do I need to commit?

We’d need you to give around three hours per week if you can with the possibility to do more if you’d like to. However, we appreciate any time you’d like to give; please let us know this on your application form. All we ask is that you give the same hours each week and that you let us know as soon as you can if you’re not able to make it. This’ll help us to plan our week.

What support will I be given?

Before starting with Tenovus Cancer Care, we ask that you do try a small number of hours in the shop so we can both see how the role may suit you. The amount of hours can be decided between you and the Shop Manager.

Following that the Shop Manager and team will be on hand to run you through the basics of helping in a shop in your first few days and they’ll always be on hand after that.

Becoming a volunteer with Tenovus Cancer Care can be a rewarding experience and is certainly invaluable to the charity and its goals.
