JOB DESCRIPTION
Why we need your help
The Marie Curie Dementia Befriending service is provided by trained volunteers who offer one-to-one companionship and support to people with a terminal illness that have dementia and their families. The service would not be able to reach those most in need if it was not for the commitment and hard work of the volunteers delivering the service.
Befriender volunteers provide companionship and emotional support, practical support, short breaks for carers and help with signposting for information and support.
What we need you to do
Your role will include, some of, but not restricted to the following tasks:
- Complete all initial mandatory Dementia Befriender volunteer training, as well as any refresher training whilst you are a Marie Curie volunteer
- Carry out weekly visits with the person(s) you’re supporting, as agreed with the Volunteer Co-ordinator. This could be in a variety of settings, for example in a family’s home, in a care home or out in the community.
- Provide one to one companionship and support. For example - Offering a listening ear and spending time engaging in everyday conversation, activities or hobbies with the person you are supporting. Accompanying them to an appointment, social groups or taking short trips out. Helping with small daily tasks eg making tea or accessing the internet. Allowing carers to have a short break. Signposting to relevant local support services or finding out information as requested.
(This list is only an outline as support will vary according to the needs of those using the service. Dementia Befriender volunteers do not provide nursing or personal care, or offer counselling or advice)
- Driving clients to pre-arranged health or social care (eg to chemotherapy appointments or day therapy at the hospice)
- Follow all mandatory procedures that form part of the Dementia Befriending service. Examples include submitting written report forms, identifying and briefing a lone worker Buddy, and following procedures for lone worker safety.
- Keep your manager informed of any changes to the situation, or any significant happenings in connection to the person you’re supporting and/or their family, either in person or by phone
- Be reliable and committed to regularly spending time with someone and offering support
- Attend group events and training sessions for Marie Curie Dementia Befriender volunteers
- Attend individual sessions with your Volunteer Co-ordinator as required
- Represent the Marie Curie Dementia Befriending service positively to those using the service
- Support with Advanced Care Planning for clients
What skills or experience do you need?
- Commitment and reliability - able to keep appointments and volunteer for approximately 3 hours a week
- Patience, empathy and emotional stability
- An understanding of the importance of confidentiality
- Willing to be flexible to the needs of the individual
- Ability to operate within the boundaries of the role
- A friendly and sensitive approach

As the Secretary for our Board of Trustees, you are part of a team providing a vital support function in your local community, ensuring a dignified experience to anyone visiting or anyone who comes into contact with Irlam and Cadishead foodbank.
Key Tasks:
As a Trustee:
- Work with the other trustees to provide management support and direction.
- Ensure that the foodbank meets legal and best practice standards; in the care of clients and volunteers, as a registered charity, carrying out our purpose towards stopping hunger in our local area, complying with our governing document and the law, and managing our resources.
- Liaise with the Trussell Trust on a rotating basis with the other Trustees.
- Understand the working of the foodbank distribution centres, warehouse and donations and attend at least 2 sessions a year.
As Secretary of Trustees:
- Ensure that there is a record of all Trustee Board correspondence
- Ensure that arrangements for Trustee meetings are communicated to the rest of the board, including when and where, inviting trustees to send agenda items and providing to the board with previous meeting minutes in good time prior to the meeting.
- Ensure that Trustees use and implement the NCVO Governance Wheel to ensure we meet best practice for charity governance.
- Ensure decisions and policy creation/adaption are clearly recorded in formal minutes, with who will do what and when as agreed by the Trustee board.
- Ensure formal minutes are taken, produced and distributed to the rest of the trustees in good time, as well as ensuring previous meeting minutes are signed by the chair once approved by the trustee board.
- Check that actions have been taken following decisions at previous meetings.
- Ensure the trustee board meets its legal obligations, including reporting, meeting charity and company law, as well as insurance requirements.
- Ensure all relevant stakeholders are informed of the Annual Membership Meeting (AMM)
- To ensure that the annual report (to go alongside annual accounts) is produced and sent to the Charity Commission of England & Wales.

We are looking to recruit a Support Volunteer for the Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Group. As our local group Support Volunteer you’ll help people affected by MS find information about local and national services. In this role you’ll be able to develop your listening and communication skills, as well as your knowledge of local services. Most importantly you’ll help people affected by MS to access the help they need.
Time commitment

Activities coordinator in our Live Smart independent living scheme for over 50s.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, reliable and compassionate volunteer with good interpersonal skills and a desire to help others. Experience of working with older people, with a kind caring nature, and an understanding of resident’s needs.
Activities include:
- Organising activities such as a board games afternoon, craft club and trips out.
- Communicating with the residents to find out the activities they would like to do.
- Arranging for visitors to come in to do activities, or talks.
- Encouraging residents to join in activities.
Skills and requirements:
- Experience of working with older people, with a kind caring nature, and an understanding of resident’s needs.
- An ability to organise activities, offering new ideas and initiatives. Experience with crafts or games skills would be an advantage.
- Able to liaise with the manager who will be able to support advertising the activities to all residents
- Required to have a Driving License and Car
Practical Considerations:
- Required to live locally, as local knowledge is key to this role.
- Volunteers receive a thorough induction and have access to any relevant in-house and external training.
- Volunteers have a named supervisor providing day-to-day support and encouragement.
-Reasonable travel and lunch expenses with be reimbursed
- A DBS check will be required for this role.
Commitment:
Commitment can be flexible to suit your availability, from about 1-2 hours per week. The commitment may increase as more residents become interested in activities, but a maximum should be 4 hours per week. Ideally this volunteer will commit to a minimum of 4 months.

Marie Curie and Musgrove Park Hospital have joined together to offer a service to support people at the end of life.
Spending time with patients and/or their relatives, we’re looking for volunteers to provide emotional support, a listening ear, and to simply be there for people at this very difficult time.
Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks:
- Support patients in line with agreed boundaries and procedures
- end time listening and talking with patients, family, friends and carers.
- Signpost families and friends to other services, as appropriate
- Write and submit, to the Service Manager, a brief report on each visit
- Keep the Service Manager informed of any changes or significant happenings in connection with the client, either in person or by telephone
- Be an active part of the team of Marie Curie Companions and the wider team of MPH volunteers
- Attend regular group support and development sessions for Marie Curie Companions
- Attend individual sessions with the Service Manager, as required.

Feel confident in sharing their story and listening to others in an open and sensitive way.
Engage with local community groups/services to raise awareness of the range of Marie Curie support services (including our national services)
Help us to promote and support initiatives around awareness days including National Day of Reflection and other awareness weeks in your local area.
Identify and connect with local community groups to understand more about what they offer and how we can work together
What does the role involve?
Below is an idea of some of the activities that may be involved with this role:
Engage with local citizens to listen to and learn from their experiences of end-of-life care and bereavement support and share what you learn with the local Marie Curie team.
Engage with local organisations to understand their support offer, and to represent the perspectives of people living with, or caring for someone, with a terminal illness, or who have been bereaved.
Attend local community events, to speak with the public about their views and promote Marie Curie services, for example Pride.
Distribute and restock posters, leaflets, and literature.
Act as the eyes and ears on the ground and feedback to MC
Support the local team during specific engagement initiatives e.g., completing questionnaires with members of the public and co-facilitating community forums.
Provide a good geographical spread across the relevant local area, spending time in your local community to truly understand the culture and support available.
Available to meet regularly with the Community Engagement Team both online and face to face.

The Afghanistan and Central Asian Association (ACAA) is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to support refugees and asylum seekers in learning English in its project in Lambeth.
Who we are:
ACAA works to empower and support refugees and asylum seekers by providing vital services that enable successful integration. These include English classes, mentoring, drop-in advice sessions, a legal surgery, employment and education training, counter-extremism workshops and youth and women's engagement services.
Role Summary:
Working as part of a small dynamic ESOL teaching team, responsibility for lesson planning and delivery will be shared between yourself and more experienced teachers. You will have the opportunity to shadow teachers and gain practical teaching experience before leading lessons. Classes meet in-person in Lambeth on evenings weekdays.

We are now looking for new Trustees to join us to help shape our future. The Board of Trustees work with Age UK BPED Chief Executive Officer to agree the strategic vision and mission and guide the charity towards achieving its goals.
What will you be doing?
We operate in a challenging environment. As with all charities working in adult social care, budgets have been tightened and we need to ensure that we continue to deliver high quality services in difficult times. It is an exciting time for the charity as we look to grow our Health & Wellbeing Services as well as reopening our Day Services provision and further develop our Dementia Services.
As a Trustee you will work in partnership with your fellow Trustees and the Chief Executive Officer to agree the long-term vision and strategic objectives of the charity which will include how best to enhance our services and make best use of our assets and investments. Your role as Trustee is also to ensure that the Charity complies with the necessary charitable and company governance frameworks. You will need to be able to devote time to attend the Board meetings which take place bimonthly from 6pm -8pm (usually on a Tuesday).

We are looking for Trustees who have a strong empathy with our mission and values, are collegiate in approach and are comfortable working with others to develop a strategy that will deliver positive change and ultimately will make Bournemouth, Poole, and East Dorset a great place to live in later life. At MHA Communities East Surrey we support older people to live independently in their own homes and communities. We offer a variety of social activities and services for people aged 55 and over. We currently need Befrienders in Reigate, Horley, Banstead, Redhill and surrounding areas.
Some of our MHA community members are socially isolated and feeling lonely. As a Befriender you’ll be matched with a member and visit them regularly in their own home to bring friendship, company, and a chance to chat. You may also offer practical support such as; reading a newspaper or their favourite book or accompany the member shopping or to a recreational activity.

The Marie Curie Community Hub is a new and exciting hub located right in the centre of the bustling Gloucester Road in Bristol. We are looking for volunteers to support running and developing a calendar of activities and events run from the hub, if you love talking to new people then this may be the right volunteering role for you.

It is also a space for small fairs and stall events to support local businesses in the community, as well as hosting events such as drop in carers cafes which provides the opportunity for carers to meet in a friendly setting and chat over a cuppa.
We are looking for volunteers to help with supporting the organisation and delivery of activities in the Community Hub and assisting members of the public in finding the support and information they need via our in-house Support Line space.
Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks:
Welcome and chat to customers; offering a listening ear to those looking for support and or information
Signposting individuals to Information and Support services as appropriate
Support the organisation and delivery of community activities in the hub’s community space
Raising awareness and promoting hub activities outside of the hub environment
Support with scheduling the different events hosted in the hub
Support with the marketing of the hub and its calendar of events
Community engagement and building relationships locally
