Who we are

Imagine, for a moment, going to your local library and finding that just seven out of a hundred books are in the format you can read.

Imagine you are a child excited about an author’s new book about a schoolboy wizard, and it’s all the kids at school can talk about, but following an overnight queue, you find it isn’t published for people like you.

Imagine being one of Britain’s more than 10 million children and adults who cannot read printed books. This is a “print disability”, and we – Calibre Audio, exist to support and help by providing a much-loved audiobook service for the visually impaired, those with dyslexia and other print-disabled people.

Our services started with cassettes of just ten books for 12 members, and 50 years on, we now have in excess of 16,500 titles for our 12,000 members.

For five decades, we have been on a mission to unlock the world of stories and learning for those who find reading printed books challenging.

During the last few years, we have invested heavily in improving services and making our organisation more efficient. These investments include new streaming services via the web, through partner apps, developing an Alexa Skill, additional content such as podcasts and book reviews, and developing our staff and board to improve our diversity.

We are in an exciting period of growth and development as a charity, and our new Trustee will join us at a fantastic time.

Throughout 2024, we’re running an exciting programme of activities to reflect on our past achievements as we celebrate our 50th anniversary — and we will launch our new strategy for the future to ensure we reach even more people who can benefit from our service.

We want to engage with younger members of our community and make as many books as possible available on as many platforms as possible, including other partner apps and smart speakers.

Who we are looking for

We seek a strategic and visionary financially qualified leader who can support and challenge us. In the summer of 2025, our new Trustee will take over chairing our Finance Committee when our current Treasurer ends his term.

We are excited to invite first-time Trustees to the board; you do not need trustee or non-executive experience. We are keen to ensure our board reflects the people we work with and our society.

We need skilled, motivated, and brilliant people who can help us achieve our vision of an inclusive society where everyone with a reading disability can enjoy accessible books.

Time commitment

You will attend four board meetings a year in Buckinghamshire with an option to attend virtually.

Initially, you will be a member of our Finance Committee, and when our current Treasurer ends their term in 2025, you will take over chairing our Finance Committee, which meets online for up to an hour every month.

We have an annual strategy away day once a year, and Trustees are invited to attend events throughout the year.

The overall time commitment, including reading board papers, preparation for board meetings and ad hoc advice and support to the executive team, is half a day a month (c.6 days per year), spread across the above commitments.

West Kirby School & College is seeking to appoint a Trustee with Responsibility for Finance

Commitment: Around 12 days per year

Role Overview: A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a high calibre and committed Trustee with responsibility for Finance to join our Governing Board and vibrant School community.
To excel in this role you will have proven experience of working within the charity sector, perhaps in a CEO role, working as a NED, or some other strategic leadership or governance role.
You will contribute to the work of the Board in ensuring high standards of achievement for all children and young people in the School by ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction, holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, the performance management of staff, and overseeing the financial performance of the School and making sure its money is well spent.

This role is one of two Trustee positions on the Board providing oversight of the Trust’s finances and financial management. In addition to the general duties of trustees (more information here), the role involves:

· Monitoring the financial standing of the charity.

· Ensuring that the charity’s finances are managed responsibly.

· Overseeing the reporting of the financial health of the charity to the Board of Trustees and of the charity’s financial risk-management process.

· Providing general support and oversight for the effective running of the Trust as a member of the Board of Trustees.

The role may also include chair responsibility for the Trust’s Finance Committee (not essential).

Specific Finance Responsibilities – in conjunction with the Chair of the Finance Committee

Scrutiny of papers produced by the Head of Finance & Operations (HoFO) and the wider Senior Management Team in the following areas:

Budgeting and strategic financial planning

• Ensure that strategic plans are financially appraised and that implementation plans are aligned with budgets.
• Provide constructive challenge to the annual and longer-term budget and forecasting processes.
• Ensure transparency and accountability in resource allocation.

Management Reporting

• Ensure that a high standard of management accounting is maintained.
• Liaise with the Chair of the Finance Committee to guide the HoFO in the preparation and production of high quality management accounts to the Board.

Statutory Financial Reporting

• Ensure the finalisation of statutory financial accounts by the HoFO in line with charity regulations and statements of recommended practice and the completion of the external audit process. Assist fellow trustees to formally approve the Trustees’ Annual Report and Annual Accounts

Reserves Policy

• Review the reserves policy.

Keep the Board informed regularly of the free reserves position and advise on strategies for coping with changing circumstances.

Governance and Financial Control

• Ensure that proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are controlled, invested and economically spent in line with governance, legal and regulatory requirements.
• Attend quarterly Finance Committee meetings and support the Chair of the Finance Committee in reporting financial matters to the Board of trustees.

Cooking Up is a small dynamic charity teaching people living in hardship to cook affordable, nutritious meals to take home to their families.

Our data to date shows that Cooking Up is having a positive impact on the lives of the clients we support who face challenging circumstances such as food poverty, disabilities. poor mental health and social isolation. After completing a 5-week course with us, clients report feeling more confident about cooking a meal from scratch and understand better how to eat healthily and shop on a budget. Our classes are fun and sociable and clients are supported on a 1:1 basis by our wonderful and growing team of local volunteers.

We are seeking a Finance Trustee to join our Board. The role involves all aspects of the charity's finances, including banking, preparing budgets, invoicing and payments, preparing annual accounts and reporting to the board. 

Cooking Up’s Board of Trustees shares ultimate responsibility for governing the charity and directing how it is managed and run. As a member of the Board of Trustees, you will help set the strategic aims, objectives and direction of the charity, ensure that the charity complies with charity law requirements and ensure the charity’s resources are responsibly managed.

In addition to fulfilling the duties of a Trustee, the Finance Trustee maintains an overview of Cooking Up’s financial affairs. The Finance Trustee ensures that effective and appropriate financial measures, controls and procedures are put in place and reports to the Board at regular intervals about the financial health of the organisation.

Specific Responsibilities of the Finance Trustee

● Taking a lead in all aspects of the financial management of Cooking Up and providing financial advice as appropriate to the Board of Trustees on the financial implications of Cooking Up’s strategies and plans.

● Overseeing the presentation of budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees

● Ensuring that proper accounting records are kept, and that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place

● Ensuring that robust and comprehensive financial policies are in place and being implemented, and supporting the development of policies covering financial reserves, and cost management

● Monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity

● Overseeing financial controls and adherence to systems, regularly liaising with the Board

● Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan, including overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process

● Lead on the appointment of and liaison with external auditors

● Ensuring that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by the Charity Commission

● Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities

About Care for Veterans

Care for Veterans (CfV) was established in 1919 as the Queen Alexandra Hospital Home to care for soldiers returning from World War I with life-changing disabilities. For over 100 years, it has provided long term nursing, rehabilitation, respite and end of life care to Veterans and their families.  The 62-bed home has been at Gifford House in Worthing since 1933.

CfV are seeking a Trustee with a finance and/or accountancy background, preferably with an ACCA/ICAEW qualification (or equivalent).  The successful candidate will join and in time, chair the Finance Committee.

What will you be doing?

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Contributing at four board meetings, a strategy offsite and four Finance sub-committee meetings a year. These are usually held during business hours in Worthing.
• Develop a good understanding of CfV’s operations and the environment in which it operates;
• Monitor the performance of CfV in a constructive and inquisitive way;
• Making their time, skills, and experience available to CfV and its executive (in and outside of regular board meetings) and supporting key fundraising events;
• Average time commitment is 12-15 days per year

What are we looking for?

• You will have a background and/or qualification in finance or accountancy (ACCA/ICAEW or equivalent preferred). You will have strong commitment to the improving the lives of veterans and the work of CfV.
• Previous trustee experience is not necessary as new trustees will be given support and training.

Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that Upbeat Communities achieves its core purpose. Duties

Any individual acting as a trustee for Upbeat Communities would be required to
carry out the following:

• Promote the vision, mission and values of the charity

Overall responsibility:

• Leading on the financial affairs of the Foodbank; ensuring that they are conducted within the required legal, accounting and good practice conventions;

The Walk21 Foundation is a UK charity that works internationally. Our vision is a world where everyone can walk in a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment.

We are seeking a UK-based trustee to join the board and act as honorary treasurer. This is a voluntary position to work alongside a friendly and passionate group of international trustees to provide governance and strategic direction for the charity.

The board meets 3 or 4 times a year online, with some additional work conducted via email – so you can be based anywhere in the UK. The role requires 5-7 hours of your time per quarter.

Carers' Hub is an independent local charity based in Brixton. Our mission is to improve carers’ lives in Lambeth through quality services and community engagement. We achieve this through four core workstreams: raising awareness of carers, influencing local policy through community engagement activities, improving carer wellbeing and connecting carers to each other and to support and training opportunities through our services.

Caring for a loved one, family member, friend or neighbour, can have a significant impact on all aspects of a carer's own life. Our dedicated and passionate team work with carers to help overcome challenges around managing at home, finances, caring with confidence, education and employment, physical health and emotional wellbeing.

We would now like to add to our  Board and would like to hear from you if you are keen to offer your time and expertise to support us. We are particularly keen to hear from you if you have skills in the following areas:

Our board of trustees work together to lead Pause, and have the ultimate responsibility for our success. They meet on a regular basis to discuss Pause’s progress, problems and the future. They listen to, support and challenge the Chief Executive and leadership team, to make sure they stay on track and meet all their legal obligations. They also work with the Pause Advisory Group, which is made up of women who have completed the Pause Programme, to ensure that women are consulted on and involved in crucial decision-making.

Pause currently has eight trustees who all have different skills, experience and expertise. What brings them together, is their passion for improving the lives of women who’ve had children removed from their care.
