Job description

Apollo Music Projects is looking for a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees.

This is a wonderful opportunity to join the board of a dynamic and successful organisation.

Apollo Music Projects is a music education charity that transforms the lives of disadvantaged children in deprived areas through the magic of live classical music. We offer children an experience that enhances and enriches their education, giving them access to something they would not experience otherwise. Since 2004, over 20,000 children from primary and special schools in deprived parts of London have benefited from our programmes.

The role requires an understanding of charitable financial practice and accounting and of financial management at an organisational level. Knowledge of charity accounting and/or experience working for an Arts organisation are desirable.

The Treasurer will:

  • Ensure that the annual financial statements are complete and accurate, reflecting a true and fair picture of the charity’s position in line with regulation and legislation.
  • Guide and advise the Board of Trustees in the approval and review of budgets, accounts, and financial statements, as well as on the financial implications of the strategic and operational plans of the charity.
  • Oversee and present the results of budgets, management accounts and the annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees.
  • Lead in the board’s duty to ensure that proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are properly controlled, invested and economically spent, in line with good governance, legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Confirm that the charity’s financial resources meet present and future needs.
  • Support the Finance Officer, who is responsible for the day-to-day financial activity, ensuring that sound accounting procedures and financial controls are in place.
  • Ensure independent examination of the accounts is properly carried out and that accepted recommendations of the independent examiner are implemented.
  • Present the accounts at the annual general meeting and facilitate discussion of important issues.
  • Work with and support the CEO who is delegated by the trustees to run the charity.
  • Ensure that all funds are spent furthering the objects of the charity.
  • As a board member be responsible for the good governance of the charity.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A clear commitment to the values and objectives of Apollo Music Projects.
  • Financial or accounting expertise, and knowledge or experience of the role.
  • The ability to work effectively as a member of a team whilst contributing an independent perspective.
  • An understanding of the values of accountability, openness and honesty.
  • The ability to think strategically and challenge constructively.
  • Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship as well of the respective roles of the Chair, Trustees and Executive Management. In particular, an understanding that the Board leads on governance while the CEO leads on operations with the support of the Board.

The Treasurer will also be a full Trustee of the Board and general responsibilities will include:

  • Providing guidance and oversight to ensure that Apollo Music Projects develops the structure and financial sustainability to deliver on its objectives.
  • Participating in approving strategy and evaluating performance.
  • Acting as ambassador for Apollo Music Projects.
  • Ensuring that Apollo Music Projects complies with charity law.

General responsibilities will include:

  • Providing guidance and oversight to ensure that Apollo Music Projects develops the structure and financial sustainability to deliver on its objectives.
  • Participating in approving strategy and evaluating performance.
  • Helping to ensure that we can bring more music to more children each year, and to broaden the reach of the organisation by growing organically.
  • Supporting the CEO in successfully managing the organisation.

The Treasurer will have a vital role to play as the organisation develops over the next few years. In order to meet our goals of bringing music to more children each year we need to ensure that the financial affairs of the organisation are well managed and that we can plan ahead with confidence. A good Treasurer and Finance Officer partnership is key, and you can bring added value to the organisation, helping us to navigate the current challenging times, while planning for a successful future.

This is a chance for you to help Apollo Music Projects make a real difference to children in primary and special schools in deprived areas.

The Treasurer will be expected to attend four Trustee meetings each year, held in London, and to attend occasional events, workshops and concerts.

Candidates will be interviewed by a small panel, with the possibility of several short interviews online and in person.

Apollo Music Projects is keen to ensure that the Board is representative of the community we serve and particularly welcomes applications from candidates of diverse backgrounds.

The role will remain open until we have found the right candidate.
