About Being a Trustee
CHIPS (Christian International Peace Service) trustees play a crucial role in advancing peace in communities worldwide. Working collaboratively as part of the Board, they provide strategic oversight to the organisation, helping to strengthen its impact and sustainability by bringing their unique expertise and skills to the team. We're particularly looking for a trustee with a strong background in finance, accounting or bookkeeping in order to help support our Director and Board in there oversight of financial matters.
We hope that the experience of being a trustee for CHIPS will be rewarding. As well as making a difference to the communities that we support, we hope you will gain satisfaction from generously giving of your time. We want to have a Board of Trustees who are diverse in their experience and knowledge so that impact can be sustained. Whilst specific roles may vary, the overall duties are:
- Ensuring that CHIPS pursues its stated objects (purposes), as defined in its constitution, by developing and agreeing a long-term strategy in coordination with CHIPS staff and project teams
- Ensuring that CHIPS complies with its constitution, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
- Ensuring that CHIPS applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its charitable objects for the benefit of the public
- Ensuring that CHIPS defines its goals and evaluates performance against agreed targets
- Safeguarding the good name and values of CHIPS
- Ensuring the effective and efficient governance of CHIPS, including having appropriate policies and procedures in place
- Ensuring the financial stability of CHIPS
- Protecting and managing the property of the charity and ensuring the proper investment of the charity’s funds
- Following proper and formal arrangements for the appointment, supervision, support, appraisal and remuneration of the senior leadership of CHIPS
- Communicating on behalf of the organisation, if necessary
- Facilitating any feedback or complaints so that any issues are addressed swiftly
In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.
Finance Trustee specific role
- Reviewing quarterly management accounts and highlighting any variances or financial risks to the board.
- Supporting the annual budgeting process by advising on assumptions, cost control, and sustainability.
- Overseeing the preparation of annual accounts with CHIPS staff and working with the auditor or independent examiner as needed.
- Helping develop and monitor financial policies such as reserves, investments, and internal controls.
- Providing strategic financial insight to guide decision-making on fundraising, staffing, or new initiatives.

Who we are
Arts for Dementia uses the power of the arts to inspire people living with dementia to get creative, connect, learn new skills and most importantly, have fun.Our free workshops aim to challenge and boost confidence and wellbeing through a variety of art forms from visual arts to drama, sculpture, dance and more.
For people living with dementia and those who support them day to day, these are opportunities to make friends in a safe and friendly setting, to be part of the local community, to stay active and to enjoy the fulfilment that comes from creative activities. Our current priority locations are the London boroughs of Southwark and Camden.Our in-person workshops are all in London, while online activities are open to people across the UK.
Our regular one-day training courses provide creative facilitators across the UK with the knowledge and skills they need to support dementia-friendly activities.
The role of a trustee
Our team of trustees plays a key role in setting the strategy – the overall direction – of the charity. There are four formal board meetings each year where, together with the Chief Executive, our trustees oversee the delivery of the strategy and financial management, consider operational plans and explore what support they can provide to enable the staff team in their work.
Often this support is connected to a trustee’s expertise in a particular field, for example marketing, fundraising, I.T. or legal, or the networks they have access to such as local community groups, potential donors or arts organisations.
Specific areas of activity such as finance and fundraising are also supported by small sub-committees that bring appropriate staff and trustees together so that work can be progressed between the quarterly meetings. These are arranged at times to suit those involved.
Currently quarterly meetings of all Trustees are held in person and online alternately. Online meetings are early evening, and in-person meetings are in central London during the day. They each last for two hours. If it helps new trustees to be fully involved, we are happy to explore different timings for future meetings.
What difference could you make?

You can make a real difference to those and others affected by bringing your additional experience into the charity. This might be from involvement in your community or your understanding of dementia within a minoritized ethnic group. It might be from your work, leisure activities or your profession.
The important thing is that your experience should broaden our knowledge, help us reach a wide range of people and ensure our charity is far-sighted and well run.

We know that dementia and its effects have no barriers, so our approach to recruiting new trustees aims to have no barriers and to be supportive and open to ideas. 1 year, 21 hours per week traineeship - Voluntary
Are you looking to pursue a career in UK wildlife conservation?
This role is intended to provide experience and skills necessary to pursue a career in UK wildlife conservation and habitat management. To date all former Evidence trainees have gained paid jobs in the sector following the end of the traineeship.
Ecological Evidence Trainees are be based in our Evidence and Connected Landscapes Team. There is a maximum of Evidence 2 trainees at any one time.
As the Nature sector moves to an evidence-based approach it is the Evidence team that collect, analyse and report on the wildlife, environmental and ecological data used for GWT and some local government decision making. Data is collected and analysed by a friendly team of staff, trainees and Citizen Science volunteers.
This is 12-month voluntary traineeship with 21 hours per week schedule with some flexibility.
Although based in Gloucester, this role involves travelling to nature reserves across Gloucestershire, so independent transport is essential March – October.
It is the nature of the work that there may be the occasional option to attend evening and weekend events. However, this is not a requirement of the role. You are not obligated to work beyond your standard hours. However, should you wish to participate in evening or weekend events, you are welcome to do so.
Our head office facilities are at Robinswood Hill Country Park in Gloucester. Trainees survey nature reserves across Gloucestershire during spring and summer.
It is the nature of the work of Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust that tasks and responsibilities are, in many circumstances unpredictable and varied.

The Bromley Experts by Experience Treasurer will help the board of trustees carry out their financial responsibilities, working closely with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chair of Trustees and staff team in establishing strong foundations for this Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisation with a view to a financially sustainable future. You will also be supporting us in developing our future approach to financial management, making the most of financial modelling, and supporting clear reporting to funders, partners and stakeholders.
The Treasurer will play a vital role, working with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chair of Trustees and staff team to help the organisation ensure sound financial records, develop income streams, and build impact reports. As part of a new, expanded board of trustees at Bromley Experts by Experience, you will provide effective financial oversight, supporting the CEO and senior staff members in developing our vision and strategy to ensure a financially sustainable future.
IMPORTANT: As a Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisation, our governing articles require that our staff, trustees and volunteers bring with them lived experience of disability (self-identified or otherwise). See how we define this below.
Responsibilities of the Treasurer:
- Present financial reports to the board in a format that helps fellow trustees understand X by X Bromley’s financial position.
- Advise the board on how to carry out its financial responsibilities.
- Work with professional advisors and staff, as needed to oversee the preparation and scrutiny of annual accounts.
- Ensure X by X Bromley activities benefit its members and beneficiaries.
- Ensure the board fulfils their duties and responsibilities for effective charity governance in line with Bromley Experts by Experience’s policies and the requirements of the Charity Commission for England and Wales.
- Support and advocate for X by X Bromley’s mission, vision and values.
What we ask of you:
- The Treasurer should expect to serve for a minimum of 12 months.
- The Treasurer is required to attend scheduled meetings with some ad hoc meetings where necessary.
- It is anticipated that the time commitment will be an approximate average of 2.5 hours per week. This will mainly comprise of:
- Board meeting attendance (plus preparation thereof) every 8 weeks,
- AGM attendance (plus preparation of papers and accounts),
- Supporting our annual Disability Pride event.
- Regular scheduled meetings with senior staff.
- As we are a very small charity, there could be occasions when extra time will be required (e.g. during the planning of new projects or dealing with any particular difficulties that arise), or where additional support would be appreciated (e.g. attending events, meeting members at project days).
Key Skills and Qualities:
- Lived Experience of disability (can be self-identified)
- A belief that Disabled People can and should be actively welcomed and included in our communities. An understanding that it is barriers in society that make that harder. This is called the Social Model of Disability.
- A qualified accountant with not-for-profit awareness and knowledge. An understanding of very small charities and/or DDPOs would be advantageous.
- Competent IT skills, including working knowledge of QuickBooks and Excel.
- Ability to communicate and explain financial information accessibly.
- Strong analytical and evaluation skills, demonstrating professional and independent judgement.
- A genuine interest in local communities and people.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, communicating in a way that is accessible to you.
- Understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship, the Treasurer role, and the financial aspects of running a charity.
- An effective team worker, contributing an independent perspective.

The Youth Board consists of 15 motivated young people (aged 16-25) who are passionate about London’s wildlife and ensuring young people’s voices are heard. South Liverpool Domestic Abuse Services (SLDAS) are seeking a new Treasurer to join our Board to oversee the charity’s financial governance, compliance and planning. As a small independent charity founded in 1998, SLDAS offer free and accessible support to women who experience domestic abuse in South and South-Central Liverpool. Domestic abuse has a devastating impact upon individuals, families and communities. Year on year, recorded incidents of domestic abuse have increased in Merseyside, and rose sharply during the pandemic. Women are falling through the net and we want to do more to help them.
We employ a team of nine full and part time staff who support the running of the service, including a director who joined us in April 2023, responsible for managing and developing the staff and service, and developing the strategic direction of the charity alongside the Trustees.
SLDAS is mainly funded by a number of local authority and other national grant providers with an interest in domestic abuse. Whilst this is a competitive and challenging time for all charities, we have made some steps towards sourcing new multi-year funding to expand our services, making this an exciting time to join us on the board of Trustees.
Please note that this opportunity is open to women only, and is exempt under the Equality Act 2010, Schedule 9, Part 1.
Becoming a Trustee with SLDAS offers a chance to make a real difference to the lives of women at risk of domestic abuse, but it will also offer you opportunities to meet new people, take on new challenges and volunteer in an interesting and strategic role.
To join the board of Trustees as Treasurer, we are particularly interested in receiving applications from women with strong skills and professional experience in the following areas:
• Previous Trusteeship role(s);
• Knowledge of charity accounting guidelines;
• Budgeting and forecasting;
• Management reporting, and the ability to explain financial concepts to non-finance trustees and staff;
• Accountancy qualification preferred, or demonstrable experience in a financial accounting role;
• Financial controls and risk management;
Successful candidate(s) will demonstrate:
• A commitment to support women in South Liverpool to live their lives free from violence, abuse and fear;
• A willingness and ability to devote the necessary time and effort to the role;
• A commitment to take the lead in financial governance, promoting the safeguarding of the financial viability of the Charity;
• An enquiring approach, not afraid to ask questions or challenge;
• An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship;
• Clear communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as a member of a board.
The Treasurer will also be expected to attend and chair the Finance Planning and Fundraising sub committee. Some mentoring hours with the Director and the Finance worker may also be expected.
SLDAS recognise that the role of a Trustee is a responsible position and that you may require training and support to conduct your role to the best of your ability. We therefore offer Trustees an induction, ongoing training and opportunities for mentoring from other Trustees.
The time commitment for Trustees is around 4-6 hours a month. Board meetings are monthly, usually in the evenings. Most of the meetings are virtual via zoom meeting, although we do try and meet in person on occasion, either at the office or in the South Liverpool area. Trustee positions are unremunerated, but reasonable travel, subsistence and childcare expenses will be reimbursed.

What we ask of you:
- Trustee Board Members should expect to serve for a minimum of 12 months.
- Trustee Board Members are required to attend scheduled meetings with some ad hoc meetings where necessary.
- It is anticipated that the time commitment will be an approximate average 1.5 hours per week. This will mainly comprise of:
- Board meeting attendance (plus preparation and minutes) every 8 weeks.
- AGM attendance (plus preparation and minutes)
- Supporting our annual Disability Pride event.
- Occasional scheduled meetings with senior staff and/or Chair.
- As we are a very small charity, there could be occasions when extra time will be required (e.g. during the planning of new projects or dealing with any particular difficulties that arise), or where additional support would be appreciated (e.g. attending events, meeting members at project days)
