Are you an experienced community organiser looking to make a real difference in an urban community? Do you have experience of working with minoritised and marginalised communities? Are you a people-person with the skills and tenacity to help local people start exciting new initiatives?

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team at Big Local Works (BLW) as our Community Organiser. Based on a historic Market Square recently refurbished with £2m from the GLA, we want to develop a more people-powered regeneration to sit alongside the massive property development happening all around us.

As well as driving economic improvements, we want to help create a more tolerant, cohesive, and vibrant local community where everybody is welcome. Part of that is to help local people create more community events, activities, and enterprises that give people the chance to collaborate together and build a lively community where people work and play together.

We need someone with the imagination, creativity and skill to support communities and individuals to have a say in how their community develops, but also take an active part in shaping the area. We have already helped many local people set up their own initiatives, building their confidence and helping them find resources – including the Bermondsey Literature festival, Latin markets, and a range of dance, ecology and arts projects.  This role could help shape the future of South Bermondsey and help us make a great place even better – with a more inclusive economy and community for all.

Key to this is better involvement and increasing the visibility of people from a wider range of backgrounds, in a highly divided area. You’ll play a key role in fostering a welcoming community by helping navigate occasional conflicts, with support from your manager, and approaching challenging interactions with empathy and professionalism.

General Information

Big Local Works (BLW) is a community-focused economic and social inclusion charity based in Bermondsey, South East London. We want to help create a thriving, inclusive local economy and a community in which everyone can participate.

We deliver our support in the community through three main services:

• Expert welfare and benefits advice and advocacy for local people experiencing poverty and hardship
• Employability Skills training and coaching to help people access ways of increasing their earned income
• Start-up and enterprise support for clients who wish to start trading on the local ‘Blue Market’ People Powered Regeneration
• Wider community building designed to create a more tolerant, diverse, and lively local community where everybody is welcome

We have a strategic vision to create a ‘people-powered regeneration’ in an area already undergoing massive redevelopment. In July 2019, a community campaign was successful in securing £2m funding from the GLA for the ‘Made in Bermondsey’ regeneration project centred on making key improvements to the local marketplace,

the Blue Market in South Bermondsey. Final works were completed in July 2022 and the market now has a first-class infrastructure for traders, local residents and visitors to use and enjoy the Blue Market Place. The market also showcases a vision of a better future for the local area: a more prosperous, resilient and connected local community where people come together to trade, socialise, and celebrate across the diverse boundaries.

South Bermondsey has a problematic history with racism and other forms of intolerance, and while migrant (recent and longer-term) communities have begun to settle in Bermondsey after many years of exclusion, there remains a sense that they are not full members of our community. Through our work we seek to empower local people, encourage enterprise and community activity, which is intended both to support the economic regeneration of the area and to empower and increase the confidence of local diverse communities.

Most recently, we have been successful in securing £200,000 from the Esmee Fairbairn Charity for strategy and community engagement support in the local area.

Our key goals are

• Local people have more say over the changes in their local community.
• This means that local people are actively involved in the development of place-based community assets,activities and projects.
• Local people will have more influence on local development and regeneration.
• A more diverse range of local people work together to improve their community, which means community members from a wider range of backgrounds become active citizens.
• There are better relationships and increased collaboration between local stakeholders.
• People feel proud of their local area, and hopeful for the future.
• Stories and messages about the area are more inclusive and welcoming of diverse perspectives and communities.
• People are better informed about the opportunities and assets in their local community.

Community Organiser – Enterprise and Engagement

Over the past 2 years, we’ve undertaken in-depth research and community mapping to understand our area’s needs, assets and lived experiences.

This role has three key responsibilities:

• Outreach and engagement with diverse local communities to help them build a stronger, more representative voice.
• Supporting the development of new initiatives by local people to stimulate a sense of community.
• Ensuring that a wider range of local people are involved and included in community activity, and their voices heard – especially those from marginalized communities

Key Tasks include

• Provide practical support and encouragement to the development of new initiatives in the local area.
• Broker collaborations and relationships between local groups, helping them develop relationships and networks.
• Identify and develop active citizens, and support them to develop and deliver their own individual and shared community Initiatives – from microbusinesses on the market, to dance and knitting clubs or arts groups
• Facilitate groups and provide ‘servant leadership’ for community groups where appropriate, managing conflict effectively
• Develop effective and positive relationships with local stakeholders from many different backgrounds, communicating assertively and with diplomacy and tact.
• Organise Events: Plan and host public and private events, both online and in person, to strengthen community ties and increase visibility.
• Work closely with the Business Improvement District, local charities and businesses and key strategic partners to help us achieve the overall aims of the People-Powered Regeneration
• Build and maintain a network of contacts among our priority groups and communicate efficiently with them
• Lead on day-to-day local communications and marketing, supporting the development of newsletters and online content, with appropriate support and resource
• Contribute to research and evaluation across activities to ensure our work has the best possible impact.
• Help represent the work to existing and potential supporters, and the local community, to secure buy-in and support for the programme

Person Specification: Key Skills that would help you in this role:

Skills, knowledge and experience

• Experience of developing relationships with a range of different and diverse community groups especially focusing on historically marginalised groups, especially BAME and recent migrant communities, as well as communities of faith, LGBTQ+ people, and others.
• A strong understanding of, and commitment to, the principles and practices of ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion and how these relate to community organising.
• Demonstrable experience of maintaining strong working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently and proactively, with effective time management and prioritisation skills, to be able to multitask.
• Ability to communicate confidently, professionally, and approachably.
• Experience of managing conflict and challenging behaviour, with appropriate management support
• A high level of written and oral communication skills
• Experience of managing a small budget.
• Professional IT skills including confidence using Microsoft Office and Google Drive, and use of social media. Training can be given.

Personal qualities

• A people-person who actively enjoys getting out and meeting people and forming connections with others
• Somebody with enthusiasm and passion, but also an ability to focus on getting things done

• We would particularly welcome those with experience of supporting microenterprise, as well as purely recreational social/ community-focused activity.

Working pattern

While there is scope for working from home on some tasks, you will need to be present in our centre, on the market, and out and about in the community for a good proportion of your time.

There will be a need to work flexibly, including some evenings and some weekends, for which time off in lieu will be given.

Action for Refugees in Lewisham (AFRIL) is recruiting for a new Casework Manager to lead our growing and dynamic Casework and Advocacy Service.You will be joining an impactful local organisation at a crucial time in our development. We are looking for a hard working and dynamic leader who can balance the operational demands of casework and managing frontline services, with excellent HR skills and a keen interest in policy and developing partnerships. This is an exciting and integral role within a supportive and dynamic team at AFRIL. The role is available due to the advancement of the previous post-holder to a more senior post.

AFRIL’s Casework and Advocacy Service is a busy, professional team of 4 caseworkers (3 FTE) , a Community Activities Coordinator, and a number of volunteers. The team has grown significantly in the last 3 years, in response to the needs of our community and due to recognition of AFRIL’s high quality and relevant casework provision. The Casework and Advocacy Service provides AQS accredited complex casework and advice in the areas of Asylum Support, Housing, Benefits and Community Care. The service works to fill the gap, focusing on supporting those with complex vulnerabilities requiring wrap around support. AFRIL takes its services to where clients are; holding regular casework drop-in’s at asylum support hotels, community centres and at Lewisham Foodbank. AFRIL is also recently accredited by the Immigration Advice Authority to provide advice at Level 1, in both Immigration and Asylum and is currently in the process of becoming accredited at Level 2.

AFRIL’s Casework and Advocacy service uses casework trends and data to work with community members in order to engage in policy and systemic change. Utilising casework and community co-production, the service has created sector wide resources on asylum support, engaged in strategic litigation and successfully influenced local, pan-London and national policy outcomes. This is a growing area of work for the service and the successful Casework Manager will be required to balance high quality casework outputs and management of a team, while working closely with the Executive Director on emerging policy and advocacy work.

Action for Refugees in Lewisham (AFRIL) is a registered charity that supports asylum seekers, refugees, and vulnerable migrants in South East London. We support people to lift themselves out of poverty, assert their rights and rebuild their lives in the heart of our community. We  provide both crisis support to meet immediate need, and longer-term, flexible programmes to  tackle the underlying problems that lead people to be in crisis, supporting people to integrate and thrive. • Casework and Advocacy Service: providing AQS accredited advice, casework and legal interventions in asylum support, community care, housing, welfare benefits and related matters. Pre-Action Protocol letters to challenge unlawful public law decisions and IAA Level 1 Immigration Advice.

• Destitution Support - a fortnightly Food Bank in partnership with St Peter’s Church providing food, food vouchers, toiletries, and other essentials, alongside a warm hub with free cafe, information and support. Small grants for essential items and cash payments for food in emergencies. Securing and distributing gifts in kind, e.g. winter coats, laptops and data. 

• Allotment of Refuge - a welcoming community of food growers that supports improved health, wellbeing and integration of members, whilst protecting the local environment. 

• Immigration Project in partnership with Southwark Law Centre, providing free legal advice and representation to support people to regularise their immigration status. 

We use our frontline experience, together with our clients, to engage in policy and influencing work to improve the services and policies that impact our clients group. 

We're looking for a very capable Finance Manager to join us. This is a varied and rewarding finance role at the heart of a small, friendly and ambitious charity working to improve the lives of people with eczema. Please see the recruitment pack for more information, including full job description.

To be successful, you'lll need to be proactive and enjoy working in a small team. The role involves a high degree of delegated responsibility and autonomy, and you're expected to manage your workload effectively within your functional remit.

The post-holder is responsible for managing the day-to-day running of the Society’s finance and CRM operations, including the National Eczema Society membership scheme. This is a full-time sole-charge role, managing the processing side of charity’s finance function, including managing purchase and sales ledgers, preparing payment runs, managing supplier reconciliations and month-end tasks.

You would join our small team based at the charity’s offices near London Bridge. There is flexibility for some home-based working and you are expected to work in the office at least two days a week to facilitate effective team-working. National Eczema Society offers help for staff studying for accounting exams.

As a small and agile charity, we punch above our weight and have big ambitions. The Role

You will manage the day-to-day operation of the shop in the absence of the Shop Manager, including managing a team of volunteers, ensuring accurate accounting and handling of assets, delivering high standards of customer service, and adhering to all charity policies and procedures. Specifically, you will:

· Play an active part in running our shop in Hornbeam, supporting the Shop Manager in implementing processes and ways of working.

· Provide cover for days off, holidays and sickness as required, with possible occasional travel to other shops to provide support if needed by the charity.

· Support the Shop Manager to maximise the income and profit of the shop through active stock management, replenishment, and rotation.

· Manage a team of well-trained volunteers in the absence of the Shop Manager and take every effort to create a positive retail environment.

· Support the Shop Manager to ensure accurate accounting and handling of assets (items donated and money received).

· Support the Shop Manager to ensure accurate record keeping of items donated and the amount paid for each item for Gift Aid tax reclaim purposes.

· Create a welcoming professional atmosphere and deliver high standards of customer service for all customers and supporters.

About You

To be considered for this role, you will need:

· To ideally be educated to GCSE level or equivalent but not essential.  

· Experience of managing people/volunteers including recruitment and development.

· To be highly organised with good time management skills.

· To be able to prioritise workload and meet deadlines.

· To have good planning, guiding and motivation skills to successfully achieve targeted income is desirable.

About the role

As Senior Finance & Operations Manager at Future Frontiers, your role is to oversee the finance and operations functions for an ambitious social mobility charity with an income of circa £1.4m and a team of 20 people committed to achieving lasting impact for young people.

You will oversee day-to-day financial operations, manage a small team, and deliver accurate, timely reporting that supports strategic decision-making across the organisation. You will work closely with the CEO and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to ensure robust financial planning, compliance, and risk management. Your work will support and enable Future Frontiers’ mission and help us maximise our impact.

Your responsibilities

The focus of this role is on financial management and reporting for the organisation, as well as overseeing operations such as HR processes and IT. Core responsibilities include:

Financial Management and Reporting

• Run the monthly finance cycle to strict deadlines, ensuring accurate and complete data to support decision-making.
• Deliver concise monthly management accounts and variance analysis vs budget in a timely manner with insightful commentary to inform the CEO, SLT and Trustees.
• Oversee receipts and payments, reconciliations, and month-end procedures to ensure data accuracy and robust financial oversight.
• Lead on statutory accounts preparation and external audit to ensure full compliance and smooth audit outcomes.
• Continuously improve financial policies and processes to embed best practice and compliance with relevant legislation and Charity SORP.

Financial Planning

• Prepare annual budget documents, working closely with budget holders and supporting with forecasting and revisions to ensure realistic, well-informed financial plans that align with organisational strategy.
• Produce consolidated accounts, forecasts, and cashflows with commentary to support Trustees’ and SLT’s decision-making.
• Partner with SLT to provide financial analysis that drives operational efficiency and supports income generation and strategic projects.
• Support the SLT to develop multi-year income and expenditure forecasts to aid long-term funding and resource planning.
• Ensure the finance system structure, workflows and reporting remain fit for purpose and effectively support operations.

Operations and Compliance

• Manage relationships with key suppliers and outsourced providers, including landlords, payroll, pensions and insurers to ensure service quality and value for money.
• Oversee the recruitment and on-boarding of new staff, supporting the Finance & Operations Officer to coordinate the process, and supporting recruiting managers as needed.
• Ensure the maintenance of templates and processes to enable line managers to deliver the staff journey including inductions, staff surveys, annual reviews, and exits.
• Oversee the efficient usage of our database, systems and key platforms (including Salesforce, Xero, website), ensuring that the team is well resourced and has sufficient training to perform their roles.
• Oversee the management of IT hardware, software and systems, helping to keep Future Frontiers’ information secure and up to date, and acting as key liaison with third parties.

We are recruiting for Service Manager who is passionate about supporting survivors who are impacted by domestic abuse and other gender-based crimes.  This is a multifaceted, fast paced, and exciting role where you will join our team in Hounslow & Hillingdon to lead on the delivery and development of high-quality refuge services for survivors of domestic abuse and other gender-based crimes. Our service provision in Hounslow & Hillingdon includes number of refuges supporting survivors and their children.

The post holder will provide line management and support to the accommodation based services staff. This will include providing supervision on complex and high-risk cases, overseeing operational emergencies, and ensuring high standards of casework. You will also ensure that all service users in refuges always receive a high-quality support service in line with Refuge’s policies and procedures.

The Service Manager will lead on the delivery of the multiagency aspect of work, working jointly with the Refuge teams and wider stakeholders to deliver best services to the survivors.

Candidates must have proven experience of providing direct emotional and practical support to vulnerable people, managing, and motivating staff, managing casework as well as working within multiagency setting.  In addition, you must have an excellent knowledge of domestic abuse and other gender-based violence and its impact on survivors.  

You will have knowledge of relevant Criminal and Civil law legislation, as well as Housing and Health and Safety legislation.   

As member of the management team, you will be required to participate in an out-of-hours on call management service.

The service manager will be responsible for ensuring that contractual and other funding requirements are met fully, this includes ensuring that the services operate within the allocated budget and that Refuge’s high-quality standards are maintained. The role may involve visiting potential sites and contributing to the establishment of new services in conjunction with the development team.

The Role

The Trust continues to evolve to meet the increasing challenges of protecting and enhancing rivers and waterbodies in the catchment.

We are seeking a Finance and Governance Manager to join our Senior Leadership Team and lead the Trust’s finance, governance, and back-office functions. This is a pivotal role focused on ensuring financial integrity, regulatory compliance, and effective charity governance. While not involved in field-based project delivery, the Finance Manager plays a strategic role in supporting the organisation’s mission by enabling robust financial planning, reporting, and operational support. You will work closely with the Chief Executive Officer, Board of Trustees, and project teams to ensure the Trust remains financially resilient and well-governed.

As the Finance and Governance Manager, you should possess expertise in financial control and reporting, allowing you to effectively handle delegated responsibilities. Your numerical skills and critical thinking abilities will enable you to proactively address challenges and streamline processes.

The post holder will be home based with travel throughout the Mersey catchment. The applicant will need to live within or close to the Mersey catchment to facilitate regular travel to meetings. Remote working from other parts of the country cannot be considered for this role due to the need for regular face-to-face interactions.

• A financial control and reporting background, qualification or qualified by experience. 
• Experience of organisational governance, ideally with knowledge of UK General Accounting Practice and Charities regulations.
• Experience of financial and management reporting within a small to medium-sized organisation.
• Experience of liaising with accountants to prepare annual accounts and reports required by the Charity Commission.
