We are seeking a dedicated Volunteer Finance Specialist to help us set up our core financial processes and ensure we're ready for growth. Who We're Looking For

We need a meticulous, organised, and pragmatic individual with solid financial experience. You'll likely possess:

• Financial Management Expertise: Proven experience in bookkeeping, accounting, financial administration, or setting up financial systems, ideally within the charity or non-profit sector.

• Systems Setup Experience: Familiarity with accounting software (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks) and setting up financial processes (e.g., expense management, payment processing, budget tracking).

• Compliance Knowledge: Understanding of basic financial regulations for charities in the UK, including Gift Aid (though specific expertise isn't required for setup, awareness is a plus).

• Attention to Detail: Meticulous in ensuring accuracy and compliance in all financial records.

Your Role as Finance Volunteer

In this critical set-up phase, you will be instrumental in:

• Setting Up Accounting Systems: Advising on and potentially configuring appropriate accounting software to manage income and expenditure.

• Developing Financial Processes: Helping to design and document procedures for donations, expenses, payments, and financial reporting.

• Budgeting Support: Assisting in the creation of initial operational budgets and financial forecasts.

• Bank Account Setup: Providing guidance and support related to setting up the charity's bank accounts.

• Compliance Foundations: Advising on initial steps for financial compliance and record-keeping required by the Charity Commission and HMRC.

Volunteers help to keep our UK charity shops running like clockwork and are an essential part of everything that we do. Our charity shops raise vital funds that support the wide range of services Age UK delivers, so if you have some free time available and would like to help, we’d love to hear from you! Whether you are looking to gain new skills and experiences, use those you already have or are just looking for a way to get out and meet new people, then we have flexible options to suit you!What will you be doing?

Volunteer Shop Assistants carry out a wide range of tasks in their roles. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, keeping our shop floor full and organised or supporting with raffle ticket sales and promoting gift aid.

How would you be supported in this role?

When you begin your role, you will receive a mix of e-learning and in-person training to get you started. Throughout the role, you will receive refresher training as required as well as ongoing support, reimbursement for role-related expenses and the opportunity to further shape the volunteering you do.

Why do we need volunteers in this role?

Age UK operates charity shops to raise funds for the delivery of services for older people in need. Volunteers play a key role in the shop team, ensuring our shops are welcoming places in the community and selling the items that are generously donated to our organisation.

We are looking for someone who’s great with people to support our centre with a variety of tasks. This will include meeting and greeting customers to our site, as well as helping out with administrative tasks and using our IT systems to support the rehoming of our pets. This role does not involve direct contact with our pets, but our Volunteer Reception Assistants provide vital support to our team so we can ultimately rehome more pets. If you enjoy meeting people and have some experience in a customer care or reception role, we’d love to hear from you.

Why we want you

We aim to give our customers a great experience every time they visit, call or email us and we need someone who can help us achieve this at our busiest times. Our rehoming centre often needs some support with administrative tasks so our busy animal care teams can prioritise spending more time caring for the pets in our care.

What you will be doing

• Meeting and greeting visitors
• Administrative tasks such as data input, photocopying, scanning, printing, filing
• Helping customers with enquiries and assisting them with paperwork
• Answering emails
• Speaking to customers on the phone
• Cash handling
• Helping to keep the reception are tidy and well-stocked

The skills you need

• Excellent customer care skills and a friendly manner
• Able to use IT and learn new systems
• Experience of an office or customer care environment is preferred
• Ability to work in a team and independently
• Willingness to learn and follow Blue Cross procedures and maintain confidentiality
