About CARAS :
Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS) is a registered charity that has been supporting refugees and asylum-seekers since 2002 empowering them to integrate and engage in the local community.
Arriving as an asylum seeker/refugee can be a disempowering experience. Difficulties with language, accessing services and overcoming prejudice are ever-present. As an organisation we are committed to work alongside refugees to overcome those challenges, and to help them build their lives.
We offer group support and targeted support work. We offer a range of activities including: ESOL classes; social and recreational activities such as youth club, drama, trips and family activities; educational support for young people; and casework and advocacy support.

About CARAS casework:
CARAS works with adults and young people of a refugee and asylum seeker background to find solutions to their problems. There are two separate sub-teams within the Casework team; young people and adults. We support adults to navigate the asylum system, understand their options, access benefits, connect with services and realise their goals. We are a non-specialist casework and advocacy service, so we work in close partnership with other local organisations to whom we refer people with more complex issues.
Using the empowerment model, our casework service embodies CARAS’ values of ‘with not for’, always striving to ensure people are armed with the information and resources they need to make decisions and take action for themselves.
About the Role:
We are currently recruiting for 2 volunteers to join our Adult Casework team.
The purpose of the Adult Casework volunteer role is to support adults with a refugee or asylum seeking background to understand their rights, access information and services, and ultimately, take control of their own lives. You will work with individuals to address problems they may face relating to, among other issues, asylum support, accessing healthcare and education, access to legal advice and finding activities and opportunities.
You will start from an understanding that individuals are always best placed to solve their own problems, and often need nothing more than to talk out a problem and find the solution themselves. When helpful, you will provide information to clarify and support to take action.
The Adult Casework team hold a support session at our office in Tooting on Thursday afternoons from 2-5.30pm. Volunteer caseworkers have 1:1 appointments, either in person or by phone, with CARAS members. These can be related to a range of topics. Currently our biggest areas of work are around housing for people seeking asylum, access to college, nursery/school places for children, referrals to mental health providers, searches and signposting to activities, finding solicitors and supporting people to apply for bus passes and ID cards. Volunteers also support with administrative tasks such as updating our databases, collating resources and creating information guides.
Adult Casework Volunteer Tasks and Responsibilities:

The purpose of the Audit & Risk Committee is to assist the Board of Trustees in fulfilling its obligations in respect of financial and governance reporting, internal control and risk. Our Audit & Risk Committee volunteers contribute to a well-run organisation, and their time and expertise help our Committee work in the best, most effective way possible.
The Board of Trustees delegates authority to the Committee to oversee the Cats Protection financial reporting process. This ensures the balance, transparency and integrity of published financial information to:
- ensure that there is a framework for accountability
- examine systems and methods of control, with particular emphasis on risk management and the effective use of risk-based outsourced internal audit receive reports from external auditors and consider rotation of audit partners
- ensure that Cats Protection is complying with statutory and regulatory requirements and good practice
- ensure implementation of recommendations from internal and external auditors
- ensure ongoing objectivity and independence
Your role will also include:
- attending Committee meetings
- reading papers
- preparing for meetings
- raising appropriate challenge or concerns undertaking any actions required in the agreed timescales
- supporting the Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee
- keeping informed about the activities of the charity and wider issues affecting the charity and the Audit & Risk Committee in particular

Choirs have shown to reduce stress levels and depression as well as creating a sense of togetherness. Working a national, regional and local level, Evolving Communities delivers local Healthwatch services and Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnerships, and consultancy/advisory work for those who commission, provide and develop health and social care services and products.
About the roles
Evolving Communities is looking to expand its Board with a view to building on the company’s success in health and social care and consultancy/advisory and so develop and expand its business into other areas where the experience of the public voice translates. This could be, for example, care, housing or education.
Key responsibilities include:
- Constructively challenging and helping to develop business proposals and strategy.
- Overseeing the performance of management in meeting agreed goals and objectives and monitoring the reporting of performance.
- Ensuring the integrity of financial information and that financial controls and systems of risk management are robust and defensible.
Who we’re looking for
The existing Board is looking for people to complement their individual and collective skill set and who are interested in and supportive of public advocacy. Candidates may have experience in either:
- Communications and marketing (Ideally within a health-focused organisation)
- Service development within the health and/or social care sectors
- Business development/sales/commercial (ideally from the health and social care sectors)
Candidates will also demonstrate a range of knowledge and skills, such as:
- Strategic thinking and planning. Able to analyse complex information, including statistical data. Able to draw logical conclusions and contribute to rational decision making.
- Entrepreneurial mindset.
- Strong communications and interpersonal skills, able to liaise effectively with a wide a range of stakeholders and audiences.
- An interest in health, social care and wellbeing issues and how these may affect people.
Time commitment and term
This is a voluntary role with a term of three years, with the option to serve for a further two years if invited to do so by the Chair. The commitment involves attending a Board meeting every other month (option to join in person or virtually), and other ad hoc meetings such as training and away days. Overall, this is a role requiring a time commitment equivalent to approximately two days per month.

The Advice Line is open Monday-Friday, 9am-3pm, with various available shifts during those times. We ask volunteers to give 1-2 hours per week on the Advice Line for a minimum of three months.

Main Role Purpose
The Advice Line HR Advisors play a vital role in providing support and guidance to working parents facing unfair treatment or discrimination in the workplace via our advice line. Volunteers will offer advice, listen empathetically, and provide information about employee rights and available resources. This role is critical in empowering parents to make informed decisions and navigate workplace challenges effectively.
Essential requirements
- Minimum CIPD level 5 Diploma in People Management with one professional reference.
- Knowledge of employment laws, regulations, and policies related to pregnancy, maternity leave, and discrimination.
- Access to a mobile phone/laptop/tablet to receive calls. You will not be charged for calls and your number will not be shared.
- Access to a reliable and secure WIFI connection. Public WIFI is not suitable for this role.
- Excellent active and empathetic listening skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey information clearly and concisely.
- A kind and welcoming telephone manner.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Comfortable using online communication tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Answer incoming phone calls to the PTS Advice Line from individuals seeking support and advice.
- Listen actively, empathise, and provide HR advice and guidance to support callers with their enquiries.
- Signpost to further information and other support organisations if necessary.
- Make referrals to our legal partner if required.
- Record all details of the call on our CRM system.
- Maintain professionalism in all interactions, adhering to all Pregnant Then Screwed guidelines and policies.

What happens when you apply

2. Application review. The PTS staff team will review your application. If suitable, you will be invited to join us for an introduction call. If we can not proceed with your application we will let you know why. Please allow up to four weeks for us to respond to your application.
3. Introduction call. This will be a 15-30 minute call online (via Google Meet) with a Support Services staff member. We’ll ask you a few questions about your application to find out more about you, as well as answering any questions you have. We’ll also get your consent to contact your referee.
4. Online training and reference check. The team will get you set up on our Volunteer Training Hub so that you can complete your online induction training. This can be done at your own pace, and we’ll check in with you after a month if it’s still not completed. We’ll also request a reference from your referee.
5. Group Induction. Once you’ve completed your online training and we’ve received a satisfactory reference, you’ll be invited to join a group induction. Inductions are hosted online at least once a month and give you a chance to meet other volunteers (new and long-standing) and ask questions.
6. Ready to roll! You’ll now be ready to volunteer, so we’ll set you up on our calling system and book in your first shift.
7. One month check in. The team will always be available, but after your first month we’ll check in to make sure everything is going ok and that you’re happy in your new volunteer role.

Arriving as an asylum seeker/refugee can be a disempowering experience. Difficulties with language, accessing services and overcoming prejudice are ever-present. As an organisation we are committed to work alongside refugees to overcome those challenges, and to help them build their lives.

About the Role:
CARAS is looking for Reading Group Volunteer to support our face-to-face study programme for young people.
The reading group is in Streatham and is an important element of a study programme for young people aged 14 to 18 who are out of formal education. The timings of the reading group sessions are as follows:

Monday afternoons 2pm to 3pm
-
Wednesday mornings 11am to 1pm.
Volunteers are required to attend either one of both sessions. Volunteers are also welcome to stay and support the more traditional English language classes either before the reading session on Mondays or after the reading session on Wednesdays.
Students will be supported to read at length and complete challenges that are adapted to their ability level.
The reading group aims to foster independence and a joy of reading among the young people and requires volunteers to learn about the young peoples' interests in order to help them select an appropriate text.
The ESOL teacher will provide volunteers with tips to support reading and understanding for emerging learners of English, such as phonics and elicitation strategies.
Volunteers will work with 1-5 students, mostly reading out loud with them or helping them to decode unfamiliar language.
Please note that ESOL classes do not run during school holidays, and we follow Wandsworth Council term dates.
Volunteer tasks and responsibilities:

Providing learners with one-to-one or small group support within the Reading Group sessions;

Helping to set up the classroom and provide learners with classroom resources;

Contributing to debriefs to inform the ESOL teacher how each student found the lesson/task and the students’ areas of greatest challenge and success;
