Why we need you?

The Halifax Charity Gala is organised by a committee of local volunteers in their spare time. The work required to plan and execute the gala is quite large & growing, with volunteer Committee Members working all year round to support the 40 or so local good causes we represent.

This all requires your friendly face & attitude on Gala Day to provide a warm welcome to our paying customers, accredited volunteers, commercial concessions, arena acts & others.

What will you be doing?

Helping to organise Calderdale’s longest-running annual not-for-profit family event! On a more practical level you’ll be the first Gala representative customers see, so will check their tickets/accreditation or take admission payment and provide them with a programme.

As a Gate Steward, on Gala Day you could be:

• Welcoming everyone with a friendly, positive attitude

• Managing entry queues, ensuring those with tickets/accreditation use the fast-track lanes, and that an exit lane is maintained

• Assisting customers with accessibility needs to navigate the queues

• Scanning eTickets in (and out, if they are likely to want to return)

• Checking hand stamps (of procession participants)

• Checking wristbands (of accredited persons)

• Checking paper tickets

• Accepting card & cash payments for people wishing to purchase admission on-the-day

• ‘Clicking’ people in & out using manual tally counters

• Providing information to customers about the Gala, entertainment timetables & other activities taking place

• Handing out printed programme booklets to customers on entry

• Issuing hand stamps for non-eTicket customers who may want to return

• Assisting in maintaining a safe & enjoyable environment, reporting any issues to your volunteer Gate Supervisor

Not every volunteer Gate Steward will be doing every task – there is flexibility to alternate between tasks on each gate. We can make reasonable adjustments for volunteers who have additional needs, conditions or disabilities which affect the tasks they are able to do.

What skills do you need?

• Basic numeracy skills, to work out total cost of admission for a group, and to provide change

• Ability to use smart mobile device (ie tablet / phone) applications for scanning eTickets (training on the specific app will be provided on the day)

• Ability to use Process Data Quickly (PDQ) ‘card’ machines to accept payments by card (training on the specific terminals will be provided on the day)

• Good interpersonal and communication skills 

• Enthusiasm & a positive can-do attitude

• Willingness to work as part of a team with a flexible approach

• Proactivity & a good initiative

• Assertive when necessary

• Ability to deal with any incidents that may occur in a cool & calm manner

Not every volunteer Gate Steward will need to have every skill – there are several positions on each gate, and your volunteer Gate Supervisor will allocate you based on your existing skills & experience.

How much time do you need to commit?

We require Gate Stewards on Gala Day – the second Saturday of June each year.

Gate Stewards need to be available for one of two shifts:

• Early from 1000 to 1530

• Late from 1130 to 1700

Though any volunteers who want to start earlier / finish later would always be welcomed to do so!

This allows to us to have all Gate Stewards on their allocated gates between 1200-1500, which is our busiest time for customers entering & leaving.

What support will you be given?

Each gate team is led by a volunteer Gate Supervisor, who will be the first point of contact for any issues locally. They will have a radio to contact Radio Control.

Each gate also has an SIA licensed Door Supervisor present from our externally contracted crowd safety service provider, who will support with any prohibited items, invalid accreditation / tickets, refusal to pay, etc.

The volunteer Gate Supervisors are in turn supported by a volunteer Gate Manager, who will visit each gate several times during the day.

A briefing will be provided at your start time, by the volunteer Gate Manager and/or a volunteer Committee Member.

We create awareness for people experiencing homelessness through media, publicity and projects.

We aim to create awareness for those in need via promotion of our work to the homeless and those in need through media and publicity. The aim is to show the majority that what they see and hear is an actual myth of what they see and believe homelessness is. We also highlight the fact that so much is wasted that can go to help other especially people in need around the globe.

PINT aims to highlight that awareness can be created by team work showing the world that so much gets wasted daily which can be contributed towards many that are suffering without on a daily basis. Our project has been in existence for 15 years now in that time we have grown from feeding tans supporting those in need in the community to covering a number of areas in London and the United Kingdom.

Volunteer Role Description (remote, unpaid)

We are looking for a Business Administration Volunteer with a hands on view of helping our organisation reach its goals and target. The role is administrative and require good communication skills as well as excellent grammar and knowledge of the English language. You will need to be able to evaluate, make reports and show metric details. This will include the compilation of databases. The Senior Researcher in an Initial Research Team is the operational lead for one
particular project at a time, they will work with the Research Manager and within
the Initial Research Framework in order to plan and execute the research. At the
conclusion of research projects the Senior Researcher is responsible for providing
an accurate research report which allows for consideration as to what happens
next with the research inline with our organisation's purpose.The role of Senior
Researcher is key in our organisation's progress and overall positive output as it is
the starting point for all of our work. It is therefore important Senior Researchers
are committed and capable.

Responsibilities may include:

• To oversee and take part in the planning and execution of initial research projects

• To supervise a team of approximately 4 research volunteers, delegating and creating tasks according to the research plan

• To work with and support the Research Manager, ensuring task coordination across platforms such as ClickUp and a high level of communication across the team 

• To ensure outputs such as literature reviews and surveys are completed to the highest standard possible, in line with ethical considerations if relevant

• To comply with and advise on using the OSCOLA referencing system

• To organise analysis of Freedom of Information request data sets

• To collaborate with the rest of the team and the RM to provide an internal research report at the end of the research project, including a summary and key recommendations for next steps

• To conduct 1-1s and lead team meetings where necessary

• To regularly communicate with team members about their task progress, welfare and support needs

Required experience and qualifications:

• To have experience in supervising or managing a group of people

• Clear communication skills and a demonstrable level of academic writing to a high standard 

• In depth knowledge of qualitative research methods and secondary data analysis, quantitative experience a plus

• To have knowledge on children’s human rights in the UK and other related areas

• To have an undergraduate degree, master’s degree a plus, in a related subject

What Does a Marshal Do? 

• Help guide and direct runners along the course, ensuring they stay on track and keep moving towards the finish line. 

• Bring the energy and excitement—your cheers and encouragement will keep runners motivated every step of the way! 

• Ensure the safety of both runners and spectators by assisting with crowd management and traffic control. 

Due to the nature of the role Marshals must be aged 18 years old and over. If you are under the age of 18, you must be accompanied by an adult. 

How Much Time Do You Need to Commit? 

Your commitment to volunteering will only be one day – the Event Day. Start and Finish timings and the length of your shift will vary depending on the role you are doing. On average shifts are around a maximum of 7-8 hours. 

Please note we will not know the exact shift timings until nearer the event date and so more accurate information will be briefed to you by the event volunteer team in the run up to the event. 

What Support Will You Be Given? 

A member of the Candlelighters team will be in touch before the event to send you a briefing about your role. You will also be allocated a team leader, who will brief, guide, support and work closely with you on the day at the event.

The Education and Skills Development Group (ESDEG) was established by local refugee leaders and social care professionals who identified critical gaps in services for people from refugee and marginalised communities. Through extensive community consultations across local estates, community centres, and schools, we have been able to provide responsive and preventative services for children, young people, families, older people, and others from socially excluded communities. We engage in and [lead] various policy networks. We have proven track record in working with schools, children and families at local level. We have been trusted by many funders to deliver projects that benefit local marginalised communities. We provide educational and community projects including supplementary schools, mentoring, ESOL classes, short breaks for children who special educational and disability (SEND), project to help local elders escape isolation and engage into physical and social activities, youth work, information and advice and support for families who have children with Send.

ESDEG is currently seeking individuals who are eager to make a meaningful contribution by volunteering their skills, experience, ideas, and passion to the organisation’s development and future direction.

· A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion

About this opportunity
We are looking to recruit a Patient and Public Involvement Volunteer, to join our project team looking at developing a payment for involvement policy. The MS Society involves people affected by MS in many aspects of work, often this involvement means that we share decision-making power with people affected by MS or we gain insights on living with MS which help shape our work. It is considered best practice across the involvement sector to reimburse people for their time when they contribute to our work in this way. The aim of this project is to establish a policy on how the MS Society should be reimbursing people for time spent on involvement activities.

Your role on the project group will be to represent the needs and opinions of the MS community on this topic. You’ll be asked to attend regular online project meetings (one meeting every 6 weeks). You’ll also be asked for feedback on ideas and the draft policy via email in between meetings. The project is expected to last until autumn 2025.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones.

About You
You’ll have an interest in the MS Society and the work that we do, as well as the enthusiasm to get involved and represent us and our values. You will understand the needs of people affected by MS.

Our fundraising events organisers use their passion for cats and people to plan cake sales, barn dances, quiz nights and everything in between.

What can you expect to be doing?

• Planning fundraising events and activities like cake sales, quiz nights and barn dances in Mid-Sussex RH15, RH16, RH17, BN6, BN45.
• Providing the treasurer with information on funds raised from fundraising events

A bit more information about this role and the team

• This is a flexible role. The amount of time you offer can work to your availability and convenience.
• There may be opportunities for your activities to be fully remote and/or admin based if you'd prefer.
• You will need your own transport if you wish to attend events, ideally a car or van since items, stock and equipment will usually be needed.
• We ask that you complete training to support you in your role. This can be completed online if you have access to the internet and the necessary device (computer/laptop/tablet etc). Support can be offered or paper versions of much of the training if needed.
