Volunteer Roles

Roles are assigned on the day, but here’s what you might be doing:

• Event Village Volunteer: Greet participants, hand out t-shirts and medals, support recycling stations, and help create a welcoming atmosphere.
• Route Marshal: Guide and cheer on walkers along the route, ensuring they stay on track and feel encouraged.
• Back Marker: Walk the full 10-mile route behind the last participants, offering support and removing signage as you go.

About CARAS:

Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS) is a registered charity that has been supporting refugees and asylum-seekers since 2002 empowering them to integrate and engage in the local community.

About the CARAS ESOL Team:

Our award-winning ESOL project offers English language classes to adults at a wide range of levels. This provides vital skills, opportunities and social contact and is crucial for enabling people to attend college and access other services in the future.

About the Role:

CARAS is looking for volunteer ESOL Teaching Assistants to support our face-to-face adult ESOL classes in Tooting. Volunteers in this role are required to commit to at least one 2-hour session every Wednesday during these times: 

• Mondays ESOL 9:30 to 13:30

• Tuesday 9:30 to 11:30

• Tuesday One-to-one employability and language learning support 15:00 to 17:00 

Please note that ESOL classes do not run during school holidays, and we follow Wandsworth Council term dates.

Volunteer tasks and responsibilities:

• Providing learners with one-to-one or small group support within ESOL classes; 

• Helping to set up the classroom and provide learners with classroom resources;

• Attending and contributing to volunteer debriefs after each session; 

• Making use of any community languages you may know to help students during the class; 

• Working collaboratively as a team and helping to shape the project; 

• Supporting people to develop their knowledge and skills, encouraging and inspiring participants to reach their full potential; 

• Assisting participants to recognise and celebrate their achievements; 

• Following CARAS’ confidentiality, safeguarding, health & safety, equal opportunities, data management and all other policies as relevant.  

Requirements: 

Essential: 

• To be 18 years or older; 

• Able to travel to our community centre in Tooting (travel expenses can be reimbursed); 

• An interest in education and English language teaching; 

• To be non-judgemental and able to engage with people from diverse backgrounds; 

• To be reliable and punctual; 

• Excellent communication skills, especially with people who are new to English; 

• The ability to volunteer on Mondays or Wednesdays during Wandsworth term time for a minimum of three months; 

• Currently resident in the UK; has asylum-seeker or refugee status 

• *Able to provide five years’ worth of addresses, and willing to undergo a DBS check; 

• Able to attend volunteer induction training (online) prior to start of role. 

 *DBS and proof of residency is not necessary if you are a CARAS community member who is more recently arrived in the UK. 

Desirable: 

• Knowledge of community languages, such as Arabic, Tigrinya, Amharic, Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Kurdish, Somali or Spanish. 

Through volunteering with us you will:

Why we need you:

This role is vital to the work of FareShare Merseyside. You will be preparing and cooking meals for our volunteers and staff, cleaning down the kitchen, and adhering to allergen, HACCP, and other compliance checks.

For the role of the Volunteer Kitchen Assistant, a background in food is desirable but not essential. If you have experience working in a kitchen, a passion for food and sustainability, and a willingness to learn new skills whilst working in a small team, you would be a great fit for this role!

What will I be doing?

• Helping to plan, create, and cook meals from surplus food for volunteer and staff lunches.
• Carrying out routine kitchen cleaning, health and safety checks, and completing all relevant paperwork.
• Assisting with one- off corporate or fundraising events.

The Professional Development Programme with Quilombo UK runs over a period of 16 weeks, is UNPAID and requires a minimum of 12 hours of commitment per week across Monday and Friday.

Volunteering in the shop

Our West Bridgford Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

A Brief History of the Spa Theatre Company 

The Company was founded in 1982 as a young people’s group. From 1982 to 1991, there was a Senior Company, but at present the Senior Company is on hold.   

The Advertised Position 

The role advertised is for one person to provide support to the Director of the Junior Company.

The Company is primarily a “teaching” organisation, offering a high standard of teaching in speech, drama, music and dance. 

The Company meets on a Tuesday evening at Aylesford School, Warwick, for tuition and rehearsal sessions.  We also perform a musical at a local theatre, usually in April/May.  

Key Attributes required 

The Assistant Director is primarily in a learning and support situation and will be developing their ability to coach and train young people of varying ability.  They must be flexible, and should be prepared to learn from, and assist the Production Team. Candidates must be prepared to undertake a DBS check (Spa Theatre Company will cover the cost of this) and complete safeguarding training. 

Duties 

The Assistant Director will: 

A. report directly to the Director; 

B. take their instructions from the Director and where necessary the wider Production Team;  

C. demonstrate an ability to relate to all ages and to show enthusiasm and encouragement; 

D. help to ensure the safety and well-being of the children attending sessions. 

Remuneration  

The Spa Theatre Company is a Registered Charity for its work in the tuition of young people. This post is a volunteer role, however, we do offer a small honorarium which will reflect the general age and inexperience of the postholder.

We are appealing for a Volunteer to help at our Lyde Green Stroke Support Group weekly. 

Every year 950 people in Bristol and South Glos will experience a stroke: people of all ages…and from all backgrounds. Bristol After Stroke is the local charity that helps those people get their lives back on track – though our groups, activities, mentoring, counselling and so much more.

Our volunteers do a variety of things each week from helping with the room set up, serving hot drinks and supporting the activities that are planned eg music, poetry or seated exercise sessions like Yoga or Zumba. The most important part of the role of the volunteer though is to talk to group members, encourage them to get involved and generally help to promote a supportive, happy atmosphere that contributes to a sense of wellbeing.

- Our Volunteers provide help and support to our Group Leaders and group members at our weekly stroke support groups.

The materials include all types of evidence, articles, journals, newspaper columns, local and global news stories. 

• The researcher will help to collect information that can be used as an evidence base to help inform future activities, and also in exhibitions, workshops, and community events. 

• We are looking for a self-starter who can source, collect, and share relevant materials independently. You will also be working closely with our Professional Development Programme participants in relevant areas such as Marketing and PR.

• Provide written reports as and when required. To undertake additional duties as required for the role.

Arts at Home brings conversations about art to people as a tool to tackle loneliness and isolation. • Content Creation: Assist the Project Leader draft engaging text for promotional materials (flyers, social media posts, website content).
• Social Media Support: Help schedule and post content on relevant social media platforms (e.g., Facebook groups, local community pages).
• Community Outreach: Identify local community groups, centres, schools, and organisations that could benefit from our club, and assist with distributing promotional materials.
• Information Gathering: Research relevant online forums, notice boards, and events where we can promote the club.

Action for Refugees in Lewisham works to relieve poverty and isolation amongst refugees, asylum seekers and other vulnerable migrants in Lewisham. At the Rainbow Club supplementary school we aim to help children between the ages of 4 and 11 to improve their literacy, numeracy and social skills in a friendly and supportive environment.  We need your skills and enthusiasm to assist the teacher in the delivery of a literacy and numeracy class and work with other volunteers to develop a programme of recreational activities. The Rainbow Club runs on Saturday mornings during term-time.

Your duties will include:

• Arriving punctually for the 9am briefing by the Rainbow Club Headteacher;
• Working in a team with other volunteers and teachers to deliver literacy, numeracy, arts, sport activities – this includes ensuring children remain engaged throughout the lesson and carry out set tasks as instructed by the teacher;
• Working one-to-one with specific children if and when required;
• Filing classroom work and homework in children’s individual files and keeping all materials and resources tidy and properly stored;
• Liaising with parents as and when required for example distributing leaflets and news about future meetings and events and also assisting with parents' day;
• Following the teacher’s policies on discipline and classroom management;
• Supervising the children during break times;
• Supporting the children during class trips;
• Ensuring classrooms are clean and tidy at the end of each day – this may include being part of a regular team rota;
• Providing feedback and comments to the Rainbow Club Headteacher when required.

You play a vital role in our high street presence, helping us raise awareness for Rainbows, sell our fantastic products, and generate crucial funds to support our hospice's incredible work. As a Retail Shop Volunteer, you'll be part of a dynamic team that serves as the friendly, professional and welcoming face of Rainbows for every visitor who walks through our doors.

Typical tasks the role could involve:

• Create a warm, welcoming atmosphere: Deliver top-notch customer service that makes every visitor feel special. Enjoy the thrill of serving customers on our tills, handling payments, and issuing receipts.
• Be a gift aid guru: Advise customers of our gift aid scheme and help boost our fundraising efforts.

Drivers deliver food to our Community Food Members which is vital to ensuring the food gets to people who need it.

What will I be doing?

• Safely driving vans to deliver and collect food
• Loading and unloading food orders, planning routes and completing paperwork
• Responsibly driving the van, cleaning the van, reporting any issues or accidents
• Representing FareShare in a courteous and professional manner and accompanied by a Volunteer Driver’s Assistant.

What you need to be:

• Hold a full driving licence with low point
• Over 21 with 3 years driving experience
• Confidence to drive a medium-sized van
• Ability to perform physical manual handling tasks safely including loading/unloading food from the van
• Ability to complete paperwork and follow directions via Sat Nav system/map
• Adaptable and flexible. Managing surplus food is unpredictable and tasks vary
• Positive, friendly and personable
• Work well in a team and on your own
• Follow health and safety policies & procedures
