Cattery Assistant

Our Branch

At Apsley Cattery we have around 30 volunteers, supported by our Animal Welfare Team. There will be lots of hands on contact with the cats, including cleaning and feeding at the cattery and/or socializing of the cats in our care. You would be part of a team that would make a real difference to the lives of our cats.

We are looking for volunteers to help care for the cats in our cattery to keep them fed, watered, and clean. You will learn new skills, and make our cats very happy whilst they wait for their forever home.

By volunteering at our Cattery, you would be helping us get through the essential tasks. As well as assisting with their feeding and the cleaning of the cattery, you will also be working closely with the team allowing you to get more involved and learn new skills. This opportunity to help our cats is extremely rewarding, knowing that you have improved their welfare and made them happy whilst they are waiting for their forever home.

Volunteer Cattery Assistant responsibilities

• Preparing and providing food and water for the cats.

• Cleaning, and maintaining the cattery to a high standard of cleanliness, so our cats are as comfortable as possible.

• Attending to the exercise and grooming needs of the cats.

• Following the health and safety procedures in place at the centre and ensuring that they are always observed.

What we are looking for in a volunteer Cattery Assistant

• Someone with knowledge of cats and can read their behaviour.

• Is comfortable around cats and has a patient and understanding nature.

• Can carry out physical tasks.

• Someone who is flexible and can offer an ongoing commitment predominately on a Morning or Afternoon for at least 3 hours.

• Able to work within a team but also capable of working with minimal supervision.

• Volunteers need to be aged 18 or over.

We are looking for volunteers who can commit to at least one morning session per week to assist the Animal Welfare Team with cleaning and feeding at the cattery and/or socialising of the cats in our care.

Our voluntary roles are subject to an informal interview and trial period. We will ask you to provide contact details for two referees, and dependent on the position, you may need to sign an agreement and undergo specific training before starting the role.

We are Alex, The Leukodystrophy Charity (Alex TLC).

Alex TLC is a trusted and experienced organisation offering support and information for all those affected by a genetic leukodystrophy. Formerly ALD Life, an internationally recognised centre of excellence for people affected by adrenoleukodystrophy and adrenomyeloneuropathy, the charity was established in 2004.

Due to popular demand, we extended our services to support all leukodystrophies in 2019 and became Alex, The Leukodystrophy Charity.

Like many other small charities, we have grown organically from an informal support group to the recognised voice for adrenoleukodystrophy patients and their families. Our charitable work is supported by our chain of five charity shops across south east London.

With scant resources we are always in need of trustworthy and reliable volunteers to assist retail staff.

Could you spare a few hours a week?

Key Duties

What your role will involve

• Taking part in activities alongside disabled young people. You could be joining creative activities, movement or sports session, trips out into the local community or seasonal themed activities.
• Helping to set up the activities at the start of the day, clear away at the end and keep activities safe, clean and running smoothly throughout.
• Helping to welcome young people to the group, find their way around and between activities, enjoy breaks and lunchtime and generally have a great day with the team and Sense.

A basic / enhanced Disclosure & Barring check will be required for this volunteer role.

• Fun and friendly and confident to meet and spend time with disabled young people.

• Induction information to prepare you for your role, a briefing at the start of each event, and lots of on-site support and guidance from our experienced staff team who will be running the day
• Agreed out of pocket expenses to be reimbursed, in line with Sense policy
• The chance to get to know new people, try new activities in your local community and to have lots of fun taking part together
• To develop new skills and knowledge about communicating and working with children and young people with complex communication needs and multi-sensory impairment
• To know you’re part of a passionate and committed team making a big difference to how young people can get the most out of both new and favourite activities and to have a great time together.
• If you are 16 or 17 we will ask to make contact with a parent or other appropriate adult to share details of your volunteering role, timings and contact / emergency information.

For everyone living with complex disabilities. For everyone who is deafblind. Sense is here to offer personalised support to help people communicate and experience the world. We believe that no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, should be isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Our experts offer support that’s tailored to the individual needs of each person, whether that’s at our centres, through our holidays and short breaks, or in people’s own homes. In addition to practical support, we also provide information to families, and campaign for the rights of people with complex disabilities to take part in life.

Volunteers add real value to Sense, bringing their passion, enthusiasm and fresh perspectives to the work that we do. We believe that volunteers enable us to bring people together and provide opportunities for people with complex disabilities to communicate and experience the world.
