The Womankind helpline offers emotional support to women struggling with their mental health and past experiences. Helpline volunteers offer empathy and nonjudgmental listening to the women who contact us over the phone and webchat.

Womankind is an established charity helping hundreds of women every year to improve their mental health and wellbeing.  Our wonderful volunteers are the backbone of our organisation. We need you!

Whether you are looking for work experience, community, to learn, develop new skills or fulfil a passion to help other women, volunteer with us!

Training 

Our training comes with over 30 years’ experience of working with women’s mental health and will fully equip you to work on our helpline.

Over 6 sessions, our training covers a range of topics from women’s mental health to sexual violence and domestic abuse.

The dates and structure of our autumn training will be:

• Session One - Friday 10th October – 10am-4pm at our offices in Brunswick Square

• Session Two – Sunday 12th October – 10am-4pm at our offices in Brunswick Square

• Skills Practice - week commencing 13th October - 2-hour remote skills practice at home to be arranged with your training triad

• Session Three - Friday 24th October – 10am-4pm at our offices in Brunswick Square

• Session Four – Sunday 26th October – 10am-4pm at our offices in Brunswick Square

• Skills Practice - week commencing 27th October - 2-hour remote skills practice at home to be arranged with your training triad

• Session Five - Monday 3rd November – 7-9pm online

• Webchat Skills Practice - week commencing 3rd November - 2-hour remote skills practice at home to be arranged with your training triad

• Session Six - Monday 10th November – 7-9pm online

• Post-training Interview – to be arranged on a one-to-one basis after 10th November 

The Role 

Once you have successfully completed the training, you will be offered a place on our helpline. Each volunteer works the same shift every week, with the same volunteers – so you can make friends and support each other on shift!

You can come into our offices to do your shift or work remotely if you have a confidential and quiet space at home.

Your role will be to offer empathic, non-judgemental listening support to the women who contact us on the phone or through our webchat, with calls or chats lasting up to 50 minutes. You will also take more administrative calls, where you will talk about our counselling services and calls where you need to signpost to other services. Our training will fully equip you for this as well.

A three-hour shift includes: 

30 minutes to check in with your supervisor at the beginning 

2 hours taking calls or chats on the helpline 

30-45 minutes to debrief with the other volunteers and your supervisor at the end of your shift

You will also be expected to attend group supervision with all the other volunteers, which runs in the evening on alternating Mondays and Wednesdays each month.

There will always be a supervisor available during your shifts to support you, and we often run extra training to support the work you do on the helpline.

You 

We are looking for volunteers who are enthusiastic and interested in supporting other women to improve their mental health and wellbeing. You will be honest, friendly and reliable with good communication skills, as well as a non-judgmental and patient listener.

The helpline role can be challenging and emotionally demanding at times. Therefore, we need women who have adequate life experience and feel emotionally resilient enough to take on the role. We welcome volunteers with personal experience of mental health and other relevant issues, but we require you to have had a one-year period of stability at least before starting the training.

While most of our helpline opening hours are during the daytime, we have two evenings shifts on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The role: Our scholars are eager to meet graduates and professionals who can support them in achieving their ambitions. Mentors are mainly responsible for providing support and career advice to pupils. Mentors must also be committed to supporting us at our events, which take place in the evenings and on Saturdays throughout the term. These events include our scholar enrichment days, our parent and pupil information sessions and our volunteer social events which are held in London. 

Availability: Mentors must be available for approximately 2-3 hours a month to meet with their mentee, and discuss via phone, email or in person. There is a minimum commitment of one year (three terms).

In addition to this, you will need to support a minimum of 2 events throughout the year. Enrichment and skill-building events for our scholars usually take place in the evenings and at weekends, with events ranging from 2-8 hours in length.

Location: Mentoring sessions and events can take place online or in person.

Responsibilities: 

• Working collaboratively with parents to give students guidance and advice on how to achieve their aspirations

• Informing pupils of opportunities to them so that they can achieve their aspirations

• Meeting with pupils for one to one mentoring sessions

• Supporting pupils with university, sixth form or job applications

• Monitoring and reporting on each pupils progress

• Giving feedback to parents and programme coordinators

• Working collaboratively with other tutors and mentors

• Supporting at events including:

  • Collaborate effectively with other volunteers within the events team

  • Assist with setting up and clearing up at events

  • Support workshop facilitators with managing groups of young people or parents

  • Assist with the coordination of lunch or refreshments for attendees

  • Assist the event coordinator with ensuring the health and safety of attendees and overall risk management at events

  • Give feedback to the event coordinators and programme managers at the end of each event.

Person specification:

• Be passionate and committed to tackling educational inequality

Barry High Street is one of our longest standing shops. It is also one of our smallest shops, but boasts incredible volumes of donations from our supporters.

The shop is supported by a fantastic team of volunteers who work incredibly hard to turn over the high volumes of stock.

Commitment:Our shops operate Monday-Saturday, 9am-4:45pm and we appreciate any time you can spare, but ideally at least 2 hours per week.

Activities include:

•  Sorting and pricing donations according to our guidelines (or your own knowledge if applicable);
•  Preparing items for sale, including steaming, ironing, tagging and labelling;

Unify Giving CIC – UK Based

Unify Giving is building more than just a platform — we’re building a movement around tech for good and social impact. We need a Community Builder to help us connect and grow that movement both inside and outside the organisation.

Café VI is an inclusive and accessible space, in line with RNIB Scotland’s mission to support people with sight loss and promote a sense of community in everyday life. The café aims to provide a welcoming environment for the local community and to help raise awareness of sight loss through its design and operation.

The café is staffed by a team of dedicated volunteers, including both sighted and partially sighted individuals, working together to deliver friendly service and foster inclusion. We are looking for friendly and enthusiastic volunteers to assist in the running of the café and drop in centre for blind and partially sighted people. We require help in the kitchen, preparing food, cleaning and waiting on tables and assisting community members by chatting with them, sighted guiding and assisting members to take part in activities.

A passion for cooking is desirable but not essential. Experience in cash handling and how to use a cash register would be advantageous. Our aim is to move to a contactless process but we're not at that point yet.

The café is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11am until 3pm.
