No one should die because they needed first aid and didn’t get it. St John Ambulance teaches people first aid so they can be the difference between life and death, and you can help us do this.

As Unit Manager you will be responsible for the overall management of your St John Ambulance Youth unit. You will do this by leading weekly meetings, organising other youth development activities and actively participating in the recruitment, training and retention of the young people and volunteers in your unit. You will ensure that they have a positive and rewarding experience in St John Ambulance, by equipping them with the necessary skills to fulfil our vision; ‘Everyone who needs it should receive first aid from those around them. No one should suffer for the lack of trained first aiders.’

This role is ideal for someone who has some management experience and wants to enhance their skills while doing invaluable work. This role is exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitations Offenders Act.

Our People Team is looking for a volunteer to help enhance the efficiency and accuracy of people-related processes related to data. By ensuring the secure and organised management of confidential documents, you will play a vital role in reinforcing compliance and safeguarding our ways of working.

What will you be doing

The Volunteer will assist with various People activity, including:

• Being a critical eye in reviewing and updating existing people-related processes and documentation to maintain and increase compliance and accuracy.
• Managing and documenting confidential and sensitive mail delivered for the People Team at the Bristol office; this can include Criminal Record Certificates, Access to Work information as well as Deduction of Payment Orders from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
• Ensuring compliance with data protection regulations when dealing with sensitive information.
• Supporting the HR Coordinators with general people-related tasks that contribute to organisational efficiency.
• Assisting with aspects of our recent SharePoint migration, ensuring documents are properly organised, categorised, and maintained in line with best practices.
• Supporting the People Team with the new ways of working in relation to GDPR admin, ensuring historic records are updated, cleansed and compliant with data protection requirements.

Your availability

Ideally, you are in the Bristol area as it would make it easier for you to volunteer with us at our Bristol office, although we can discuss this.

We’d like you to join the team for up to 12 months, with the possibility of extending it further.

However, we are flexible and open to chat about how much time you can commit to the role. Your enthusiasm and expertise are important to us, and we appreciate your insights into what will be needed.

Across the UK, our 270 local groups play a vital part in supporting people affected by MS. They provide sense of belonging, unity and friendship. And they deliver services and support for their local MS community.

We are looking to recruit an Administration Volunteer for the Bristol and South Gloucestershire Group. Our Administration Volunteers are the linchpin for our local groups’ activities. They act as the first point of contact and they make sure all relevant information is circulated to other volunteers and members. And they play an important role in keeping our data and details up to date to comply with data protection legislation.

In this role you’ll develop your administration and organisation skills. Most importantly you’ll be help your local group run efficiently, so they can keep providing valuable services to our MS community. 

Time Commitment

We estimate this role will need around 2 hours a week. Our roles are flexible and aim to fit around you. Time commitments for this role may vary depending on your activities. This is an ongoing role.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.

About you

You’ll have an interest in the MS Society and the work that we do, as well as the enthusiasm to represent both us and our values locally. You will understand the needs of people affected by MS in your area and be sympathetic to the needs and motivations of volunteers. You’ll be confident using Microsoft Office, the internet and email. You’ll be able to apply disability, equality and inclusion practices and understand and apply our risk management system. Ideally you’ll understand the local area and organisations that provide local services.

You will be reliable and easy to contact and you need to live in or near the area the group to carry out this role.

Switchboard LGBTQIA+ exists to provide members of the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as their friends, family and those supporting them, with a listening service that they can contact via phone, instant message and email between the hours of 10am to 10pm every day.

We are happy to talk to service users about any topic they wish. Topics we often talk to service users about include: sexual health, safer sex, relationships, coming-out, gender identity, transitioning, mental health, experiences of hate crimes, support for meeting other LGBTQIA+ people and making friends, and much more.

However, we want to also be upfront and transparent about the fact that not all of our conversations are positive or constructive. Our volunteers can also be exposed to abuse from the public, manipulative callers, sexual fantasies and safeguarding concerns.

Training for POC volunteers

At Switchboard we are working to ensure that our volunteer membership reflects everyone within the LGBTQIA+ community. We want service users to be able to speak with volunteers who can empathise with their experiences and volunteers to connect with folks from a wide range of different backgrounds, cultures and identities.

To help enable us to do this even more, we have created brand new dedicated training groups for different identities within the LGBTQIA+ community. 

This group training group is specifically set up for people of colour. By joining this group, you'll undertake our Core Acceptance Training programme which equips you with the skills needed to support those contacting us via phone and instant message. Our hope is that this safe space enables you to freely ask questions, put our listening toolkit into practice and discuss approaches to different scenarios in an engaging, enjoyable way.

Who are we looking for?

To ensure we can provide a high quality service to those who contact us, we are looking for volunteers who:

• Simply put, like communicating and chatting with other people (you’re most likely a people-person who feels energised by this type of communication)

• Feel comfortable taking calls and speaking over the phone to people you do not already know

• Are familiar with different instant messaging platforms (such as WhatsApp and other chat tools) and the types of communication they might receive

• Are able to read between the lines to decipher messages

• Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised

Purpose of role:

• Undertaking a variety of tasks within the catering facility including serving hot & cold food, clearing tables, refreshment service, operating the till & cash handling 
• Previous experience in a domestic or catering environment would be advantageous but not essential. 
• This role may involve basic food preparation i.e. salads, sandwiches 
• This role will also include acting as our Front of House Team
• You may be required to sign post people wishing to access the service.

Key Activities:

•  Customer care skills, able to work in a busy environment. 
• Undertaking a variety of tasks within the catering facility including; serving hot & cold food, clearing tables, refreshment service, operating the till & cash handling good  
• This role will involve basic food preparation. 
• Ensuring all areas are kept clean and tidy to always promote a safe working environment. 
• Ability to promote a welcoming environment where our colleagues, clients and customers receive great service. 
• Awareness of Hygiene standards 
• You will be required to work under your own initiative and also as part of a team and be polite and friendly 
• A 'can do' attitude, prepared to help out the rest of the team in a willing and positive manner

• To perform your volunteering role to the best of your ability
• To follow the Nightingales Hub procedures and standards, including health and safety and equal opportunities, in relation to our staff, volunteers and clients
• To maintain the confidential information of Nightingales Hub and of our clients; adhering to Nightingales Hub policies and procedures
• To meet the time commitments and standards which have been mutually agreed and to give reasonable notice so other arrangements can be made when this is not possible

Person Specification

Education Knowledge and Experience:

• Ability to work with professional boundaries  
• Good communication skills 
• Excellent time management skills, and an ability to work on own initiative prioritising accordingly.
• Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality
