Warehouse Volunteer Volunteer Roles

We are seeking volunteers to assist in our busy surplus food warehouse, where the role includes:

• Ensuring food quality and safety by checking use by and best before dates.

• Sorting and unpacking deliveries, categorising and recording food quantities.

• Assisting our Community Food Member partners with food order collections during scheduled visits to our base. 

• Maintaining high standards of health and safety and food hygiene during sessions.

• Helping with cleaning and other tasks identified by warehouse staff.

The opportunity provides you with skills and training to boost your employability by gaining experience in the food industry, warehousing and customer service, or just enables you to give back to your community, whilst tackling food waste and climate change. It is also perfect for someone who is looking for a practical activity to help boost or maintain fitness.

FareShare is a national charity that fights food poverty and climate change by tackling food waste.

We source food that is surplus to requirements from food retailers and manufacturers, and engage many volunteers to help redistribute this to local Community Food Members (CFMs), who provide meals to people and families experiencing food poverty.

We operate from our FareShare Greater Manchester regional centre, which is based on New Smithfield Market in Openshaw, and has been run by EMERGE 3Rs since 2008.

This role is vital to the work of FareShare; ensuring that the food delivered to our warehouse is correctly sorted, labelled and organised into the orders placed by our charities and community groups.

You will be required to complete introductory sessions before you are confirmed in the role.

Why am I needed?

Our shops depend on a regular supply of quality donated stock.  As some shops receive more donations than others, we need drivers to move stock between our shops to ensure they are all fully stocked.

Our fantastic supporters rely on stock donations being collected from their door when they are unable to bring it to us. Here at Tenovus Cancer Care we receive donated stock in many different ways, and this includes us collecting stock from supporters at their front door and picking up collections from local business partners.  

All of this vital work needs to happen for us to raise more money to help cancer patients and their families.

What will I be doing?

Dependant on your volunteer location, duties may include but may not be limited to:

Predominantly assisting the Retail team in moving stock between shops

Taking this donated stock to shops and to the Warehouse

Delivering donation bags to homes in selected areas and collecting the full bags on an agreed day

Collecting donations at businesses where our ‘Donation Stations’ are located

Offering feedback to the Retail team on how to improve the collections service.

What skills and qualities do I need?

An enthusiasm for the work of Tenovus Cancer Care

A good level of fitness and enjoy being outside

Good communication skills to be able to respond positively with any queries from members of the pubic

Reliability, honesty and like helping as part of a team

This role would suit a proactive and outgoing person who enjoys meeting with others

The ability to drive and have a good size car or van is essential for the driving role if based at one of our shops. You will need to check with your car insurers that you are insured for business use before starting with us (this can usually be arranged at no extra cost) and your driving licence and business insurance will need to be checked before you can start.

How much time do I need to commit?

This can be discussed with the Retail team and hours are very flexible to fit around you – please note on your application how much time you can give.

What support and training will I be given?

A dedicated member of staff will be on hand to offer you advice, support and guidance in your role.

Where will I be based?

You’ll be based at one of our Tenovus Cancer Care shops across Wales and England, with regular travel around agreed areas. You must have access to your own vehicle.

The Volunteer Role

The role will be but not limited to:

• Sorting donations

Working times

• Location: FARA Warehouse TW4 6BU
• Online working times: 08:00– 16:00 Monday to Friday.
• As many hours as you want to give, ideally in four-hour slots on set day / days in the week.

As the Secretary for our Board of Trustees, you are part of a team providing a vital support function in your local community, ensuring a dignified experience to anyone visiting or anyone who comes into contact with Irlam and Cadishead foodbank.

Key Tasks:

As a Trustee:

• Work with the other trustees to provide management support and direction.
• Ensure that the foodbank meets legal and best practice standards; in the care of clients and volunteers, as a registered charity, carrying out our purpose towards stopping hunger in our local area, complying with our governing document and the law, and managing our resources.
• Liaise with the Trussell Trust on a rotating basis with the other Trustees.
• Understand the working of the foodbank distribution centres, warehouse and donations and attend at least 2 sessions a year.

As Secretary of Trustees:

• Ensure that there is a record of all Trustee Board correspondence
• Ensure that arrangements for Trustee meetings are communicated to the rest of the board, including when and where, inviting trustees to send agenda items and providing to the board with previous meeting minutes in good time prior to the meeting.
• Ensure that Trustees use and implement the NCVO Governance Wheel to ensure we meet best practice for charity governance.
• Ensure decisions and policy creation/adaption are clearly recorded in formal minutes, with who will do what and when as agreed by the Trustee board.
• Ensure formal minutes are taken, produced and distributed to the rest of the trustees in good time, as well as ensuring previous meeting minutes are signed by the chair once approved by the trustee board.
• Check that actions have been taken following decisions at previous meetings.
• Ensure the trustee board meets its legal obligations, including reporting, meeting charity and company law, as well as insurance requirements.
• Ensure all relevant stakeholders are informed of the Annual Membership Meeting (AMM)
• To ensure that the annual report (to go alongside annual accounts) is produced and sent to the Charity Commission of England & Wales.
