About East Durham College

East Durham College is a college deeply rooted within its local communities. Working across three sites in Peterlee and Houghall, we provide a broad and diverse range of education and training to almost 6,000 students each year. We have been consistently rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted, most recently in April 2024, when we were also judged to be ‘Outstanding’ in the areas of Behaviours & Attitudes and Personal Development.

We deliver a broad curriculum, offering vocational provision, A Levels, apprenticeships and T Levels for our learners aged 16-18, as well as vocational, academic and professional development provision for adult learners. Our provision also includes higher education, courses for those with high needs and for those aged 14-16, making us one of the largest providers of foundation learning in the county.

About the roles

Our Board of Governors is known as ‘the Corporation’. Governors play a vital role in shaping our strategic direction and in helping to set our organisational culture and ethos whilst demonstrating our values of excellence, respectful, sustainable and student-focused.

Led by our Chair, James Bromiley, we have recently completed an external review of governance in which our Corporation was recognised as high performing, and one which puts the success and well-being of students first.

As a governor of East Durham College, you will have the chance to shape the future of education and training across the region, supporting Scott Bulllock and his senior leaders to develop and deliver a strategy which positively impacts the futures of thousands of students, local employers and our local communities.

You’ll have the chance to be involved in the further growth of our college, support the development of new and innovative curriculum and help safeguard the financial future of the organisation.

Who we are looking for

As we enter a new academic year, and having already appointed new Governors recently, this recruitment process represents an opportunity for us to identify new board colleagues who can help bring the skills and expertise we believe we are still lacking as a board. We plan to welcome new candidates to our full Corporation as well as to our Audit & Risk Committee.

Firstly, we will be welcoming applications from qualified, experienced finance professionals. You will be working at a senior level and be able to bring a curious approach to our financial position and related reporting.

In addition to this, we will also be welcoming applications from candidates who have experience in the following areas:

• Qualified audit, risk and compliance professionals to help us safeguard our financial health and remain compliant.
• Those with business development acumen who have experience of income diversification.
• Candidates with expertise in cyber security, data protection and IT systems.

Candidates could have experience at a senior level in a range of sectors and professional contexts, which may include educational settings, the public sector, corporate settings and those based within local employers.

Our Programme Delivery Volunteers work directly with groups of young people to help build and maintain their confidence, skills, motivation, and wellbeing. You might be helping Trust colleagues in the areas of planning, delivery or facilitation of group sessions and activities, bringing your expertise to enhance the experience for our young people.

Sharing Seeds

We are a non-profit organization empowering rural communities in Nepal through organic Arabica coffee farming, beekeeping, and women-led community tourism.

Across Nepali villages, many young people migrate to other countries in search of better income, often working in harsh, risky conditions for very little pay—and sometimes losing their lives. At Sharing Seeds, we encourage local youth and women to rediscover opportunities at home by engaging in sustainable cash crop farming and community-based enterprises.

By promoting modern agricultural practices, we help farmers transform unused land into thriving organic coffee and beekeeping ventures. At the same time, we create fair-wage opportunities for rural women, enabling financial independence and stronger families.

Based in Sarangkot Pandeli village near Pokhara, Nepal’s tourism capital, Sharing Seeds is building a future where communities flourish through sustainable farming, women’s empowerment, and authentic tourism experiences.

Graphic Designer (Leaflet)

This is the role for the interested creative volunteer with great experience in graphic design, who can create an outstanding tour flyer for our day tour, which will be combined of mountain biking and visiting our community for the local Nepali lunch and coffee tasting experience, which is produced locally by us. We need this sticker to design and print as a flyer, which will be (12 inch by 18 inch ) and one-third of an A4 design leaflet.

Action for Refugees in Lewisham works to relieve poverty and isolation amongst refugees, asylum seekers and other vulnerable migrants in Lewisham. At the Rainbow Club supplementary school we aim to help children between the ages of 4 and 11 to improve their literacy, numeracy and social skills in a friendly and supportive environment.  We need your skills and enthusiasm to assist the teacher in the delivery of a literacy and numeracy class and work with other volunteers to develop a programme of recreational activities. The Rainbow Club runs on Saturday mornings during term-time.

Your duties will include:

• Arriving punctually for the 9am briefing by the Rainbow Club Headteacher;
• Working in a team with other volunteers and teachers to deliver literacy, numeracy, arts, sport activities – this includes ensuring children remain engaged throughout the lesson and carry out set tasks as instructed by the teacher;
• Working one-to-one with specific children if and when required;
• Filing classroom work and homework in children’s individual files and keeping all materials and resources tidy and properly stored;
• Liaising with parents as and when required for example distributing leaflets and news about future meetings and events and also assisting with parents' day;
• Following the teacher’s policies on discipline and classroom management;
• Supervising the children during break times;
• Supporting the children during class trips;
• Ensuring classrooms are clean and tidy at the end of each day – this may include being part of a regular team rota;
• Providing feedback and comments to the Rainbow Club Headteacher when required.

Our amazing team of vibrant & diverse volunteers helps us run our retail shops, raising money for vulnerable children, young people and families across the UK.

Our retail shops are the face of our charity on the high-street and in local communities. Stock Room Volunteers sort and manage donated items in-store. Your role will be key in organising stock into the differing departments ready for delivery to the shop floor, ensuring our stores are always filled with quality stock.

It would be great if you could volunteer one shift a week (or even more if you want) but we’re always happy to be flexible to work around your availability.

We're organising a new support group in Hull and are looking for a group facilitator. Would you be interested in taking on this role?

The primary purpose of this flexible volunteering role is to support us as peer support group facilitators for support groups for those affected by brain tumours.

We want to ensure that volunteering with us is not daunting, so the exact tasks might vary depending on your circumstances. However, some typical tasks may include: 

• Facilitating peer support group sessions

Teachers and educational facilitators wanted to help East London Waterworks Park deliver its environmental learning goals.

East London Waterworks Park is a volunteer-led charity that has won a 2024 New London Architecture award and raised £2m towards buying land from the Department for Education to transform the 14-acre Thames Water Depot on Lea Bridge Road on the border of Waltham Forest and Hackney, into a new biodiverse park with natural swimming ponds, forest schools and community spaces. 

We are seeking experienced teachers and educational facilitators to lead workshops and deliver engaging environmental education sessions to children and young people. Sessions may take place at schools or around the perimeter of the site we want to transform into East London Waterworks Park.

This role would include:

• Leading hands-on outdoor learning workshops
• Delivering nature-based activities to school groups
• Supporting the creation of ELWP’s Under 18s volunteering policy
• Supporting outreach efforts to promote ELWP’s existing learning programmes

The Learning Circle currently meets monthly on a Wednesday evening at 8pm for an hour on Google Meet and spends voluntary time outside of the meeting completing agreed tasks remotely

You should be an experienced teacher, educational consultant, forest school leader, training and development specialist, learning designer, facilitator or any other kind of role creating learning projects, programmes and experiences. Our roles are quite flexible. We hope that people bring radical imagination, peace with nature, and courageous inclusiveness to the role. 

Your support will help young people and learners improve their environmental knowledge of design and research as well as contributing to our community-owned park. This will in turn provide a sense of stewardship over the land once the park is created and student's ideas have been built into the park. Creating learning projects with educational institutions will also help our charity with the strategy to buy the land through showing the value of our environmental education programme before we create the park. 

You will have a significant impact on the creation of a new biodiverse community-owned park with free access natural swimming ponds. By volunteering in this role, you will help shape the future of East London Waterworks Park as a community-led environmental learning space. Rural Watch Africa Initiative (RUWAI) empowers rural communities to fight poverty, restore degraded land, and build climate resilience through sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, and eco-friendly livelihoods. We’re passionate about what we do, and love giving second-hand clothing a chance of going to a good home. Our shop teams are key to raising vital funds for our work and act as incredible advocates for the rights of children both in the UK and around the world.

Volunteering in the shop

Our Belmont Road Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

Skills and experiences we seek

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need any retail or shop experience as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and to follow our policies as well as be an excellent representative for Save the Children. 

We know that our shop teams are stronger when they are inclusive and representative of their communities. Everybody can make a real difference. People come to us for all sorts of reasons, from all backgrounds, and we will do what we can to find a role that works for you.

What happens next?

After you’ve filled in an application, we will invite you for an informal trial shift. It’s a great opportunity to visit the shop, meet some of our existing volunteers and have a go at some of the tasks that you would be supporting with as a shop volunteer. Hopefully allowing you to get a feel for the role and make sure it’s for you.
