About Breadwinners

Breadwinners is set up to tackle unemployment and poor well-being by providing young refugees and people seeking asylum with their first work experience in the UK, training and personal mentors so that they can start and progress in their careers. We achieve this goal through three consecutive programmes, using our award-winning bread stalls in markets across London and Brighton and wholesale for socially-minded cafes and restaurants

1. Risers programme: A two-month early intervention programme designed to provide structured work experience, training, and mentorship to newly arrived young people seeking asylum through our 18 stalls.

2. Breadwinners programme: The follow-up programme for refugees with the right to work, which involves working as a market stall manager for six months and earning the UK living wage.

3. Proofers programme: A progression programme that entails working remotely as part-time online sales representatives for six months, managing our wholesale delivery model.

Our programmes, delivered across London and Brighton, and over the last 7 years we have made a significant impact in supporting over 744+ programme participants, with an impressive 93% reporting notable improvements in their overall well-being, 76% of our Breadwinners programme progress into work, further education or volunteering, and all this while minimising our Carbon Footprint by 20.5% through the sale of organic goods. This year, we are planning to double our impact with young refugees, with recently secured funding, new markets, and focusing on our wholesale model.

You will be working directly with the Managing Director, Core team and Board of Trustees and volunteers to improve Finance Processes, set up and review Budgets, and lead board meetings structure and discussions, delivering the best strategy for the Breadwinners community. Your role 

Alongside the general responsibilities of a Trustee, you will:

• Support the Managing Director in the production of an annual budget and propose its adoption at the last meeting of the previous financial year.

• Support the Director to ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place.

• Support the Director to monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation at board meetings, making fellow committee members aware of their financial obligations and taking a lead in interpreting financial data to them

• Oversee the production of necessary financial reports/returns, accounts and audits together with auditors.

Our aim is to help young people overcome hardships and make the positive transition back into wider society and to help to reduce reoffending rates.

Scope of Volunteer Main Role and Duties (not exhaustive):

Mentoring Arm:

1. Work through a ‘Discharge List’ systematically, cross referencing with the Operations Manager, so as not to duplicate any work or contact with the young people.
2. Hand out and (where needed) help complete ‘Questionnaires’ given to young people from the ‘Discharge List’, in order to ascertain what type of job or education sector the young person would be interested in going into. Forms to be given to the Operations Manager afterwards.
3. Follow up with a one-to-one session – register the young person to the FCCT programme and completing relevant paperwork, which will include our ‘Client Profile Form’ and ‘Consent Form’.
4. Update a shared ‘Client Spreadsheet’ which will be used to capture data information, as to the young people that FCCT are engaging with.
5. If required, identify relevant community organisations for the young people to attend post release and contact said establishments, to understand their referral criteria and then make relevant referrals, where required.
6. Collect testimonials from the young people in relation to the support FCCT have offered them.
7. Mentoring of young people 
8. Make or facilitate family contacts for resettlement purposes, in relation to the young people.

Training and Support

We will provide all the necessary training. Training will be provided on an ongoing basis and volunteers will be given a full induction of the organisation and how the projects run.

Time Required

FCCT ask for a minimum of 8 hours a month. Due to the flexibility of the role, the hours can be distributed over different days between the core hours of 9am - 5pm, including Sundays. We are for a commitment of at least a year with the project, due to the flexibility of the role.

Are you passionate about supporting young refugees and asylum seekers as they begin their journey into the UK workforce? Become a Volunteer Mentor with Breadwinners!

What Does a Volunteer Mentor Do?

As a volunteer mentor, you'll be paired with a young person in one of our two core programmes:

• Risers Programme (2 months): For young asylum seekers aged 16-24 who are awaiting refugee status.
• Breadwinners Programme (6 months): For refugees with the right to work in the UK, helping them gain vital skills and experience.

Most mentors will work with our Risers, as this program is more fast-paced, but opportunities exist to mentor our Breadwinners too.

Your role? Help your mentee gain hands-on work experience at one of our weekend market stalls and lead weekly 1:1 mentoring sessions. These sessions are designed to develop employability skills, explore future goals, and foster social connections. Many of our mentors build lasting relationships with their mentees even after the program ends.

Time Commitment:

• Market Shifts: 2 hours per weekend (Saturday or Sunday).
• 1:1 Mentoring: 1 hour per week, in person or online, to support career development.
• Ongoing Support: Stay in touch via text or calls during the week to help with logistics and provide encouragement.

Training and Support

We will provide all the necessary training. Training will be provided on an ongoing basis and volunteers will be given a full induction of the organisation and how the projects run. Volunteer expenses will be paid.

Time Required

FCCT ask for a minimum of 8 hours a month. Due to the flexibility of the role, the hours can be distributed over different days between the core hours of 9am - 5pm, including Sundays.

The Role: Trustee (Volunteer)

We are assembling a diverse and dynamic Trustee Board to guide the set-up, strategy, and launch of REMIX. You’ll play a central role in creating an inclusive, inspiring, and sustainable organisation that puts youth potential front and centre.

As a REMIX Trustee, you will:

• Steer Our Vision: Collaborate on the charity’s strategic goals, values, and roadmap from launch to long-term impact.

• Ensure Good Governance: Help lay strong foundations in line with Charity Commission guidance, ensuring transparency, accountability, and integrity.

• Advise on Key Areas: Bring expertise in areas like youth services, finance, legal, education, community engagement, HR, fundraising, or lived experience.

• Champion our Cause: Be an ambassador for REMIX, advocating for youth empowerment and expanding our network through your connections and passion.

• Build Something That Matters: Co-create REMIX’s culture, ethos, and ambition—helping shape a lasting legacy for East London’s young people.

We especially welcome people with lived experience, those connected to our East London communities, and individuals passionate about building grassroots change with creativity and courage. We're also interested in people with fundraising experience, financial management/accounting experience, leadership experience, charity or education experience and much more.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

The PR is responsible for the preparation of a press kit and outreach communications to send to journalist and media companies to publish our news on their blogs, sites, socials etc.

Reporting to the Managing Director, you will create a pool of contacts on excel spreadsheet to use for press releases and media outreach on behalf of the organisation

Creating stories for several projects that are of clear benefit to the organisation including our films, music productions, acting for film workshops, artist development workshops for young people from different boroughs in West London. This role will work closely with project stakeholders, including young people organisations, funders and partners, probation officers, as well as collaborate with our Research and Performance and Collective Action departments to learn from our work and embed best practice.

This role will work closely with the Managing Director and project manager colleagues to lead our delivery portfolio through your story creations.

You will also promote our projects, recruit volunteers to support our promos and promote our programmes through the online platform such as YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

The PRO  will be responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating the success of online promotional programmes. They will work closely with a portfolio of partners to design meaningful online interventions for our beneficiaries, as well as leading on the recruitment of volunteers to promote programmes and the evaluation of programmes using the One Place vision of change.

KEY SKILLS

Understanding and experience of marketing and online promotion of projects such as films and music with experience of promoting effective projects on a regional scale preferred but not essential, engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and a passion for making a difference to the lives of young people and organisations purpose. We are looking for someone who is proactive, inclusive, inspiring, highly organised and uses their initiative to find creative solutions and manage multiple priorities.

At 23rd Poplar Scouts, we’ve got a growing bunch of Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and Explorers (ages 4 to 18) who are bursting with energy, questions, and potential.

And we’re looking for more grown-ups (yes, you!) to join our crew of volunteers.

Here's the deal - we don’t care if you can’t tie 12 knots or survive a week in the woods with just a spork or whether you're a parent, student, working professional, or retiree.
We do care if you:

• Enjoy seeing young people grow in confidence

• Like a laugh

• Are reliable

• Are up for trying something new (even if it involves glitter, tents, or biscuits)

You could help once a week, once a month, or just whenever you can. We’ll show you the ropes, give you some training, and promise not to make you wear shorts in winter.

This is about community, confidence, and connection – and giving young people a place to feel like they belong.
