What is a Branch Fundraiser?
As part of a local team, our fundraisers represent SSAFA at events, and in public. The role includes helping at fayres, street collections, concerts, quizzes, raffles, sporting events etc.
Why do we need you?
We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan.
There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.
SSAFA branches rely on regular charitable income to fund all the necessities behind our support for clients. This includes volunteer travel expenses, phone bills, publicity, and grants for clients in urgent need. A varied programme of fundraising also keeps the SSAFA profile high in the local community, so everyone knows who we are and how we can help.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role involves being out and about at public events and would suit someone looking to give the occasional day, half day or evening to support SSAFA; when and where would be flexible to suit you.
What would you be doing?
- Be part of a team with collection/buckets tins at events, supermarkets, shopping centres, etc.
- Acting as a marshal at a public event e.g., handing out water to runners, supervising parking etc.
- Being part of a team running a stall at an event, Armed Forces Day, fayre, county show etc.
- Helping with putting up posters, building gazebos, serving refreshments, packing/unpacking cars etc.
- Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA, engaging people of all backgrounds and interests
- Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA including observing our policies such as the Volunteering policy and data protection policy (these will be covered in your training and local induction.)
The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

What is a Branch Treasurer?
There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas. These are divided into small local areas that we call divisions. Each branch has a treasurer overseeing the divisions that, in turn each have a treasurer of their own. This is a key role involving financial planning and financial administration.

One of the key ways we help people is by tapping into various sources of funding on their behalf. Monitoring and reconciling this flow of funding into and out of SSAFA accounts is important to ensure clients receive timely support and we are able to account for all charitable funds in our care.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. This flexible role involves using our on-line financial management system and on-line bank accounts and so can be done when and where suits you best. You will need to attend a number of branch committee meetings each year.
What would you be doing?
· Maintaining and reconciling local bank accounts and recording transactions
· Supporting divisions to manage their local finances.
· Making and recording all authorised payments
· Preparing year end accounts and financial statements including arranging an independent review
· Working with the branch secretary, advise on a local fundraising programme to cover branch running costs.
· Identify and manage the return of any surplus monies from grants as appropriate.
· Providing reports to the branch committee and to SSAFA’s Central Office
· Maintaining accurate records using our on-line finance management system
· Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA remembering that anyone you meet could be a potential client, volunteer, or fundraiser.
· Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA including observing our policies such as the Volunteering policy and data protection policy (these will be covered in your training and local induction.)

As Vice-Chair of Trustees you will provide strategic direction for the charity, ensuring that we are meeting the demand for our services, and making certain that we help and support people in crisis in the local community.
Key tasks
Vice-Chairperson Responsibilities:
- work alongside the Chairperson to ensure the board functions effectively and carries out its duties
- ensure the board sets an overall direction for the food bank with clear objectives
- ensure that the business of meetings is dealt with, and decisions are recorded and implemented
- in consultation with the rest of the board, recruit board members with relevant expertise and experience when required
- as a deputy for the Chairperson, taking on the Chair’s role in their absence.
- to learn from the Chair of Trustees, with a view to ascending to the role of Chairperson at the conclusion of their term in office.
Ensure an effective relationship between staff, volunteers, and stakeholders:
- to plan, with the Chairperson and food bank manager, an annual schedule of any subcommittee/steering group meetings and other key events which board members should attend
- to work alongside the Food Bank Manager to ensure there is appropriate communication between the trustee board and staff, volunteers, and any other stakeholders.
- Other responsibilities, along with the board of trustees, include:
- to approve, support and guide the charity’s purpose, vision, strategy, goals and objectives
- to manage the charity’s resources responsibly, ensuring the charity’s assets are used only to carry out its purpose, ensure the charity does not become over-committed, and ensure that key risks are identified, monitored and controlled appropriately
- to ensure the effective and efficient administration of the charity, responding to changes in the local community as appropriate
- to ensure appropriate financial plans are in place, budgets are monitored, financial statements are reviewed, and progress is evaluated
- to help promote the organisation to key stakeholders and beneficiaries
- to ensure the charity has appropriate procedures to comply with current legislation and good practice, including employment, health and safety, equity, diversity and inclusion, safeguarding, and GDPR compliance/data protection
- to prepare for and regularly attend and participate in board and subcommittee meetings and any trustee away days.

Trustees play a vital role in ensuring Middlewich and District Foodbank meets its core purpose by overseeing the management and administration of the charity and ensuring that the foodbank has a clear strategy in line with our vision and goals.
What will you be doing?
As a trustee you will share collective responsibility for the governance of the food bank and all decisions made by the board, ensuring the organisation is well run, fulfils its mission, is compliant with charity law and that the charity is open and accountable. It is also the responsibility of the treasurer to work in partnership with the chairperson and other trustees to ensure the financial viability and development of the organisation.
Key tasks
Trustee (Fundraising & Grants Lead) responsibilities:
- to work alongside the Finance Committee, treasurer and the rest of the board to plan what level of funds are required to be generated to ensure the effective running of the charity
- to work alongside the trustee board to ensure that all grants are sought and written with the purpose of meeting the charity’s vision and objectives
- to lead on the organisation of fundraising opportunities to support the running of the charity, with a specific focus on engaging with business and corporate partners
- to lead on incorporating national Trussell fundraising campaigns/events into the food bank’s fundraising calendar
- to oversee, with operational management support, the writing of high-quality grant applications that are in line with the charity’s vision and objectives
- to regularly communicate to the rest of the trustee board via trustee meetings or any other communication, any relevant information and/or developments regarding fund raising or grant applications.
Other responsibilities, along with the board of trustees, include:
- to approve, support and guide the charity’s purpose, vision, strategy, goals and objectives.
- to manage the charity’s resources responsibly, including ensuring the charity’s assets are used only to carry out its purpose, avoid undue risk, and not over-commit the charity.
- to ensure that key risks are identified, monitored, and controlled appropriately.
- to ensure appropriate financial plans are in place, budgets are monitored, and progress is evaluated.
- to review and approve financial statements.
- to ensure the charity has appropriate procedures to comply with current legislation and good practice, including employment, health and safety, equity, diversity and inclusion, safeguarding and GDPR compliance/data protection.
- to prepare for and regularly attend and participate in board and subcommittee meetings and any trustee away days.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for people who want to help their local community and work towards the eradication of food poverty. Our ideal candidates would demonstrate:
- an understanding of, and commitment to, the work of the Middlewich & District Foodbank
- a knowledge of, and passion for, fundraising and grant application writing
- an ability to lead on any fundraising and grants matters in a supportive and confident manner
- experience of liaising with business and corporate partners and the development of fundraising relationships
- excellent communication and collaboration skills
- the ability to engage with others and be part of a team, as well as being organised and motivated to complete tasks independently
- willingness to actively participate in discussions concerning needs of the foodbank’s beneficiaries, staff, and the trustee board
- the ability to listen and engage with people from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences
- willingness to act in the best interest of the charity
- sound, independent judgement and ability to think creatively
- working effectively as a team member and demonstrating a willingness to learn and develop.
It is not necessary to have previous board experience as training and support will be provided. This role could support someone taking their first steps to develop wider board level and governance experience
