Robertson Bell is partnering with Shaw Trust to recruit a Tax Accountant on a 14-month fixed-term contract. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced tax professional seeking a highly autonomous role, taking ownership of the day-to-day tax affairs of a large and complex charitable group while benefiting from a fully remote working arrangement.

Working as the organisation’s key point of contact for tax matters, the Tax Accountant will take ownership of a broad range of business-as-usual tax activity, with a particular focus on VAT due to the scale and complexity of the organisation’s transactions and contracts. Reporting to the Head of Financial Reporting, you will operate with considerable autonomy, managing recurring tax obligations and providing practical advice across Finance and the wider organisation.

The key duties of the Tax Accountant are as follows:

• Take ownership of the Group’s day-to-day tax affairs, operating as a trusted and autonomous tax specialist across the organisation.
• Act as the go-to person for tax matters, providing practical advice to Finance and the wider business and identifying relevant changes in tax legislation.
• Prepare and submit quarterly Group VAT returns, including partial exemption calculations, within a high-volume and complex environment.
• Provide VAT guidance across the organisation, including assessing the implications of new contracts and transactions and supporting the business to minimise irrecoverable VAT.
• Prepare and submit corporate tax returns and associated tax accounting, including corporate Gift Aid and relevant loss relief.
• Support monthly and annual Gift Aid activity, including data analysis and reporting.
• Prepare and submit the PSA return and provide support to Payroll and HR on employee-related tax matters.
• Monitor the Group’s Senior Accounting Officer status and support associated statutory reporting, including the tax risk register and SAO certification.
• Liaise effectively with external stakeholders including HMRC, tax advisers and internal and external auditors.

The successful candidate will have:

• Significant experience working in an in-house tax role, ideally with at least five years’ experience managing a broad range of tax responsibilities.
• Previous experience operating as a sole or highly autonomous tax practitioner, with the confidence to manage BAU tax activity without regular senior tax support.
• Strong practical VAT experience, including VAT returns and partial exemption, alongside a good working knowledge of corporate tax.
• Experience dealing with Gift Aid and employment-related taxes, or sufficient broader tax knowledge to pick these areas up quickly.
• Experience working within a complex group structure or similarly large organisation.
• The ability to analyse and manipulate complex data, work through tax issues independently and communicate solutions clearly to non-tax specialists.
• A CCAB or relevant tax qualification would be advantageous, although candidates with substantial relevant experience will also be considered.
• Charity tax experience would be beneficial, as would previous exposure to AlphaVAT, Thomson Reuters OneSource or Agresso Business World.

This is a 14-month fixed-term contract, expected to commence in mid-November 2026. The role is fully remote, with part-time options available, and offers a full-time equivalent salary of £50,000–£55,000 per annum.
