Perhaps you’ve spotted there are no blue badge spaces at your local supermarket? Or maybe your neighbourhood has no kerbs easy for wheelchairs to use? In this volunteer role, you’ll help drive change for people with MS in your community and develop your networking and influencing skills along the way.

As a campaigner you’ll bring your own ideas, local knowledge and personal experience to your campaigns. You’ll make decisions about your own campaign activities and collaborate with other campaigners in your area.

As our Fundraising Volunteer you’ll support your Fundraising Group Coordinator to organise local fundraising activities and events throughout the year. You could be researching and talking to prospective supporters to develop links with local organisations, planning and organising group fundraising events, coordinating and supporting others involved in fundraising.

In this role you’ll be able to develop your organisation, communication and team working skills. Most importantly you’ll inspire your local community to raise funds that help make sure no one has to face MS alone.

Our mission is to provide engaging youth work activities, offer positive mentorship, and create safe spaces where young people can thrive, develop new skills, discover themselves and reach their full potential.

We're currently in the crucial setup phase, and we need your help to connect with our audience and build a vibrant online presence and are therefore looking for a dedicated Volunteer for Communications & Social Media to help us spread our reach, attract and recruit young people to our programmes, and encourage vital support through donations and volunteering. What will you do?

In this pivotal role, you'll help us tell the Urban Youth story and engage our community online.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Content Creation: Developing engaging social media posts, stories, and visuals (graphics, short videos) for platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and X (Twitter).

• Audience Engagement: Helping to manage our social media channels, responding to comments, and fostering a positive online community.

• Campaign Support: Assisting with the creation and execution of digital campaigns to recruit young people for our programmes, encourage volunteering, and drive donations.

• Website & Newsletter Support: Contributing to basic website updates or helping to draft content for initial newsletters and email communications.

• Strategy Input: Providing ideas and insights into our overall communications and social media strategy to maximise our reach and impact.

Who are we looking for?

We need someone who is not only passionate about empowering young people but also brings practical skills and creativity in digital communications.

You should be:

• Social Media Savvy: Experienced with various social media platforms and understand what makes content engaging.

• Creative Thinker: Able to generate fresh ideas for content and campaigns.

• Strong Communicator: Excellent written communication skills; able to craft clear, concise, and compelling messages.

• Detail-Oriented: Able to maintain brand consistency and accuracy in all communications.

• Proactive & Reliable: Someone who can take initiative and manage tasks independently.

• Committed: Willing to dedicate a few hours a week (flexible, can often be done remotely) to help us build Urban Youth from the ground up. Experience with graphic design tools (like Canva) or video editing is a bonus!

This is a voluntary, unremunerated role, but it offers invaluable experience in charity communications, digital marketing, and the immense satisfaction of directly enabling a new organisation to make a profound difference in countless young lives.

The difference you will make to cats and people

Our social media volunteers use their passion and knowledge of social media to promote the activities of local volunteer teams though various channels. They directly help cats by raising awareness of Cats Protection. Our network of committed local vegans across the country is growing! The Vegan Society organises various outreach activities to influence change in every level of society. There are a range of activities going on all the time, from general educational stalls at events to meeting with local policy influencers.

What does the Advocate role involve?

Being an Advocate for veganism with The Vegan Society will mean communicating with people in your local community. You'll share the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. You will form part of a local group, headed up by a local Organiser. The Organiser will feed back your collective efforts to staff. You will also be invited to our private Facebook group, for vegan socialising and ideas sharing.

You’ll stay in touch with the Organiser and bring your passion to tasks. Activities can range from staffing a stall to giving a talk at an employee event. It could also mean writing to a local newspaper or lobbying an MP.

Messaging can differ every month. Part of our mission statement is to ensure people can remain vegan, so you might focus on getting more vegan options available in local businesses. Or within our Live Vegan for Less campaign, you may share cheap vegan recipes to help people with the cost of living.

When acting as an Advocate, you will use The Vegan Society’s branding and messaging guidelines. Your local Organiser will guide you in doing this, as they hold physical resources and handbooks. You can report any issues and feedback you have to your Organiser. You can also contact staff if your Organiser isn't available or you have any problems.

What training and support is available?

You will be provided with a big welcome and full induction from your local Organiser. They will introduce you to the group and any actions that are ongoing. Any training and development will be provided via your Organiser, and you can also ask for specific training on any areas that you need some development in.

What skills would be useful in doing this role?

• The ability to stay motivated in order to achieve the best possible outcomes
• Good email etiquette, responding in a timely manner
• Committed to veganism and the mission of The Vegan Society
• Ability to stay calm if confronted with differing opinions or challenges
• A good communicator, with the ability to be persuasive
• Confident in communicating with people from a range of backgrounds
• Experience of campaigning
• Any experience in talking with members of the public through customer/public service would be helpful

How much time do I need to invest?

For Advocates, we ask for people to engage in a minimum of four to six actions per year. An example of an action could be writing to an MP or holding a stall. But the more you can do, the better! On occasion, there may also be online meetings to plan for actions or provide training.

About The Role

At Washington you will be involved first hand are in assisting the collection team in  maintaining and developing exhibits within the site at Washington to enhance the visitor experience.

This involves helping the Collection team to care for our large collection of rare and endangered species of waterfowl from around the world as well as wetland mammals.

Conducting public talks with our otters and Flamingos is also an important part of the role. Helping the team to inspire our visitors by the work we do and also showing them how they can get involved.

Why volunteer with us? We have one of the largest waterfowl collections in the North East, with over 40 species, 15 of which are of Conservation Concern, including the current flock of 56 breeding Chilean Flamingos and a pair of Asian Short-clawed Otters. Previous volunteers have gone on to work in animal conservation work around the world. 

We are currently looking for volunteers that can help us on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays or Sundays. We ask that you can commit a minimum of 6 months to get the most from your role. You must be over 18 to apply for this role.

Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team. You'll get a warm welcome, including information on training, equipment and anything else you need.
